It can be verified in exactly the same way that any other publication can be verified, by obtaining a copy and looking at it. :Thanks!! By the way, I didn't remove the 'speedy deletion' tag. I removed the 'advert' tag, which seemed to have been added as a face-saving measure by the reviewer. To be honest I was on the verge of deleting my account and leaving WP at that point. At least the reviewer later apologised, which was appreciated. 
:There seem to be too many new article reviewers. They often manage to review articles within a couple of minutes of the article going 'live', which doesn't give a chance for the many well-meaning editors to check and amend the new article. Thank you for your review of my newly created article on Russ Spiegel. Because this is my first attempt to become involved in Wikipedia, I need all the guidance I can get!

I was slightly surprised by your hesitation to deem Spiegel "notable" enough for inclusion on Wikipedia. I was a senior editor at ''Current Biography'' magazine for more than a dozen years, and we were preparing a lengthy article on him for publication in an upcoming issue. (As you may have heard given your involvement in the world of reference publishing, ''Current Biography'' was purchased late last year by a large information-services conglomerate, effectively placing many editors and writers out of work and putting the kibosh on several articles that were in the works.)

At any rate, I've revised the piece and re-submitted it for further review and hope that you will reconsider its publication. I've included, for example, many more external links (Spiegel is well represented on such sites as imdb.com, Rovi's All-Music Guide database, and All ABout Jazz), which confirm his impressive professional credentials. Additionally, I've been more specific as to his record labels, which include such international outfits as Double Moon and Steeplechase. (Not sure if you're a jazz fan, but if so, I know you'll agree that those are very well-regarded names.)

I'd also like to point out that a short piece on the German version of Wikipedia has been deemed acceptable for inclusion. While Spiegel enjoys a large fan base overseas, he works for the most part in the U.S. now, and I believe he should be represented on the English-language site.

Many thanks in advance for all your hard work. During my time at ''Current Biography'', I came to value Wikipedia as a wonderful resource. (Speaking of my former employer, while it was gratifying to see a Wikipedia article on ''Current Biography'', the piece is not entirely accurate at this point. I noted that you declined this article because the references were from car magazines. As these are the most likely and generally only independent source for this type of company I wonder what alternative source you might suggest? My understanding is that the magazines are within independent test criteria and article significance matches the policy guidelines. Thanks for your comments on my talk page. I have read the Notability section as you suggested and disagree with your conclusion with regard to the Alternative Cars Limited articale for the following reasons.
1. The coverage in the cited sources is neither trivial nor incidental. They are third party and reliable.
2. Its notability is based on having attracted notice from reliable sources with an interest in the international automotive kit car field
3. The sources are independent of the company, mutliple, and their coverage could not be classified as trivial
4. The sources are international, not just local - United States and United Kingdom, in addition to national (New Zealand) ones
5. While some sources contain an element of promotion, I have taken care to avoid this.

I also sought review and advice from a major contributor to the Wiki Automobiles Project - their comment was:

"... one of you articles (Alternative Cars Limited) seems to have enough references to be "worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia" dont know why is was not accepted, the Reid Steam Car article could benefit if you could find more sources to give it more "notability", you can also ask help from WP:CARS discussion ... -->Typ932 T·C 20:01, 12 January 2012 (UTC)"

For the Reid car, I think you are correct in suggesting its inclusion in an article about Reid, himself.

I am of two minds on the Countess Mouldings item - Short has continued to develop other business relating to a unique sheep shearing product, which might put him into the some category as Reid. However, at this stage his car is more significant than him.

