Between 1940 and 1991, Estonia was really a sovereign part of the Soviet Union. Estonian SSR unilaterally renamed as "Republic of Estonia" in May 1990, then proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union on 20 August 1991. Soviet Union officially recognized Estonian independence on 6 September 1991.
