The Sims 2: Open for Business is the third expansion pack for The Sims 2, which will be released on March 3 2006 and will allow Sims to rent or own community lots and run their own businesses.

Description
According to the preview included with The Sims 2: Nightlife, "The Sims 2 Open for Business Expansion Pack is coming your way early 2006. Create shops, boutiques, entertainment hot spots, home businesses, and more. Hire friendly workers and fire slackers as you strive to keep up with demand. Get ready to take your Sims from rags to riches."

New Additions
Open for Business will add a lot to each of the different modes of the Sims gameplay, as well as a new music genre.

Running Businesses
The entire new concept of running businesses is the game's main new feature, and a new direction for The Sims, as it now includes elements of a tycoon game.

New features related to the business concept/mode are:
*Sims can make money three different ways: sell Sims items (either crafted or purchased from the buy catalog), charge them to use an item (eg a salon chair) or charge them admission to the lot by the hour (using a ticket machine).
*When selling items, they can purchase and sell on any item from the Buy Mode catalog, for example toilets and teddy bears.
*Though Sim's businesses will be able to sell whatever they want, possibilities include a clothing boutique, a beauty salon, a high-end electronics shop, a bakery, a flower shop, and a deli.
*Sims can run a business from home, buy a vacant community lot and build on it, or take over a community lot that was previously "owned" by NPCs-- for example, one could buy one of the downtown night clubs or restaurants from Nightlife (if the player has Nightlife, of course).
*Restaurant menus will be customizable, therefore Sims can run any type of restaurant from retro burger joint to gourmet restaurant.
*You will be able to change the layout of the store to best attract browsers, deliver friendly service to loyal customers, and charm high-maintenance shoppers.
*Sims can hire the staff as the business grows, though there will be "slacker" employees. Employees wages can also be set, as well as their position in the store.
*All Sims in the same family/household as the business owner will become employees.
*Sims will be able to earn talent badges. They will unlock them by practising the relevant skills (for example, to get Sales badges a sim must attempt sales (whether they sell or not does not matter), and for crafting badges they must work on the crafting objects (robot-making station, flower kiosk, etc). They will unlock new items to create and socials to use on customers (for example the "Dazzle" social).
*As your business rank increases (through increasing customer loyalty), your sims will be able to unlock perks, which can give them an extra boost in cash, grant them new socials to help increase business productivity, reduce the cost of wholesale purchase, and boost their social standing and capabilities. They will not be able to pass these perks to others on death, but can mentor their family members to give them the skill-based perks.
*Your business will be able to have a mascot. Confirmed mascots include knights, ninjas, and gorillas.
*Secret shoppers will be included. If they have a good time at your store, you get a good review. The reverse will happen if they have a bad time. Your store will get a "Best of The Best" award if you impress them.
*Teens will be able to work, manage, and own stores.
*You determine when your Sim's business is opened or closed. There is an open/closed sign that you can use, or you can simply decide that whenever you visit your community lot business, it's open.
*There is a social option that can transfer the business between family members. When death occurs, the business is autotransferred to an heir.

Around the House
*Your sims will be able to craft new items, including toys, flower arrangements or robots, that can even help with household tasks. These items can be sold, and your Sim's abilty to build these items increases over time.
*There will be over 125 new items, including display cases, a beauty salon chair, a toy workbench, a floral station, cash registers, mission furniture, pet bricks, and water wigglers. There are a lot of new items for children and toddlers, many of which can be crafted.
*New foods include pies and cheesecake.
*Servo, a popular robot from Livin' Large will return (as a Gold badge craftable), this time a part of your family, with special motives, different from those of its human counterparts, wants and fears. Servo, when "initialized" can be made as a female or male, and is able to perform all romantic interactions, except "Try for baby". An alternative for Servo would be to adopt.
*In addition, three other robots-- Sentrybot, Hydrobot and Cleanbot-- have been added to the game.

Architecture
*Elevators are a new addition. They will need to be repaired if broken, or Sims will plumet to their deaths. Sims can also have sex ("Woohoo") in elevators-- though doing so dramatically increases their chances of causing a fatal mishap.
*Domed, conical and octagonal roofs in different sizes will be available.
*Split level floors, similar to the foundations currently available but not treated as a different floor, are in the expansion pack.
*Awnings, which are constructed like decks and foundations, are also now available.
*New windows, doors, floors and wall coverings will be available.

