In 2000, he was named by Genre magazine as one of the most influential people of the new century.[http://www.activistcash.com/biography_quotes.cfm/bid/1445] But when asked by the magazine who he considered influential, he joked, spree killer “[[Andrew Cunanan]], because he got [[Gianni Versace]] to stop using fur,” a quip for which he was widely criticized. Devante is sometimes confused with [[Donald DeGrate]], aka DeVante Swing, though there are clear distinctions between the two. Note the capitalization of the 'V' in the latter, as well as the capacity in which the two exist. DeVante Swing was a producer and musician for R&B group [[Jodeci]] in the early [[1990s]], while Devante is a solo recording artist. Devante is also much younger than DeVante Swing, who is 37. It should also be mentioned that there also exists a 'Devonte' who is a member of the [[Kingston, Jamaica]] based [[reggae]] group "Tanto Metro & Devonte." |

Critical of late conservationist and television personality "Crocodile Hunter" [[Steve Irwin]], he stated that "[Irwin] made a career out of antagonizing frightened wild animals, which is a very dangerous message to send to kids," adding, "If you compare him with a responsible conservationist like Jacques Cousteau, he looks like a cheap reality TV star."However, Matthews, had been know to drag the names of people through mud, who did not give PETA "donations". To this day many question where the money donated to the organization goes. Some have speculated that it all goes to Matthews multi-million dollar lifestyle<ref>[http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14626178/ PETA sheds no crocodile tears for Steve Irwin] MSNBC Sept 11, 2006</ref> |