If you read [[WP:NCORP]] you will see that it is recommended to have at least one example regional or national coverage of the subject, to demonstrate its notability, "On the other hand, attention solely from local media, or media of limited interest and circulation, is not an indication of notability". ::I have been on a rather long excursion through the guidelines - at best I would describe them as vague and at worst confusing relating to Notability. Given the pages of discussion on Notability and the meaning of "limited interest and circulation" I can only conclude that it seems to become a matter of opinion as to whether a kitcar magazine constitutes a publication of limited interest and circulation - not helpful to either of us. I therefore turned my attention to other Notability guidelines [[Wikipedia:Notability (astronomical objects)]] and [[Wikipedia:Notability (aircraft)]], the latter being an essay rather than a guideline. These seem to show a split in the way Wikipedians view notability. As a sweeping generality (please excuse me for this) those from a scientific/literary viewpoint seem to prefer to limit what is notable in their field, while those from mechanical/technological one seem to want to include more. From my personal preference, I tend to lean towards the latter and I think that would be similar for those on the[[ Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles|Wiki Automobile project]] - the projects stated aim is to "co-ordinate the effort to compile articles on all types and classes of automobiles, automotive parts and technology of the automotive industry". A troll through the various autombile and aircraft pages shows some very obscure types, which in themselves must be of limited interest even from my viewpoint. So despite my best efforts I don't think I have resolved much more than to agree to disagree. Let me know if you have any suggest/thoughts on the matter as I am quite interested. You have declined this article because it doesn't seem significant. In terms of the New Zealand and international replica car scene Countess Mouldings made replica Lamborghini Countach's of considerable quality and desirability. There is a reasonable amount of discussion about these cars in kit car circles (a quick Google search will show a number of discussions within blog sites). True they are not a Toyota or General Motors of this world but in terms of where they a placed they are significant. You have commented that the car was short lived and not notable as the reason for decline. There are many short lived car makes that are included within Wikipedia - there time span is not relevant. The article was submited because it captures one of New Zealand's earliest attempts to make motor vehicles, it is possibly the first indigenous steam car, and if the New Zealand auto manufacturer section is to be complete, must be included. True, there is not a lot to write at this stage but as further work is done more detail may come to light.

Thanks for your response. Yes I have considered an article on Reid himself, but I would like to attend to that at a later stage. Reid is a quite interesting character from his biography and would be owrth further treatment.

My focus at the moment is trying to ensure all the assorted New Zealand car makes are identified in Wiki. Some like this only have a small amount of information, while others are more detailed. I guess this article sits somewhere around as Stub class, but it is important as it forms part of the bigger picture. My intention is to continue expanding the article as I find more information, something I have done with the other articles I have written. Hi there! Thanks for reviewing my article about the English band New Build which is a collaboration between members of Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem.

Although as you state the band are relatively new, the members of the band are long term collaborators who have been musicians of significance for almost 10 years.

Consequently there is a large amount of media interest in the band, numerous articles appearing in publications such as Rolling Stone Magazine, Pitchfork, URB Magazine, FACT Magazine, The Guardian (in the UK), the NME, to name just a few.

There have also been almost 30,000 plays of the bands singles on their Soundcloud page which further indicates a relatively high degree of public interest.

The problem is that a lot of the articles appearing about the band are factually incorrect, which is why I was motivated to try and create the page. The function of Wikipedia being to give information in an impartial manner on significant things.

:Apeiron is a 7-track CD that clocks in at around 31-minutes, which technically classifies it as somewhere in between an EP and an LP. Similarly, their single for Kharnha is actually more of an EP than an SP. So I am a bit confused as to how I should list them. Also, the name discrepancy is due to the fact that "Альбом" is the Russian name of the album, while "Apeiron" is the name of the release in all other territories. And last but not least, I have re-edited the article to include their appearance in Dark City magazine, with citations included. I hope this helps! And thank you very much for the speedy reply.

thanks for reviewing the ZMBH article.

Regarding your first suggestion: the ZMBH is a central scientific research center under the direct guidance of the Rector of the University and independent from the Faculty of Biosciences. In fact, professors who work at the ZMBH are members of several Faculties. Therefore the two cannot be merged into one article.

