LittleBigPlanet 3 is a puzzle-platformer video game developed by Sumo Digital for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
It was released in November 2014, and it is the third entry in the main LittleBigPlanet series, sixth entry overall. It was announced at Sony's E3 2014 media briefing on 9 June 2014. It was developed primarily by Sumo Digital, with XDev and Media Molecule assisting in an undisclosed capacity.[6]
The title received generally positive reviews, with critics citing the many new gameplay elements, such as the addition and different play styles of the new characters, while criticizing the co-op play and game breaking bugs.
Gameplay
New Characters
LittleBigPlanet 3 introduces three brand new characters in addition to Sackboy, each with their own unique traits and abilities.[7]
- Oddsock is a four-legged, dog-like character who can run faster than Sackboy, jump off walls and slide down walls at a controllable speed.
- Swoop is a bird-like character who can fly freely around levels, dive-bomb downwards at high speeds and can also pick up other light objects and characters.
- Toggle is a shape-shifting sack who when big is much larger and heavier than Sackboy, weighing down platforms or pressure plates. Toggle can also turn into a miniature version of himself, who can walk quickly on the surface of water and can fit through tight spaces.
- Sackboy also comes with some improvements. Now having the ability to climb around on materials[8][9], use a variety of new power ups and the ability to use the Sack Pocket, a device for holding items and power ups.
Creators can choose which character can play their level or design their own characters thanks to the new Capture Character tools. Creators can capture a Sackbot, with any amount of logic on its circuitry and have it spawn from a checkpoint. Players can even design characters that transform, much like Toggle. For example, a characters that changes from Oddsock to Swoop at the press of a button.
New Power-Ups
LittleBigPlanet 3 introduces several new power-ups which, when equipped, give players additional abilities. Once obtained, power-ups can be accessed any time through the Sackpocket, a new system which allows any power up to be used at any time throughout the story or in user-generated content.
Powerups found within the games main story include:
- Pumpinator - a hair dryer-esque device which can blow objects away or suck them towards the player.
- Blink Ball - a mechanical eye patch that fire balls. If a ball hits a Blink Panel the player is immediately teleported to that location.
- Hook Hat - headgear that can latch onto Bendy Rails (a new type of Connector in the game). This allows the player to quickly and smootly ride across layers.
- Boost Boots - a set of shoes that effectively give the player a double jump.
- Illuminator - a torch-like gadget that can be shone on portraits within Bunkum to unlocks secrets.
In addition to these pre-made power-ups, creators are also able to make their own using the new Blaster Handle. A new gadget that when when placed onto an object and put into a Powerup Pedestal will cause Sackthing to hold the object in that location. Effectively giving the player the ability to make Sackthing hold anything imaginable.
User Created Levels
In LittleBigPlanet 3, players can play any levels created in LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2.[10] The PlayStation 4 version of the game is rendered with an improved graphics engine and textures at 1080p resolution (while the PlayStation 3 version renders at 720p).[9]
There are also 70 new tools, in addition to enhanced ones retained from three previous titles, LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2 and LittleBigPlanet PS Vita.[11]
Unlike previous games in the series which had three playable layers of depth, LittleBigPlanet 3 allows creators to use 16 layers.[8]
Players are now limited by the new "Dynamic Thermometer", or the amount of hard drive capacity in the system.[8][12] In addition, players can now extend, or "stitch", their levels to make them longer.[13]
All previous downloadable content packs from LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2 are transferable to LittleBigPlanet 3.[14]
Story
LittleBigPlanet 3 takes place some time after Sackthing's previous adventures on Craftworld in LittleBigPlanet 2. During a short romp through The Gardens from LittleBigPlanet, Newton (Hugh Laurie), a dim-witted but well meaning wannabe creator teleports Sackthing to the world Bunkum. A creative and wacky planet, "where the skies are strewn with circling clouds of imagination. All ceaselessly pumped into Bunkum's atmosphere by the pounding Creative Heart at its core". After brief introductions Newton explains that, long before Sackthing's previous adventures, three gluttonous gargoyles known as 'The Titans' feasted on Bunkum's creative energy. It was the power of the three heroes that overcame the evil beings, trapping them within a tea tin and restoring peace to the planet.
However Newton believes that on that very night, Nana Pud (Susan Brown), an evil crone who lives in the towering 'Stitchem Manor', will unleash the destructive powers of The Titans once more, putting the fate of Bunkum in peril. Sackthing has no choice but to infiltrate the Manor and defeat Nana Pud's pots-and-pans guardian on the rooftops. It is only then that Sackthing's mistakes come to light. Nana Pud reveals that Newton is in fact her son and that he tricked Sackthing so he could get access to the tea tin containing The Titans. Newton believes that he can harness the powers of The Titans to bring new life to the planet, but upon opening the lid Newton is consumed by the evil that lays within. Now possessed, he plans to consume all of Bunkum's creativity. Flying into the sky, he leaves his mother and Sackthing to start a quest to awaken the three lost heroes and bring Newton to justice.