Music
A new musical genre titled new wave will be available, along with its own speaker. For the first time major bands from the 80s will each contribute one of their major hits re-recorded in Simlish, as well as a new, less well-known band, "The Epoxies". Confirmed artists and their songs are:

*Kajagoogoo with "Too Shy"
*Howard Jones with "Things Can Only Get Better"
*Depeche Mode with "Suffer Well"
*The Epoxies

Changes to the Main Game
*A new neighborhood type, Shopping District, will be available. A pre-made shopping district, "Bluewater Village" is confirmed. Famlies in the town include a toymaking family that's ready to buy a business, a family with a furniture store, a woman that owns a flower shop, a family bakery, and a rich tycoon that owns a nightclub.
*Doors are now lockable (only yourself, the family, or only the family and personel).
*Yard sales are possible.
*Kids can also run a small business, their own lemonade stand.
*A Sim can own multiple businesses and make money from a business without being there if they hire a manager to run it when the owner sim is not present.
*No aspirations have been added but wants and fears concerning the new content available in OFB have been added.
*Sims can now die on community lots for the first time, but only on owned community lots.

Progress
The game was unofficially announced September 13, 2005 in an insert in the previous expansion "The Sims 2: Nightlife" as "Open for Business". This name had been tentative until its official announcement exactly two months later when "Open for Business" was confirmed as the title.

According to a recent Chat about OfB, Maxis is currently "Tuning, bug fixing" and "polishing" the game, so we can assume it is very close to completion. We also, from the chat, learned the release date, March 3, 2006.

The expansion pack went gold on February 15, and was shipped to retailers on the 28th of February with an official consumer release date of March 2.
However, some territories have already received the game, and some sites give the release date of February 28th 2006. EB Games will release the expansion pack March 1st at their stores.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a game in the late stages of development by Bethesda Softworks LLC.

Overview
Oblivion continues the long tradition of The Elder Scrolls game series. It is currently confirmed for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360.

There will also be a "Collector's Edition" for both platforms which will contain a 112-page Pocket Guide to the Empire, a Bonus DVD (including concept art, renders, and a 45-minute (approx) documentary on the making of Oblivion), and a Septim coin replica (the currency of Tamriel, also known as a drake).

The game, featuring the voices of Patrick Stewart, Lynda Carter, Sean Bean, and Terence Stamp, has been in development since 2002 and is claimed as "another leap forward in role-playing with its combination of freeform gameplay and cutting-edge computer graphics."

Oblivion will feature a custom version of the Gamebryo game engine, a more involved combat interface utilizing the Havok physics engine, state-of-the-art graphics (utilizing True HDR) with some of the lushest forests ever (created with SpeedTree Technology), a more robust magical system, and a more interactive stealth system (similar to Thief: Deadly Shadows), along with many additional features not seen previously in the series.

The game will take place primarily in the Imperial province of Cyrodiil, including the Imperial City, but travel to the realm of Oblivion will be possible. Oblivion, the Elder Scrolls version of Hell, is the home of the Daedra (see below).

The death of the Emperor Uriel Septim VII and the resulting invasion of Daedra start the opening act and thrust the player into "saving the world" right from the start. However, as with any Elder Scrolls game, the main quest is optional and the player is free to explore the world at his or her leisure.

The Windows PC edition of the game will also include a new version of The Elder Scrolls: Construction Set (TES:CS). The CS allows for virtually unlimited expansion of the game and includes all of the basic world building tools used by the designers. This feature alone, when included with Morrowind and taken advantage of by a large modding community, gave it many years of additional replay value.

The Plane of Oblivion
While the short answer has always been "Oblivion is a version of Hell," the lore surrounding the realm is actually much more in-depth.

Oblivion is emptiness, the void, the vast infinite space surrounding the mortal plane of existence in the world of The Elder Scrolls. When a mortal looks up, he cannot comprehend infinity; what he sees is the darkness of space. This vast emptiness is Oblivion. The stars in the sky are the mortals' view of the infinite spheres of the Aedra and Daedra floating in the void.

The spheres (or pockets) that make up Oblivion are each ruled by a different Daedric Prince, with each sphere inheriting the attributes of the ruling Prince’s personality. The 16 Princes are: Azura, Boethiah, Clavicus Vile, Hoermius, Jyggalag, Malacath, Mehrunes Dagon, Mephala, Mora, Molag Bal, Namira, Nocturnal, Peryite, Sanguine, Sheogorath, and Vaernima.

