  • Red means the team was eliminated.
  • Blue means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race. This means that the team was not eliminated. The penalty on a non-elimination leg is that teams are forced to give up all their money and belongings, will not receive any money at the beginning of the next leg and are not allowed to collect any money until the leg actually begins for the team.
  • Green means the team won the Fast Forward clue.
  • A yellow > means that team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it.
  • *Leg 3 was double-length, with two Detours and two Roadblocks, shown over two episodes
  • + Ray & Yolanda had arrived 2nd, but they were assessed a 15 minute penalty for taking a bus instead of a train all the way to the Isthmos Train Station. BJ & Tyler were also assessed the same 15 minute penalty, but it did not affect their placement. Lake & Michelle should have also received the same penalty, but as it didn't affect their placement as last, it was not assessed.

Race locations

Leg 1 (United States → Brazil)

The first Detour of the Race was Motorhead or Rotorhead. In Motorhead, teams had to travel to a motorcycle shop and assemble a motorcycle, using an assembled motorcycle as a model. In Rotorhead, teams had to travel to an airport and locate one of three buildings in a São Paulo city guide, then travel by helicopter to that building to find a clue hidden within.

Leg 2 (Brazil)

In the first Roadblock of the race, racers had to climb a fire escape of the Edificio Copan and rappel down the building. The Detour choices were Press It or Climb It. The former required teams to press sugar cane and distill its juice to make 500 mL of ethanol to fuel their cars. In the latter task, each racer used an ascender to climb up a waterfall.

Leg 3 (Brazil → Russia → Germany)

The Roadblock from the first half of the leg required one racer to dive off of a 10-meter diving platform into a pool below and retrieve an underwater clue. The Detour for this half of the leg, Scour It or Scrub It, had teams search for 10 clues among 1500 Russian nesting dolls, or thoroughly clean a Russian public trolley bus, respectively. The Roadblock from the second half of the leg required one racer to find a Travelocity gnome hidden under giant gnome hats and feet in a field for their next clue. The Detour for the second half of the leg, Break It or Slap It, required teams either to break "stunt bottles" over each others' heads in search of a message printed on the back of the label or learn and perform a local folk dance.

Leg 4 (Germany → Italy)

In the Detour for this leg, Foundry or Laundry, teams chose between carrying a 110 lb. iron-cast bell and delivering it to a church or searching through over 2400 articles of laundry for one of sixteen articles of clothing bearing a red and yellow tag. At the Segesta Amphiteater was the first of two Yields in the race. Lake & Michelle yielded Danielle & Dani which ultimately sealed their fate. For the Roadblock, teams had to assemble a Greek statue; racers were not told that there were two extra pieces that did not belong.

Leg 5 (Italy)

In the Detour for this leg, teams chose between Big Fish or Little Fish. In Big Fish, each team member must carry a 17-kg swordfish one-third of a mile and deliver them to a specific fish market vendor. In Little Fish, teams must travel by foot to the same fish market and sell 4 kg of a small fish. All teams, except for Fran and Barry, chose "Big Fish". For the Roadblock, one team member must join a game of "kayak polo" and score a goal.

Leg 6 (Italy → Greece)

For this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to complete a 240 foot bungee jump. In the Detour for this leg, teams chose between Herculean Effort or It's All Greek To Me. In Herculean Effort, teams had to compete in three ancient Olympic events (discus throw, javelin throw and wrestling). In It's All Greek To Me, teams had to find nine artifacts with Greek letters, translate them to English letters and unscramble them to form the name of a location on a Greek map. The first of only two Fast Forwards on the Race was to break plates and find a little clue flag that was baked into one plate. The Fast Forward was won by Eric and Jeremy.

Leg 7 (Greece → Oman)

This leg's Detour was Camel or Watchtower. In Camel, teams had to lift a camel into a pickup truck using a winch, and drive it a short distance to receive their next clue. In Watchtower, teams had to search among three towers for scrolls encased in silver. After they found a scroll, they had to deliver it to a silversmith. The Roadblock was to dig any of 117 sand dunes to find one of 6 shuwas, Omani underground ovens. Inside it was a woven pouch with a meal of lamb, which they would have for dinner.

Leg 8 (Oman → Australia)

The Detour for this leg of the race offered teams the choice of Sand or Sea. In Sand, teams had to drag 40 branches 126 yards to a marked sand dune, an activity known as "brushing the beach," which helps prevent erosion. In Sea, teams searched among 50 underwater crayfish traps for those with live crayfish; each team member had to retrieve one crayfish. This leg's Roadblock involved searching a section of Fremantle Prison for a flashlight and batteries, then searching a network of underground wet and dry tunnels for a clue.