Nana Pud takes Sackthing to Manglewood, a land that was once home to Bunkum's thriving film industry. Sackthing meets Marlon Random (Nolan North) a charismatic, looney, movie star. Oddsock (the first of the three lost heroes) must be awoken and Marlon explains that three of Oddsock's marbles are located throughout Manglewood and must all be found to allow access to his domain. Upon finding all three, Marlon and Sackthing enter the crypts and find Oddsock. But when the newfound duo tries to leave to head to The Ziggurat, the next destination on their road trip, Newton appears and unleashes the first Titan upon Manglewood Swamp. Upon defeat they can finally leave to go find the next slumbering hero, Toggle.
Sackthing arrives in The Ziggurat, a land of fairytales and snow. Greeted by the cooky, yet forgetful Papal Mache (Peter Serafinowicz), Sackthing is once again tasked with finding the three missing marbles to awaken Toggle, the second hero. Upon finding all three Papal Mache and Sackthing journey into the caverns below The Zigurrat to find Toggle waiting for them. But once again when the gang tries to continue their journey Newton appears and unleashes the second Titan. After Toggle is victorious, Papal Mache warns that Newton will have gone after Bunkum's Creative Heart, located in the floating city of Bunkum Lagoon. The trio descends into the center of the planet to stop Newton and to awaken the third and final hero, Swoop.
Instantaneously on their entrance, Sackthing is rudely greeted by a frustrated Pinky Buflooms (Alix Wilton Regan), the crazed Queen of Bunkum. She explains that Newton has high-jacked The Creative Heart, locking it up and building a shonky fortress around it. After collecting the final two marbles, Sackthing, Toggle, Oddsock & Pinky ascend into the skies to meet Swoop, only to be greeted by Newton in his hot air balloon. Newton fires at their gondola, sending Sackthing plummeting, only to be rescued by Swoop in the nick of time. Swoop gives Newton the slip and the gang then infiltrate his hideout surrounding the heart. They confront him as he tries to escape only for Newton to capture Sackthing and flee into the bowels of his lair. The rest of the gang then work to free their friend and up reuniting Newton appears once more, releasing the third and final Titan. Upon doing so Newton collapses, receding into the depths of his subconscious where he conquers his self-doubting demons, turning him good once more.
The team work together to vanquish the final Titan, locking all three back inside the tea tin. As Newton's base collapses around them they leap out into the skies of Bunkum Lagoon, surely doomed. As they descend into the clouds, a great ship rises from the mists. To Newton's surprise the owner is Captain Pud (Lewis MacLeod), his father, who scolds him for ever releasing The Titans in the first place. They all return to Stitchem Manor, where Newton builds a Dimensional Doorway for the gang to return home. As Newton, Captain Pud and Nana Pud bid farewell Sackthing and his new friends enter the portal back to Craftworld.

LittleBigPlanet 3 received generally positive reviews from critics. It received an aggregated score of 80.84% on GameRankings based on 44 reviews[16] and 80/100 on Metacritic based on 68 reviews.[17]
Justin Clark from Joystiq gave the game a 4.5/5, praising the more connected level, change of pacing and scale in adventure mode, new characters and items, as well as the Hook Hat, a new feature in LittleBigPlanet 3. He also praised the user-friendly and satisfying creation mode and accessible tutorial. He stated that "LittleBigPlanet 3 is a foundation, upon which eager minds can start building even more inspiring content, and that process has been made more accessible than ever before."[24]
Jaz Rignall from USGamer gave the game a perfect score, saying that "LittleBigPlanet 3 has a tricky and challenging single-player game, joyously mad multiplayer action, and an incredibly in-depth creator mode combine to deliver what is without doubt, the best LittleBigPlanet game yet".[26]
Louise Blain from GamesRadar gave the game a 8/10, praising the inclusion of a tutorial, distant characters and intuitive menu. However, he criticized the adventure mode for being too short and having frustrating checkpoints, as well as slightly disappointing pre-built content. He summarized the review by saying that the game is a "Beautiful, creative and filled with knitted joy, LittleBigPlanet 3 does however disappoint in its Adventure mode’s comparatively sparse content. Nonetheless, it hands over an impressive array of exceptional design tools for budding creators."[20]
Kevin Dunsmore from Hardcore Gamer gave the game a 3.5/5, saying "LittleBigPlanet 3 is an endearing and charming game that will work its way into your heart thanks to its presentation and new characters. The end-game possibilities are endless thanks to the co-op, level creator and millions of community driven stages imported from past titles, but it’s held back due to Sumo Digital’s unwillingness to fully flesh out their ideas."[27]
Alexa Ray Corriea from GameSpot gave the game a 7/10. She praised the soundtrack, new characters introduced, drastic and refreshing gameplay changes when controlling different characters, freedom of movement and navigation, challenging but rewarding levels, as well as Popit Puzzles, a tutorial introduced in the creative mode. However, she criticized the limited use of other characters in both Adventure Mode and co-op multiplayer, as well as multiple game-breaking bugs. She stated that "The push for creativity is limited in the way you play the campaign, but it’s an overwhelming presence within creation mode, offering boundless ways to leave your own mark on Craftworld."[21]