You also commented that the ZMBH did not seem notable enough in its own right.
A similar article has been published on the German Wikipedia website but we think an English version is needed, too, because this is an international research center (40% non-German scientists, from all over the world). When prospective graduate and undergraduate students, postdocs or faculty get interested they should be able to get basic information via Wikipedia and other persons with an interest in scientific non-commercial research should also be able to do so.

Concerning the notability, one can state that the ZMBH is among the leading research centers in the field of molecular biology in Europe, definitely on a par with:

the [[Institut Pasteur de Lille]],

the [[Weill Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology]],

the [[Institut de biologie moléculaire et cellulaire]]

and the [[Babraham Institute]]

If one only measured the merit of an institute by the number of Nobel Prize winners, only a few places on earth would make it onto that list. Therefore, other criteria, like for example the number of publications in the most renowned journals of that field should count. The ZMBH for example published:

10 papers in [[Nature (journal)|''Nature'']] and

15 papers in [[Science (journal)|''Science'']].

This alone should be proof enough for the world-wide reputation of the ZMBH in the field of molecular biology and cell biology. If this should really be needed, other scientific performance metrics could be provided.

A Google search for the ZMBH via the English search engine produces over 400,000 relevant hits.

Furthermore entries like the one for [[Stefan Jentsch]] or the current president of the Max-Planck-Society, [[Peter Gruss]], would profit if the ZMBH could be cross-referenced as a site of their career.
I hope that these arguments are convincing enough to let this article pass.

I am having a hard time figuring out which copyright tags would be appropriate to use for this image. The picture is a headshot of Alan Kazdin for his biography wikipedia page; it was not my own work, but the image was given to me by Kazdin with permission to use. Is that permissible, or do I need more information? The photograph was taken by someone hired by Yale University with the intention of the work being used for promotional purposes. I tried to tag as non-free promotional but was told that a free image might be reasonably found and without any changes this image would be deleted. I think I should still be able to use this image but just with more appropriate copyright tags. Thanks for your help.

Regarding a DASHBot notice on my talkpage, as it removed an image from a sandbox article. I took [[:File:Dyers_Compendium_1959.jpg|this photo]] of a set of books published in 1959, but I listed the photo under {{tl|Non-free book cover}} just to be safe. Given that these are new editions, and that the ''original'' publication of the books were back in 1908, and are now public domain, does this 1959 edition qualify for any copyright? Before anyone asks, why don't I just use a photo of the 1908 version: because I don't have the 1908 version to hand, and doubt I could afford them, they will be a rare collector's item now, and not bought to sit and flick through for Wiki. That aside, anyone with clearer understanding of book cover copyright law, in relation to new editions, a confirmation of where I stand would be appreciated: public domain or non-free until 2029 for this edition by the publisher? I'm aware the textual content is deemed public domain, so this refers purely to the items pictured. The covers have no design - just plain red, leather bound. The publisher's logo (of a house) is really the only thing we can see on the books themselves. That design on the case is also just a big wrap-around sticker, with a synopsis on the rear panel, but I'm not even sure if it is considered a "cover" or a label. The logo on that label was raised in a "helpme" response, as to whether it was used on the originals, as that would probably render it public domain. I'm afraid that this book design would indeed be considered copyrightable, even though there isn't that much content. If you can establish that the underlying engraving for the case label was used in the original 1908 publication, then my advice would be to scan or photograph the label alone. I know the spine design seems very minimal, but courts have upheld copyrights for things like that when somebody tries to bring out a book that looks exactly like a publisher's signature spine style. :I have checked the book and it is not the same, and possibly not close enough to retain copyright. In the original, the snake head has more detail and is longer, the snake crosses the wheel on the other side, the snake is fatter, the wheel has a 3 dimensional look, looking down on top slightly. So whether this is a derivative (possible) or a creation that somewhat resembles the book symbol(possible). The book states that the snake wheel symbol is a trademark. There is a picture on flickr licensed with cc-by-nc. And this means we can't use it given its licensing. Now, what if I were to take it and make a derivative work from it, and license that using a compatible license (e.g. cc-by-sa). It would seem that, without knowing much about cc licenses, since since the author didn't include the sa or "share alike" attribute, that I would be free to license the derivative work however I pleased, as long as I gave the original author credit and (myself) didn't use it for commercial purposes. Earlier today I uploaded three images that consisted of sections of an 1850 map of Maryland by J. C. Sidney. I annotated the maps to highlight the location of certain roads on the maps; otherwise the map sections were unchanged from the original. Given its age (> 150 years old), I believe that the map (i.e., the sections I have scanned) may be used freely in Wikipedia articles. Please correct me if I am wrong. At any rate, subsequent to uploading the map files to Wikipedia, I uploaded them to Wikipedia Commons, where I have made use of them in the article "Old Harford Road." Please forgive me for having uploaded the files to Wikipedia; it was a mistake.