Even to name these beings as good or evil is a misconception. Daedra do not act based upon right or wrong actions, ethics are moot to those whose existence is forever. They simply act as they will. Mortals label Daedra as good or evil depending on their view of this behavior.

Additionally, Daedra have difficulty understanding how mortals do not fall into despair, what with a mortal's knowledge of their own inevitable death. These inherent misunderstandings on the parts of both Daedra and Mortals towards each other create much of the dichotomy important in understanding the relationship between the two groups, and the struggles which rise up through them.

It should also be noted that within TES lore, mortals do not die and go to Oblivion. Souls are reborn back into their own realm. In much the same fashion, a Daedra will not die, but is banished back to its own sphere in Oblivion - the difference being a Daedra's consciousness and form is retained.

The gates connecting the mortal realm to the infinity of Oblivion have been protected in times past, prevented from opening so long as the emperor's bloodline controls the amulet which binds the pact between gods and men.

With the gates of Oblivion open, the most aggressive of Daedra will invade the mortal realms. So while there are many realms in the vastness of Oblivion, the only part that will be available in TES IV is the most "hellish" of all; that is, the most reminiscent of hell and its contents as some real-world religions conceive of it.

Game Technology
Radiant A.I.
Oblivion boasts a new artificial intelligence system, fully developed in house by Bethesda, codenamed 'Radiant AI'. It is a major source of excitement for many of the fans of the series as it aims to counter what was believed to be one of the major flaws of the previous installment (The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind): the lack of 'life' of the NPCs in the game. Radiant AI gives every NPC a set of 'needs' (such as hunger) that they will need to fulfill, thus creating a more lifelike world.

Radiant AI works by giving NPCs a list of goals. Nothing else is scripted. They must decide how to achieve these goals by themselves based on their individual statistics. A hungry NPC might compare his current gold against his moral values to decide whether he will walk to a store and purchase food, or just steal it; a skilled archer can choose to hunt his own deer.

This has required massive testing, but has even greater long-term flexibility for future NPC AI.

The following are humorous examples of unexpected behavior discovered during early testing:

Example 1: One character was given a rake and the goal "rake leaves"; another was given a broom and the goal "sweep paths," and this worked smoothly. Then they swapped the items, so that the raker was given a broom and the sweeper was given the rake. In the end, one of them killed the other so he could get the proper item.

Example 2: Another test had an on-duty NPC guard become hungry. The guard went into the forest to hunt for food. The other guards also left to arrest the truant guard, leaving the town unprotected. The villager NPCs then looted all of the shops, due to the lack of law enforcement.

Example 3: In another test a minotaur was given a task of protecting a unicorn (there is only one unicorn in the game). However, the minotaur repeatedly tried to kill the unicorn because he was set to be an aggressive creature.

Example 4: In one Dark Brotherhood quest, the player can meet up with a shady merchant who sells skooma. During testing, the NPC would be dead when the player got to him. The reason was that NPCs from the local skooma den were trying to get their fix, didn't have any skooma, and were killing the merchant to get it.

Example 5: While testing to confirm that the physics models for a magical item known as the "Skull of Corruption," which creates an evil copy of the character/monster it is used on, were working properly, a tester dropped the item on the ground. An NPC immediately picked it up and used it on the player character, creating a copy of him that proceeded to kill every NPC in sight.

Bethesda has been hard at work to fix these issues, balancing an NPC's needs against his penchant for destruction so that the game world still functions in a usable fashion.
Gamebryo Engine
The Gamebryo 3D graphics engine as described by Emergent Game Technologies:

The Gamebryo engine is both powerful and flexible enough to suit the needs of any type of game, demonstrated by the range of major games that use it: Sid Meier's Pirates!, Civilization IV, Dark Age of Camelot, and Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, to name a few. Gamebryo runs on every major platform, is already in use for Xbox 360, and will be optimized for use in PlayStation 3. It boasts outstanding, reliable performance, and includes the rendering, animation, and special effects features needed to create any game.

The Gamebryo run-time engine is a C++ API that features a hierarchical scene graph structure. Multiple culling and sorting techniques are available to reduce CPU usage by drawing only visible objects. The engine's flexibility allows simultaneous use of different sorting techniques in different parts of the scene graph.

