Academic Teams
The Lowell High School Academic Teams boasts one of the most successful programs in the state of Indiana. They participate in Spell Bowl, Decathlon, and Super Bowl. Lowell has won three state championships in the previous five years: a 2003 Super Bowl English state championship, and Decathlon state championships in 2004 and 2006. They are a member of the Northwest Hoosier Academic Conference, of which they have been champions since 2001.
Lowell has experienced moderate success in Spell Bowl. Spell Bowl consists of teams of ten students, who must spell words correctly by writing down what they hear an announcer pronounce. Each speller is given ten words. A cumulative total is kept between spellers as the competition proceeds. Lowell has never advanced to the state finals, but did win the Northwest Hoosier Conference title in 2003 and 2004. The program began slowly in 2001, but enjoyed rapid improvement under the direction of teachers Margaret Hurt and Sherry Peters, who began coaching the spellers in 2003.
Lowell is one of the state leaders in academic decathlon, the most rigorous of all competitions. Decathlon is a national event that first takes place at a state regional level, then a state level, and then a national level to determine participants. This year's nationals were held in Honolulu, Hawaii. While Lowell has never advanced to Nationals, they have won two state championships in 2004 and 2006.
The academic decathlon demands that its participants compete in ten areas of study: mathematics, science, social studies, literature, art, music, economics, speech, essay, and interview. Teams consist of nine students, who represents three different grade point ranges. Lowell has advanced to the state finals every year since 2001. In addition to their state championships, they have finished runner-up in 2001, 2005, and 2007. Despite their success, they have never finished ahead of Martinsville High School, the undisputed state leader. Lowell and Martinsville compete in different divisions because Martinsville has more students than Lowell. This makes it possible for both schools to win state championships, much like a class system in sports. However, when compared head to head, Lowell's cumulative score has never bested Martinsville.
Drama
Lowell Senior High School has had a good fine arts program recently run by Kevin Deal and Megan Frye. With an auditorium for the first time, Lowell High School has put on such plays as: "Bye Bye Birdie," "A Christmas Carol," "You Can't Take it With You," and "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown."
