"My Day Off" is the ninth episode of the American situation comedy Scrubs. It originally aired as Episode 9 of Season 1 on November 20, 2001.

Plot
J.D. develops appendicitis, and has to spend Thanksgiving as a patient at Sacred Heart Hospital. During his treatment, he is cared for by Elliot and Turk. J.D. complains that Elliot's bedside manner is too cold, forcing her to re-examine how she treats patients. J.D. also has misgivings about being operated on by Turk, who J.D. still sees as an immature college student, and requests to be operated on by someone else. However, when J.D.'s condition worsens, Turk is the surgeon on-call, and so performs the operation. J.D. realises that Turk is indeed a skilled surgeon, and apologizes to him for doubting him.

Meanwhile, Dr. Cox and Dr. Kelso fight for the attention of Dr. Benson, a retired Chief of Medicine at Sacred Heart Hospital who has returned to the hospital as a patient. Kelso makes a decision that almost costs Dr. Benson his life. However, Dr. Benson ends up chiding Dr. Cox for refusing to "play the game," and for sabotaging his own career.

The episode ends with the begrudging Sacred Heart family enjoying a makeshift Thanksgiving over drinks in the local bar.

Cultural references
*When J.D. says "there was the Niña..." he is talking about the ships on which Christopher Columbus sailed to America (the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria).

Trivia
When the surgery scene is shown, Turk is doing the incision on J.D.'s left side. Later, when he checks on J.D., the incision is shown on the right side.

Continuity
When Turk says, "the only thing J.D. is scare of is sharks, and he has this weird thing with pennies" is a reference to the pilot episode when the Janitor found a penny in a broken door and started his terrorization of J.D.

The episode also starts the pun on Elliot's cold hands and even colder bedside manner, this has been revisited numerous times the latest being in season 7.

Featured music
* "Fuzzy" by The Incredible Moses Leroy
* "Hooch" by Everything
* "The Magician" by Bobby McCall & Dontrell Mayfield
