== Plot == <br />
In the early 1970s, Venu is a high schooler who devotes all of his time to helping out in traveling plays as they stop in his hometown. One night, the producer of a play asks him to bring an instrumentalist, Murali, from the house of the local landlord. Drunk, Murali reluctantly agrees to play for the evening. Venu is thoroughly impressed with the man's spontaneous musicality and they quickly become friends. As time passes, Venu goes to college; Murali shows up there one day, trying to meet the principal to borrow a new book that has reached the college library. Venu offers to help and discovers that the book has already been lent to a first-year student named Annie. Murali, on meeting Annie, instantly falls in love with her. They meet that night to exchange the book and continue seeing each other. Murali asks her out, but is met with shock and rejection. She tells him to leave, also revealing that she is sexually involved with her brother-in-law due to his compulsion.<br />
<br />
Murali is shattered by the news and disappears for a while. One day, he writes to Venu that he is leaving for Madras with the intention of making it in cinema; Venu joins him as well. They rent out a room in Kodambakkam where Murali lands a job as a violinist under music director Indhra Dhanush. After playing the violin for a B-movie, Murali meets the producer of the film, Keshavadev. He tells him that his film will flop massively. Embarrassed, he returns to meet him after it rightly fails. Murali introduces him to Venu, who has the script for a prospective film. He is impressed and agrees to produce it. Venu insists that Murali produce the music for it, but he refuses, citing his inexperience. Murali secretly passes on some of his music to Indhra Dhanush, who goes on to compose music for the film. The film, upon release, becomes a huge success, with the song that Murali actually composed becoming a sensation. He is driven mad by the fact that he did not produce the music himself. He meets Indhra Dhanush, asking in vain that he at least tell Venu that it was his music. Venu eventually discovers the original cassette with the words "Murali" on it, containing his film's music. He tries to meet Murali, discovering that he has left Madras.<br />
<br />
Over the years, Venu directs many more films and falls out of the cinema industry. He meets Murali again who says that he should return to the film industry. He hesitatingly agrees, and they discover the young director Pradeep. Venu and Pradeep start looking for the crew to work on one of Venu's old scripts, Jeevithagadhakale. They finalise on a cast of mostly new artists except for the eccentric actor, Nithin Molly. At the end of filming, their producer, Jayan, who is Keshavdev's son, falls seriously ill and is unable to continue bankrolling the film. Murali, disappointed, disappears again. They are miraculously saved by paparazzi who film Nithin Molly in an inebriated state, making him popular and creating hype for the film. Jeevithagadhakale releases theatrically to outstanding reactions and reviews.<br />
<br />
Venu hires a taxi to a location in Tamil Nadu where they meet Senthil, an old friend from their lodge in Madras. He directs them to Trichy, where Murali is living in a Carnatic music sabha. Venu tells him that their first movie as a duo has released, to his delight. They go to a theatre in Coimbatore to see how the audience reacts to their film.<br />

=== Development ===<br />
On 13 July 2023, Vineeth Sreenivasan announced his collaboration once again with producer Visakh Subramaniam of Merryland Cinemas, following the success of Hridayam (2022), for their second project together, titled Varshangalkku Shesham. The film also brings back Pranav Mohanlal and Kalyani Priyadarshan from their previous film. Vineeth described that the film will revolve around a bunch of friends.<br />
<br />
In an interview, talking about his influences, Vineeth recalled how he listened to his father Sreenivasan's stories about his early life in Madras and also the experiences of his contemporaries in the film industry. During his school days, Vineeth avidly read popular Malayalam film magazines, such as Nana, Vellinakshatram, and Chithrabhumi, which featured articles and interviews with those working in cinema. These stories, along with the imagined picture of Madras they presented, served as inspirations for Varshangalkku Shesham. He also recalled how, during stage shows, actors Mukesh and Innocent would entertain the team with anecdotes from their lives in Madras and their experiences in the cinema world. Vineeth himself being a resident of Chennai (formerly Madras), describes the city as "a place that had always fascinated" him. Varshangalkku Shesham features Madras in the 1970s and 1980s, spanning 50 years from early 1970s, showcasing the evolution of the film industry during this period; the film "attempts to showcase that arc of time, the mood and the style of working".<br />

Vineeth had Pranav, Dhyan, and Nivin in mind during the scripting phase itself. According to Vineeth, the film will not work without the three. About Kalyani's casting, he said: "Everyone suggested Kalyani after listening to the story". Vineeth based Pranav's character after actor Murali, whom he observed during the filming of Champakulam Thachan (1992). He recalls seeing Murali walking towards their hotel from a distance, dressed in a jubba and mundu, with a sling bag on his shoulder, while singing a poem. Vineeth described the characterisation as "a man flowing in the wind". He also named the character after the actor. The film marks the reunion of Pranav and Kalyani with Vineeth after Hridayam. Vineeth collaborates with Nivin after an eight-year hiatus. <br />
Karnavedha (कर्णवेध, Karṇavedha) or Karnavedham is one of the sixteen major sanskaras (sacraments) known as "Shodasha Sanskaras" of Sanatana Dharma. It is an ear piercing ceremony that is typically performed between the first and fifth year of life. This can also be performed during later years. <br />
<br />
Brahmins, especially those studying the vedas, usually undergo karnavedha and the other samskaras during the course of their lifetime. The samskaras are mentioned in the Brahmana portion of the vedas. Some scholars advise that the performance of karnavedha should be considered just as important as upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony - another major samskara ) and the other sacraments as each holds its own symbolic spiritual value. <br />
<br />
While equally recommended for males and females, in modern times, karnavedha has become an uncommon practice amongst males. <br />
<br />
Karnavedha is considered a vedic rite of passage with symbolic spiritual significance. Some believe that it is intended to open the inner ears for receiving sacred sounds. Hearing of sacred sounds with concentration is considered meritorious in that it cleanses the mind and nurtures the spirit. <br />
<br />
During certain medieval periods, "karnavedha" became associated with religious attire and its performance became obligatory to the extent that its non-performance became regarded as sinful among some communities. According to a medieval writer, "All the accumulated merits of listening to sacred sounds disappear at the sight of a "Brahmana" through whose ear lobes do not pass the rays of the sun. No gift should be given to him at Sraddha ceremonies. If one does so, he/she becomes equivalent to an `asura` or demon."<br />

