== Overstock.com ==
Upon the departure of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_M._Byrne Patrick Byrne] on August 22, 2019, Johnson became the interim CEO of Overstock [5] One month later, on September 23, 2019, he was appointed CEO.[6] [7]
Johnson has been an integral part of Overstock's growth from a small start-up to a publicly traded company with over $3 billion in sales and nearly 2,000 employees. Under Johnson’s leadership, Overstock has been named one of Forbes’ “100 Most Trustworthy Companies,” and has won numerous awards - including seven consecutive Mobile Web Awards for Best Retail App,[8] a Gold Stevie Award for Company of the Year in 2012,[9] and Compuware's 2011 Best of the Web Gold award.[10] Most recently, the company received a Loyalty360 Gold award for Employee Engagement & Impact and Loyalty360 Silver award for Technology & Trends.[11] [https://www.furniturelightingdecor.com/overstock-recognized-employee-engagement-tech-innovation-loyalty360-awards and named on Forbes’ list of America’s Best Midsized Employers of 2021].
Overstock.com previously paid to list products on Google but now that independent seller listings are free, Overstock is also adding low-margin products. Speaking to the New York Times in April 2021 about the benefits of Google’s drive to present itself as a cheaper and less restrictive option for independent sellers, Johnson said, “When all shopping starts and stops at Amazon, that’s bad for the industry. It’s nice to have another 800-pound tech gorilla in this space.”[12]
In June 2020, the U.S. General Services Administration announced that Overstock is one of three companies chosen for a pilot program to provide an online marketplace for federal agencies. Overstock joins Amazon and Thermo Fisher Scientific in the three-year program. Under this program, five government agencies - Environmental Protection Agency, Veteran Administration, Department of Justice, Labor Department, and General Services Administration - will be allowed to make any purchase under $10,000 from the approved websites. “Ever since I was old enough to start reading and caring about the newspaper, I’ve read stories about gold-plated toilet seats or whatever it is that the government was buying the wrong way,” Johnson told KSL.com. “This is going to let them go to a website, know they’re getting a great deal, and move forward.”[13]

== Coronavirus Pandemic ==
Overstock’s sales surged 75 percent in 2020, to $2.5 billion, boosted by demand for patio furniture, trampolines, sofas, rugs, and other home furnishings during the Coronavirus pandemic. Johnson spoke to the Washington Post about the unprecedented delays, saying that, initially, manufacturing overseas was the bottleneck, but “now, it’s the shipping that’s the slowdown.”[14] He told NBC News that the furniture and appliance delivery backup “has been unparalleled,” and that Overstock only sells what they have in stock. The challenge, he said, is keeping their warehouses full.[15]
In August 2020, Johnson reported that Overstock’s “number of new customers more than tripled over a year.” With its customer base rapidly growing, InvestorPlace.com says that the company is “starting to become a truly big player in the e-commerce space” and “may have what it takes to become the first true, pure-play competitor of Amazon.[16]
During the pandemic, Overstock has focused more on customer self-service automation and adding other helpful resources. The company hired hundreds of new call center agents, tech analysts, statisticians, and pricing experts. “We found some great talent in industries that had been hurt by the pandemic such as gaming, hospitality, and travel,” Johnson told HFN Digital in September 2020.[17]
In an interview with Home Textiles Today, Johnson said, “Overstock had an incredible year in 2020. The operational improvements we began making at the end of 2019 enabled us to benefit from this unprecedented environment in which we all find ourselves increasingly working. Learning, and living in our homes.”[18] He told Furniture Today, “We have found in the current environment that accuracy in the delivery time matters more than speed for large parcel items.”[19]
Johnson told Cheddar News in March 2021 that Overstock’s recent swell of success stemed from a combination of pandemic-era buying habits and a boom in the housing market. He pointed to macro-trends, such as new constructions hitting a 14-year high, indicating a continued growth in the housing market.[20][21]

== Medici Ventures ==
Overstock launched a subsidiary called Medici Ventures in 2014 to focus on using blockchain technology to democratize capital, eliminate frictional middlemen, and rehumanize commerce. Jonathan Johnson served as president of Medici Ventures from 2016-2021. Under his leadership, Medici made investments in and grew many cutting edge blockchain technology and fintech businesses including tZERO, Bitt, Medici Land Governance, GrainChain, PeerNova, and Voatz.
In early 2021, Johnson brokered a deal to convert Medici Ventures into a fund managed by venture capital firm Pelion Venture Partners.[22] [23]

== tZERO ==
Overstock has a majority ownership in tZERO, a company that has drawn attention from the cryptocurrency community. tZERO operates as an alternative trading system (ATS), which are venues that usually compete with more traditional securities exchanges for order flow. In April 2021, Johnson told MSN he hopes that tZERO, which offers some services similar to Coinbase, will one day be a legitimate rival to it. He envisions tZERO soon achieving what he describes as a “Holy Grail” for a trading platform, telling MarketWatch that what you want to have is a platform that has a “digital wallet that let’s people hold and trade crypto, NFTs (nonfungible tokens), stocks, and digitized securities.”[22]

== Short-Selling ==
Johnson spoke to CNBC in February 2021 about how Overstock has battled attacks from short-sellers for years, only to come out stronger, with the company’s stock nearly doubling in January 2021 after soaring nearly 600 percent in 2020.[23]

==2016 Campaign for Utah Governor==
Johnson, a [[Republican Party (United States)|Republican]], formally announced his candidacy for governor on August 15, 2015 at the Republican state GOP convention<ref>Roche, L. (2015, August 15).
===Education===
Johnson and his running mate, Robyn Bagley, focused on education during their announcement to run together for governor and lieutenant governor, and expressed their intention to put education decisions into the hands of private companies. Both running mates voiced support for vouchers that would allow public funding to go to private schools.<ref name=fight /><ref>{{cite web | url=http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865652490/Three-Utah-gubernatorial-candidates-announce-running-mates.html | title=Deseret News: Johnson/Bagley promise to put parents in charge of their children's education}}</ref>

===Public Land===
Approximately 64% of all of the land in Utah is owned by the federal government. Jonathan Johnson planned to sue the federal government for Utah to gain more control over these public lands.<ref name=publiclandssuit>{{cite web | url=http://kutv.com/news/local/johnson-stop-talking-and-go-to-court | title="KUTV 2 News: "Johnson: Stop Talking and Take Feds to Court"}}</ref>