This photograph was supplied by the owner in France (a local history organization) specifically for the purpose of illustrating the article on Gustave Rives. The photograph dates from 1916 and should be out of copyright. The building in the photograph, by the way, no longer exists.

I inserted the code {{PD-US-1923-abroad|pdsource=yes}}under "Description," but there is still a notice to the effect that "This image does not have a copyright tag."

What additional information or permission is required to satisfy the requirements?

I am having a hard time figuring out which copyright tags would be appropriate to use for this image. The picture is a headshot of Alan Kazdin for his biography wikipedia page; it was not my own work, but the image was given to me by Kazdin with permission to use. Is that permissible, or do I need more information? The photograph was taken by someone hired by Yale University with the intention of the work being used for promotional purposes. I tried to tag as non-free promotional but was told that a free image might be reasonably found and without any changes this image would be deleted. I think I should still be able to use this image but just with more appropriate copyright tags. Thanks for your help.

Regarding a DASHBot notice on my talkpage, as it removed an image from a sandbox article. I took [[:File:Dyers_Compendium_1959.jpg|this photo]] of a set of books published in 1959, but I listed the photo under {{tl|Non-free book cover}} just to be safe. Given that these are new editions, and that the ''original'' publication of the books were back in 1908, and are now public domain, does this 1959 edition qualify for any copyright? Before anyone asks, why don't I just use a photo of the 1908 version: because I don't have the 1908 version to hand, and doubt I could afford them, they will be a rare collector's item now, and not bought to sit and flick through for Wiki. That aside, anyone with clearer understanding of book cover copyright law, in relation to new editions, a confirmation of where I stand would be appreciated: public domain or non-free until 2029 for this edition by the publisher? I'm aware the textual content is deemed public domain, so this refers purely to the items pictured. The covers have no design - just plain red, leather bound. The publisher's logo (of a house) is really the only thing we can see on the books themselves. That design on the case is also just a big wrap-around sticker, with a synopsis on the rear panel, but I'm not even sure if it is considered a "cover" or a label. The logo on that label was raised in a "helpme" response, as to whether it was used on the originals, as that would probably render it public domain. :I have checked the book and it is not the same, and possibly not close enough to retain copyright. In the original, the snake head has more detail and is longer, the snake crosses the wheel on the other side, the snake is fatter, the wheel has a 3 dimensional look, looking down on top slightly. So whether this is a derivative (possible) or a creation that somewhat resembles the book symbol(possible). The book states that the snake wheel symbol is a trademark. This issue has come up with NASA images too where NASA specifically states some images are not theirs and you will find those images attributed to external photographers/organisations. We have to assume these governmental organisation have some clue as to what is theirs and what is not, unless there are red flags indicating otherwise, such as credibly finding them elsewhere attributed to someone else. Thank you for your review of my newly created article on Russ Spiegel. Because this is my first attempt to become involved in Wikipedia, I need all the guidance I can get!