Release Date
The developers at Bethesda's game studios currently list the only official release date as "Early 2006." Any changes to the release date will be announced here.

Common rumors (some of which have been printed in recent articles) state that the game will be released in March 2006, but when asked directly Bethesda has refused to acknowledge any official word beyond "Early 2006".

Factions
There are many factions and guilds in Oblivion, several of which can be joined.

The guilds function effectively as trade unions, where each seeks to control a particular type of job or skill set. When a player joins a guild, it will give them assignments (quests) that allow the player to earn rewards and/or promotion within the guild. The guilds also provide members with training, accommodation, advice and possibly allies. If a player gains enough influence within a guild they can rise to the top and become guild master, which in some cases gives them the authority to promote and demote members.

Known Factions that can be joined:
* Fighters' Guild (Traditional warriors and mercenaries)
* Thieves' Guild (Outlaws, brigands and rogues of all kinds)
* Mages' Guild (Training in magic, alchemy and access to creating enchanted equipment)
* The Dark Brotherhood (Assassins)
* The Blades (required for main quest completion)
* The Arena (Gladiatorial combat)

There are also several political factions in each major city vying for power against the Elder Council, which has been left governing Tamriel in the wake of the emperor's death. Many of these additional factions will have quests available, or be part of the main storyline, though to what extent the player can interact with them, or join them is unknown. The Mythic Dawn (Daedra worshipers), will most likely appear as an enemy faction. The Nine Divines and The Imperial Legion, while playing heavily into past elder scrolls games, will most likely be present but not joinable.

There is also an Arena which you may join as a combatant. Though it's not called the "gladiator's guild," in practice that's what it is. So when you "join the Arena," you are joining an elite group of warriors who fight in matches in the Arena. Winning matches in the Arena can earn you gold or new equipment. You work your way up a circuit (with ranks), all the way to the top. Your arena faction standing is your rank within the competitions.

Is the Arena a "guild"? Yes and no. "Yes" in the sense that you're joining an organization, and completing Arena matches just as you would quests. "No" in the sense that it's not one of the standard guild structures. When the guilds give you quests, you're potentially sent out anywhere in Cyrodiil; when the Arena gives you a match, you fight that match in the Arena. So the Arena is like the guilds in some ways, very much unlike them in others.

Betting on fights does NOT require you to join the Arena. Anyone can do that, without ever stepping into the Arena as a combatant to change faction rankings.

Playable Races
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion will have 10 playable races.

Four of the races are classical human archetypes:
*Breton (Descendants of humans and elves, predisposed toward healing and other magical arts)
*Imperial (The reigning race of Tamriel; similar to classic Romans)
*Nord (Fair-haired survivors)
*Redguard (Dark-Skinned, Skilled fighters)

Three types of Aldmeri (Elves):
*Altmer (High Elf)
*Bosmer (Wood Elf)
*Dunmer (Dark Elf)

And three beast races:
*Khajiit (A Feline biped race)
*Orsimer (Orcs, were once elves but Boethiah, a Daedric Prince, ate their leader Trinimac and turned him into Macalath.)
*Argonian (A reptilian humanoid race)

*The spears skill and weapons have been removed.
*Crossbows and throwing weapons have been removed.
*Bows have been improved in many aspects, including the use of physics on arrow flight.
*Were-wolves/creatures have not returned (though even for Morrowind, these were included later in an expansion).
*Magicka (mana) now regenerates over time.
*Stamina does not drain from running, but plays a more vital role in combat tactics.
*The skills list has been condensed into 21 skills.
*Medium armor as a skill, has been removed; the actual armors which were previously considered medium-class have been moved to the heavy or light armor skills.
*The Unarmored skill has been removed since you can now dodge with the Acrobatics skill.

Morrowind vs Oblivion vs Daggerfall size comparison
It has been confirmed by producer Todd Howard that the world will be larger than the previous installment in the series: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

For comparison, the total above-ground area of Morrowind's game world was roughly 10 square miles, but the actual landmass was only around 6 square miles and then surrounded by water; not including either of the expansions.

With Oblivion, the above-ground areas are approximately 16 square miles, considerably less water coverage; plus more than 200 underground dungeon areas and the realm of Oblivion.