==Plot==<br />
Abhiram (Nagarjuna Akkineni) is a manager in an ad agency, owned by his paternal uncle Prasad (Tanikella Bharani). He despises women and expresses his hatred every minute of every day. But his office is populated by women as it is an ad agency and he has to live with it. Prasad appoints Harika (Sonali Bendre) as the new assistant manager and Abhiram hates to have another female employee in his office. He never leaves an opportunity to belittle her and gradually Harika gets fed up and goes to Chairman Prasad to submit her resignation. Prasad asks her to think about it twice and tells her about Abhiram's past and why he deeply hates women.<br />
<br />
Abhi lost his parents when he was too young and his grandfather brings him up. He was the only heir to their family business and enjoys life in his own way. He meets and falls in love with Maheswari (Anshu), who is the niece of an employee (Chandra Mohan) in Abhi's grandfather's company. Alarmed that he will just play with her and leave her, Maheshwari's uncle takes her away to his hometown and arranges her engagement with another man. Abhi goes there and tries to bring Maheswari with him assuring her uncle that he is going to marry her. But on the way to his grandfather's home, they meet with a serious accident. When Abhi returns to his consciousness, his grandfather tells him that Maheswari married another person and shows him the invitation card. Abhi feels cheated and starts to hate all the women and thinks that they all are superficial and treacherous.<br />
<br />
After listening this, Harika feels sympathy towards Abhi's pain and his child like mind. She decides to stay with the company and Prasad promotes her as manager and demotes Abhi as assistant manager for some time. Though infuriated, Abhi has no choice but stay and goes with her to Paris on a business trip. There they become close and Harika helps him with his phobia of water. Abhi starts to fall for Harika but is disappointed and distances himself from her when she reveals that she is engaged to be married. <br />
<br />
After they come back to India, Abhi behaves in a childish manner to get over his disappointment. Harika reciprocates his feelings but is confused about getting married as Abhi won't express his feelings. Meanwhile, Abhi's aunt reveals that Maheswari actually died in the accident they were in and they hid that information fearing that Abhi might not come out of the shock of that news. Abhi realizes it was foolish of him to hate women but is too shocked to express his feelings to Harika. At last Harika dares and tells him that this marriage was her parents choice not hers, indirectly indicating that she was ready to come to him if he asks. Prasad comes to know that Abhi and Harika have feelings for each other and encourages Abhi to go and get her. Finally he asks her to marry him and she breaks her previous engagement and marries him.<br />

==Reception==<br />
<br />
The movie received highly positive critical feedback. Particularly, Akkineni Nagarjuna, Trivikram Srinivas and Devi Sri Prasad received rave reviews for their respective works in this film. Popular reviewing website Idlebrain rated 4.5 out of 5 stating "When director and hero have latest hits behind their back, the comparison is inevitable. This film is definitely better than Santosham (Nagarjuna's earlier film). Manmadhudu is as good as Nuvvu Naaku Nachav (Vijaya Bhaskar's earlier film). First half of the film is extremely entertaining (total comedy + flashback romance). And second half (comedy + story) is even better than first half. 95% of the scenes in the film are comedy dialogues. There are few sentiment scenes. But these very few sentiment scenes are bound to leave impact on you. Nagarjuna dominated the show and won accolades from audiences. It's a must recommended hilarious film for all Telugu film lovers." Another popular reviewing website Sify gave an extremely positive review and wrote "Though the story is wafer thin, the director has been able to package the film well with an innovative presentation. Nagarjuna and Sonali are excellent and have played their roles with conviction. The music of Devi Sri Prasad is hummable. The film is out to wallop some fun ‘n’ frolic.", giving a verdict that it is a "Rip-Roaring Entertainer". Another reviewing website fullhyd.com gave a positive review stating "Nagarjuna lends significantly to the character of Abhiram in one of his slickest cinematic performances ever. He perfectly captures the liveliness, complexity and frustration of Abhiram. Unquestionably, Manmathudu proves to be an enthralling vehicle for his crowd-pleasing comeback. Sonali gives a commendable performance as a young and struggling art director who is in love with Abhiram. Devi Sri Prasad's romantic and sometimes ominous musical score nicely complements the images on screen. The dialogues, penned by Trivikram, are chronically mind-boggling. Manmathudu gratifies on many levels. The direction maintains pace and intrigue, the performances are spot on, and the locations are simply sumptuous, be it Smokey Alps or a clean Hyderabad road. All things considered, if you can stomach the thirty minutes of echoing flashback, Manmathudu makes for one intense and rousing entertainment, and if you're on its quirky wavelength, it might just strike you as one of the funniest movies you've ever seen!"<ref>Manmadhudu review: Manmadhudu (Telugu) Movie Review – fullhyd.com.