I was slightly surprised by your hesitation to deem Spiegel "notable" enough for inclusion on Wikipedia. I was a senior editor at ''Current Biography'' magazine for more than a dozen years, and we were preparing a lengthy article on him for publication in an upcoming issue. (As you may have heard given your involvement in the world of reference publishing, ''Current Biography'' was purchased late last year by a large information-services conglomerate, effectively placing many editors and writers out of work and putting the kibosh on several articles that were in the works.)

At any rate, I've revised the piece and re-submitted it for further review and hope that you will reconsider its publication. I've included, for example, many more external links (Spiegel is well represented on such sites as imdb.com, Rovi's All-Music Guide database, and All ABout Jazz), which confirm his impressive professional credentials. Additionally, I've been more specific as to his record labels, which include such international outfits as Double Moon and Steeplechase. (Not sure if you're a jazz fan, but if so, I know you'll agree that those are very well-regarded names.)

I'd also like to point out that a short piece on the German version of Wikipedia has been deemed acceptable for inclusion. While Spiegel enjoys a large fan base overseas, he works for the most part in the U.S. now, and I believe he should be represented on the English-language site.

Thanks for your comments on my talk page. I have read the Notability section as you suggested and disagree with your conclusion with regard to the Alternative Cars Limited articale for the following reasons.
1. The coverage in the cited sources is neither trivial nor incidental. They are third party and reliable.
2. Its notability is based on having attracted notice from reliable sources with an interest in the international automotive kit car field
3. The sources are independent of the company, mutliple, and their coverage could not be classified as trivial
4. The sources are international, not just local - United States and United Kingdom, in addition to national (New Zealand) ones
5. While some sources contain an element of promotion, I have taken care to avoid this.

I also sought review and advice from a major contributor to the Wiki Automobiles Project - their comment was:

"... one of you articles (Alternative Cars Limited) seems to have enough references to be "worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia" dont know why is was not accepted, the Reid Steam Car article could benefit if you could find more sources to give it more "notability", you can also ask help from WP:CARS discussion ... -->Typ932 T·C 20:01, 12 January 2012 (UTC)"

For the Reid car, I think you are correct in suggesting its inclusion in an article about Reid, himself.

I am of two minds on the Countess Mouldings item - Short has continued to develop other business relating to a unique sheep shearing product, which might put him into the some category as Reid. However, at this stage his car is more significant than him.

::I have been on a rather long excursion through the guidelines - at best I would describe them as vague and at worst confusing relating to Notability. Given the pages of discussion on Notability and the meaning of "limited interest and circulation" I can only conclude that it seems to become a matter of opinion as to whether a kitcar magazine constitutes a publication of limited interest and circulation - not helpful to either of us. I therefore turned my attention to other Notability guidelines [[Wikipedia:Notability (astronomical objects)]] and [[Wikipedia:Notability (aircraft)]], the latter being an essay rather than a guideline. These seem to show a split in the way Wikipedians view notability. As a sweeping generality (please excuse me for this) those from a scientific/literary viewpoint seem to prefer to limit what is notable in their field, while those from mechanical/technological one seem to want to include more. From my personal preference, I tend to lean towards the latter and I think that would be similar for those on the[[ Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles|Wiki Automobile project]] - the projects stated aim is to "co-ordinate the effort to compile articles on all types and classes of automobiles, automotive parts and technology of the automotive industry". A troll through the various autombile and aircraft pages shows some very obscure types, which in themselves must be of limited interest even from my viewpoint. So despite my best efforts I don't think I have resolved much more than to agree to disagree. Let me know if you have any suggest/thoughts on the matter as I am quite interested. True, there is not a lot to write at this stage but as further work is done more detail may come to light.

Thanks for your response. Yes I have considered an article on Reid himself, but I would like to attend to that at a later stage. Reid is a quite interesting character from his biography and would be owrth further treatment.