"The realm of Oblivion" in lore is described as infinite; in game terms, you'll be exploring large randomly generated sections of extra-dimensional terrain every time you enter a portal and leave the normal world behind you. This is similar to the random dungeon generation of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

There have been no official size estimates for the playable sections of "the realm of Oblivion".

Neither Morrowind nor Oblivion has come close to the massive world as it existed in Daggerfall, estimated as being roughly twice the size of Great Britain, with over 15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons. Instead Oblivion aims to bring more life and detail to the world, and not just massive size.
Age of Mythology: The Titans is a real-time strategy computer game expansion pack of Age of Mythology. It was developed by Ensemble Studios and released in September 2003.

The expansion adds a fourth civilization to the game, the Atlanteans, and 3 new gods, plus many new units, buildings and god-powers. It also included many new features, such as auto-queueing (allows training of units indefinitely as long as there are sufficient resources), and the ability to summon a Titan, a powerful, godlike being which forms the game's focal point.

Atlanteans
The newly added civilization of Atlanteans is much different from the others, because of the focus on mythological and magical powers, including:
* Lack of specific hero units
* Ability to have an arbritary number of heros by converting any human unit to a hero (depending on the resources available)
* Not needing special drop-off points, and having each citizen accompanied by a pack mule
* The scout units, known as Oracles, which are effective only while standing still
* Ability to build town centers at the early ages of the game
* Ability (if Kronos is chosen as Major god) to time-shift buildings, i.e. move buildings from one place to another
* Ability (if Oranos is chosen as Major god) to build sky passages, which let instant tansportation of people to various places of the map
* Gaia's magical powers of growing lush from buildings, which prevents enemies from building anything on the lush.
* Ability to use certain god powers several times during a game
* God powers that create units hostile to everyone, including the player that invokes them

Atlantean citizens are much more effective in work than their Greek, Norse or Egyptian counterparts, but cost 3 population units each. They are also much slower to train. Atlanteans gain favour through town centers. The more town centers they control, the faster the rate of favour gain.

Scenario
The scenario is only a third of the length of the one in original, and this time focuses mostly on the Atlantean civilization and its leader, Arkantos' son, Kastor. Arkantos, who is now a god, also makes a few minor appearances here. The story is set ten years after the events of the Age of Mythology storyline.

spoiler
The story begins with Kronos, who was still trapped in Tartarus, sending his servant, who is not named in the game but the fans call him Kronny, to possess the body of the Theocrat Krios, an Atlantean leader.

It then cuts to the Norselands, where the suffering Atlanteans, led by Kastor and Krios, are trying to rebuild their civilization after it was destroyed ten years ago. The Theocrat leads them to a new island home called New Atlantis, saying it was the imprisoned Titans who helped them, and convinces his people, including Kastor, to worship them.

The Greeks are angered with the Atlanteans' new choice of gods, and wage war against them with the help of the Norse and Egyptians. Atlantean troops then launch attacks in Egypt, the Norselands and even Mount Olympus.

All these events were actually part of Kronos' plan to use the Atlanteans to set himself free after his first plan with Gargarensis failed. The Atlanteans had killed the Olympians' followers and destroyed their temples as they fought in the aforementioned war, which apparently had weakened the power of the Greek gods. This allowed a few minor Titans to escape Tartarus and make way for Kronos and the other Titans.

These are stopped by Kastor, who realized he was tricked by the possessed Theocrat, along with Ajax and Amanra from Age of Mythology. The heroes then travel to New Atlantis where Kronos, king of the Titans, is set free by his servant. To stop him, Kastor and his allies summon the benevolent earth goddess, Gaia, a Titan herself, who defeats Kronos and imprisons him once more. Kastor then kills Krios and becomes leader of Atlantis.

Gods
The three major Atlantean gods are:
*Gaia
*Kronos
*Oranos

Minor gods include:
*Classical Age
**Leto
**Oceanus
**Prometheus
*Heroic Age
**Hyperion
**Rhea
**Theia
*Mythic Age
**Atlas
**Hecate

This is a list of mods for the first-person shooter computer game Battlefield 1942.

Like Half-Life and some other popular FPS games, Battlefield 1942 has spawned a tremendous number of mods. Most do not progress very far and are abandoned without ever producing a public release. Some are very limited and just include some gameplay changes or even a different loading screen while others are total conversions that modify content and gameplay extensively.

