Sport in Estonia

Kanter:

Independence arrived in 1991. But as early as 1989, the Estonian Olympic Committee had resumed work and the Central Union of Estonian Sport started in 1990. Estonian sport soon regained its position in world sport.

The same occurred in Olympic sport. In honour of Erika Salumäe's victory in Barcelona, 1992, the Estonian tricolor was hoisted once again, after 56 years.

The most popular fields of sport are light athletics (Olympic winners Jüri Tarmak and Jaak Uudmäe); basketball (Olympic winner Tiit Sokk, Martin Müürsepp in NBA); chess (grandmasters Jaan Ehlvest and Lembit Oll); and cycling (Olympic winners Aavo Pikkuus and Erika Salumäe). Basketball is the most popular ball game in Estonia, and it is in this sport that the best results have been achieved. Though Tiit Sokk fought for the gold at the Seoul Olympics as a member of the Soviet team, he did it for his people.

Estonians are well known for cross-country skiing, especially Andrus Veerpalu and Kristina Šmigun. There are also many sports where Estonia has shown some great results

Judo
Judo is one of the most successful field of sport for Estonia. Since 1996, Estonia have won 21 medals at major tournaments, included 3 Olympic medals, 4 World Championships medals and 14 medals won at European Championships. Indrek Pertelson, Aleksei Budõlin and Martin Padar are the most famous judo athletes in Estonia in past years

Skiing
The Estonians are a Northern people and skiing is a part of their life-style. Thousands take part in the Tartu Ski Marathon, which is included in the international Worldloppet series.

After declaring independence from Russia in 1918, Estonia first competed as a nation at the 1920 Summer Olympics, although the National Olympic Committee was established in 1923. The first Winter Olympics were the 1924 Winter Olympics. Estonian athletes took part of the Olympic Games until the country was invaded by the Soviet Union in 1940. He competed at the 2004 Olympics, but didn't reach the final. 2005 was his breakthrough year as he won silver medals at the World Championships and World Athletics Final, took home a victory in the European Cup and won the World University Games. He also threw more than 70 metres for the first time.
Erki Nool (born June 25, 1970 in Võru, Estonia) is an Estonian decathlete and politician.

He is a winner of the gold medal for Decathlon in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Although Nool did not place first in any individual event, his total score was the highest. Nool won the title after the competition referee decided to over-rule a discus judge who had red-flagged his last and only valid attempt due to alleged step-out. The reinstatement of his 43.66-metre third throw sparked unsuccessful counter-protests from other teams. Nool took gold ahead of the Czech Roman Šebrle and American Chris Huffins.

He was elected to the Estonian Parliament, Riigikogu, on 4th March 2007, representing the Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica party.