My focus at the moment is trying to ensure all the assorted New Zealand car makes are identified in Wiki. Some like this only have a small amount of information, while others are more detailed. I guess this article sits somewhere around as Stub class, but it is important as it forms part of the bigger picture. My intention is to continue expanding the article as I find more information, something I have done with the other articles I have written. Hi there! Thanks for reviewing my article about the English band New Build which is a collaboration between members of Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem.

Although as you state the band are relatively new, the members of the band are long term collaborators who have been musicians of significance for almost 10 years.

Consequently there is a large amount of media interest in the band, numerous articles appearing in publications such as Rolling Stone Magazine, Pitchfork, URB Magazine, FACT Magazine, The Guardian (in the UK), the NME, to name just a few.

There have also been almost 30,000 plays of the bands singles on their Soundcloud page which further indicates a relatively high degree of public interest.

The problem is that a lot of the articles appearing about the band are factually incorrect, which is why I was motivated to try and create the page. The function of Wikipedia being to give information in an impartial manner on significant things.

Hi, I must say the media upload instructions do seem much better presented than last time I looked (which would have been a long time ago). Thanks to all responsible. However, there is one circumstance, the one that applied to me, where it is not very clear how to proceed. This is when a graphic is one's own work but incorporates public-domain material created by someone else. In my case this material was a map. When you get to the first screen, none of the options actually apply. In the end I chose "It is entirely my own work" (not actually true) and noted the source of the map in the description. I hope that was right. Perhaps the instructions could be clarified in this respect? :It really depends on the situation in which the photograph was taken and who the photographer was. If the photo was taken for a commercial purpose and you just have a copy of the image (such as if it was a picture for/in a newspaper), then no you can't uploaded it. If the photo was taken by a family member or friend, and you've would up with the original, then it can be reasonably assumed to have been commissioned by your father, and therfore copyright would be his. It would have passed to the daughter, then to you, though inheritance, even if it never made the official legal documents. I'd say you can upload it, although I'm not a lawyer, I'm just working off of what little I know about inheritance. The rather obscure Norwegian documentary film ''Det grodde fram'' was published in 1947 by Lyder Selvig (died 1956). The film notably features WWII resistance member [[Erik Gjems-Onstad]] doing historically accurate reconstructions of his various wartime activities. This may mean that images that were taken before 1942 but only published after 1942 will still be in copyright in the UK and shouldn't be tagged as PD. == Image of a Burmese political prisoner ==

I just had an image of [[Min Ko Naing]]--[[:File:Min Ko Naing.jpg]]--speedy deleted without discussion under F7 criterion 1. While the situation in Burma seems to be thawing, it remains a crime to upload information that can be construed as anti-government to the Internet; Min Ko Naing's companion [[Zaw Htet Ko Ko]] was recently pardoned from a twenty-year sentence for such a crime. in addition, Min Ko Naing's only been out of jail for two days, and it remains unclear whether the released prisoners will be allowed to resume a role in public politics.

Obviously, we can hope that Wikipedia activist working in Burma will manage to seek him out, and then either fly to another country or risk her freedom to upload a free equivalent to this image. But in the meantime, would it be fair to say that no free equivalent is available? I hate to see an article on a such an important figure--his 1/13 release made the front pages of newspapers around the world, including the BBC--go unillustrated.

So I figure, show them the original to help them come to the understanding that it's not ''from'' some blacklist site. So I wanted to just take a pic of the magazine using the webcam and upload that. I'm working on the article on the [[Japanese House and Garden]] (Shofuso) -- it's a traditional Japanese house now located in Philadelphia, but originally built in the courtyard of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in the 1950s. I have an aerial photo of the original installation, and the copyright-holder (Esco) has given permission to use the image on Wikipedia, provided we attribute copyright to them.

Is this image suitable for upload to Wikipedia and inclusion in the article? If not, what do we need to get from the copyright holder to use the image?