A few mods have become popular and are nearly games in their own right. Early modifications of BF1942 are impressive in that there was no SDK, but recently a "Mod Development Kit" has been produced .

With the release of the BF1942 sequel Battlefield Vietnam, some mods have either made a new version or have continued development with that game. Battlefield Vietnam uses an updated version of the Refractor 2 game engine. Also, many unreleased mods that started as a BF1942 mod, switch to BFV to cover up their slow development, to take advantage of the more advanved engines or in hopes that problems encountered with BF1942 will be solved by a different game engine. Some mods have moved/switched to the computer games Soldner, Half-Life 2 or others for the same reasons. (See also: List of Battlefield Vietnam mods)

A mods popularity rise and fall with releases of both other mods, and other games. For example, the release of Battlefield Vietnam greatly reduced players of the Eve of Destruction mod as the total number of active players of all mods. A new version release can skyrocket a newly released mod in popularity, as many players try out the new content, only to plummet just as quickly to a smaller player base. New releases will usually garner new players to a mods 'standard player base' enabling it to survive. (See Comparisons of Battlefield 1942 mods)

(Lists may be not entirely complete and not up to date)

Released mods
Incomplete list of released mods (as of 2005) that have a larger amount of content and changes. (Released mods have a light grey backround.)
Battlefield 2 is a newly-released computer game based on the Electronic Arts Battlefield franchise. Battlefield 2 was announced in the Spring of 2004. It utilizes a new engine for gameplay, physics, and graphics, as well as other functions. Battlefield 2 is often compared to the popular Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942 as both games take place in modern times and, after the acquisition of Desert Combat developer Trauma Studios by DICE, developers that worked on Desert Combat went to work on Battlefield 2. However, Trauma Studios has since been closed.

Overview
The game is about a hypothetical war in the near future between three powerful factions: the United States Marines, China, and the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC). The battles, however, only feature U.S. vs. MEC and U.S. vs. China. The armies use modern weaponry: The Americans use well-known American weaponry such as the Abrams tank, the Chinese mostly use Chinese-made copies of Soviet weapons (such as the Type 56 Assault rifle, though the game calls it an AK-47), and the Middle Eastern Coalition use mostly Russian weapons. The various forces still use the trademark feature of the Battlefield series, the spawning vehicles that any player can hop into.

Battlefield 2 was originally scheduled to be released on March 21, 2005, but was delayed until June 22, 2005 for North America, and June 24, 2005 for Europe and Australia. A version of Battlefield 2 is also being developed for consoles, named Battlefield 2: Modern Combat.

Since its release, Battlefield 2 has proven to be one of the most demanding games ever made on user hardware. Users who have 1 GB of RAM, normally a huge amount, have reported slowdowns and stuttering problems. It may well be that the next generation of games make 1 GB of RAM the minimum for smooth play, and 2 GB the recommended. Only time will tell if future developers will follow suit in listing high system requirements in exchange for the best special effects.

An expansion pack is being planned for the game, named Battlefield 2: Special Forces, allowing to play six special forces units: U.S. Navy SEALs, British SAS, Russian Spetsnaz, MEC Special Forces, a Rebel group, and insurgents. It will contain six new armies (compared to just three in Battlefield 2), ten new vehicles, twelve new weapons, and eight maps. The release is expected to ship this winter.
Bugs & Patches
A [ftp://largedownloads.ea.com/pub/patches/bf2patch_v_102.exe patch 1.02] has been released to fix memory leaks and other bugs, the former of which was so problematic that at one stage the official Battlefield 2 website was advising users to use the unpatched 'out of the box' version of the game instead of upgrading to patch 1.01

The previous games in the Battlefield franchise (Battlefield 1942 & Battlefield Vietnam) were also plagued by bugs and gameplay-balance issues in the early released versions, and only became fully stable after a series of patches in the months following the release.

A v1.03 patch has been announced by EA that will include 140 fixes to the game engine and gameplay/balance/exploit issues. Of the biggest updates will be the inclusion much-desired favorites list to the server browser, and a complete revamp of the teamkill punishment system. This patch is expected to be out by late August 2005.

An unoffical patch allows use of the Ti series of 4 cards

Ranked Servers and Recent Exploits
The Battlefield 2 Ranked Server System allows for a means of comparing yourself to other "hardcore" players. According to EA Games ...

Ranked servers will be where the hardcore bump heads and clash knives. All Ranked Servers will be configured to provide the definitive competitive Battlefield experience. Friendly Fire is on, and TK will be punished by default, so all players will need to use their tools wisely and watch out for the tools that have been deployed by their teammates. If, for example, you have a hankering to be the best sniper to ever stare down the sights of an SVD in Battlefield 2, these are the servers on which you will have to walk the walk. If you’d rather not spend your time trying to figure out where the world’s #1 sniper is popping your melon from, see below.

Ranked servers will be heavily administrated and have Punkbuster on. The integrity of the stats system is of paramount importance to EA Games (and of course to those participating in it) and so we will be monitoring things constantly. At the end of the day, Ranked servers will be a safe, regulated environment on which the most competitive players will be spending their time. If this environment doesn’t sound right for you, that’s great. That’s what Unranked servers are for.

Recent concern has arisen within the community, however, regarding exploits of this ranking system. Users have been known to use a "medic exploit" where they will simply kill a person, revive him, and then kill him again, thus gaining an extraordinary amount of global points. The Battlefield 2 Community has been crying out to EA Games regarding these exploits. Sean Decker, the Executive Producer, has recently responded to an email about this, and mentions deleting scores and awards ("or have more drastic actions taken") of exploiting players.

See the 'Team - Warchild' incident if you wish to know more about exploiting and its concequences!

Maps
Main article: Battlefield 2 Maps

BF2 shipped with 12 maps. Depending on the number of people the server is configured accomodate, the scope and objectives of maps change. For example, when "Gulf of Oman" is played with only 16 people, it is an infantry and armor combat scenario with 4 objectives to capture. With more players, 2 new bases open up, spawning fighter jets and helicopters. Single-player mode only allows access to the former, to the extent that purchasers who are unable or unwilling to play online have no access to many of the game's vehicles.

Infantry Classes
BF2 players can pick from seven basic classes:

*Assault troops carry an assault rifle with attached grenade launcher good for close infantry combat, and can throw smoke grenades to cover friendly forces.
*Snipers pick enemies off from long range with a sniper rifle, and can plant Claymore anti-personnel mines.
*Spec Ops can destroy structures and vehicles with C4 explosive charges, and also carry an automatic carbine.
*Engineers have the wrench, which allows them to repair vehicles (including transports they are riding on), can deploy anti-vehicle mines, and defend themselves with a shotgun.
*Medics are armed with a standard assault rifle, but also have the ability to heal teammates with medpacks and revive them with a defibrillator, which works like the adrenaline syringe in Enemy Territory. The defibrillator can also be used to zap enemy soldiers, although the knife is more effective because it does not need to charge up after attacks.
*Support troops wield a light machine gun that can provide heavy covering fire, and replenish allies' supplies with ammunition packs.
*Anti-Tank soldiers have both a submachine gun and short-range anti-tank rockets, which destroy lighter vehicles easily and can damage even heavily armored tanks and APCs with careful targetting.

In addition, all classes carry a basic pistol and combat knife, and Spec Ops, Engineer, Medic, and Assault (with unlocked weapon) classes spawn with hand grenades. Experienced players can unlock alternate weapons for each class. For instance, snipers may choose a more powerful .50 caliber sniper rifle, and Spec Ops can use a G36C carbine instead of the M4A1.

These unlockable weapons can be enabled to all players by default, server side, but only on non-ranked servers. On ranked servers, the players must earn points and become promoted to a higher rank in order to unlock specific weapons if they wish to use them.

Different classes are also able to sprint for different lengths of time than others, and have different amounts of body armour. Support and Assault classes can sprint for 8 seconds. The Anti-Tank class can sprint for 9 seconds. All other classes can sprint for 10 seconds.

For the specific kits assigned to forces on each side, see Battlefield 2 Infantry Classes.
Demo
A demo is available for download from major game sites featuring a single map ("Gulf of Oman") for both single-player and multi-player. The 16-person version of the map has a time limit of 10 minutes. the 32-person version has a time limit of 12 minutes. The 64-person version is unavailable in the demo, though up to 64 players can still play on the 32-person map. The demo also limits players to using stock weapons with each kit.

It was discovered soon after the demo release that code could be modified to circumvent some of the limits imposed on the demo. These included removing the time limit, as well as allowing players to use all locked weapons. EA quickly responded by delisting servers that were running with such modifications.
