"Give It 2 Me"
Song
B-sideGive It 2 Me (House Lovers Edit) / US 7" white vinyl

"Give It 2 Me" is the second single by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her eleventh studio album, Hard Candy.[2] It was released in mid 2008 by Warner Bros. Records, and the video features American singer-songwriter Pharrell, who co-wrote and co-produced the song.[3] The song was performed during the Hard Candy Promo Tour and then the Sticky & Sweet Tour as the closing song of the show. Williams made a guest appearance and co-performed the song with Madonna on October 11 2008 at her concert in New York.[4]

Critical reception

USA Today's Elysa Gardner called the song "thumping" and "breathless", naming it one of the standout tracks of the album.[5] Rolling Stone described "Give It 2 Me" as a "thumpy self-empowerment anthem".[6] About.com listed it as one of the top tracks on Hard Candy.[7] Bloomberg complimented it on its "insidious beats".[8] Slant Magazine called it "a little careerism on the dance floor".[9]

Chart performance

In the absence of a physical single release, "Give It 2 Me" entered the UK Singles Chart at number seventy-three on May 4, 2008, and climbed to number sixty.[10] On June 15, it re-entered the UK Singles Chart at number thirty-six peaking at number seven and bounced up and down the top 40 in its chart run. In Australia, the song debuted at number twenty-three on July 27, 2008; it fell the following week to twenty-six and climbed one spot to twenty-five and did the same the following week, climbing one more spot to twenty-four. It fell the following week to thirty-one and after three weeks it fell completly off the chart. In the Australian Physical Singles chart, "Give It 2 Me" charted much higher that the official Singles, charting number #8 on the Physical Chart.

In the U.S., before its official release as a single, it debuted and peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number fifty-seven, the highest debut of the week, and it dropped off the chart the following week; it did, however, return to the Pop 100 chart after a five week absence. Upon its release to radio, it gained airplay on few pop radio stations, yet the single failed to re-chart on the Hot 100. The physical single charted high on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart, hence limited airplay was the reason this single failed to re-chart. It topped the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay chart, extending Madonna's streak of having the most consecutive number-ones on this chart to six, and it made history by reaching the top spot in three weeks. She is now tied with Rihanna for the most Dance Airplay hits. It also topped the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and is her thirty-ninth number-one single on this chart, a record for an artist and nowhere close for anyone to break.

In the US in mid August 2008, "Give It 2 Me" was paired with "4 Minutes" and both songs were released on a 7" record. Both 7"s are pressed on white vinyl and the discs are presented in a gatefold sleeve; each side of the sleeve is each of the songs official covers.

Before it was officially released in Canada, it debuted at number eight and became the week's highest debut. In Norway, the track reached number sixteen on the singles chart on downloads alone, before an official single release.[11] It reached number six on the Italian singles chart on downloads alone and peaked at number three. In the Netherlands, the single rose to number one in its fourth week on the chart on July 18, 2008 and spent six weeks at number one. On August 21, it debuted at number one on Spain's singles chart. The song became Madonna's second number one song on the Romanian Singles Chart from the album, and her fifth number one per total.

Madonna and Pharell in the music video

The music video was filmed on April 3, 2008 in London, co-directed by fashion photographer Tom Munro and Nathan Rissman. Pharrell's part of the video was used during the performances of "Give It 2 Me" on the Hard Candy promotional tour. The full video was leaked on the video-sharing website YouTube on May 31, but was later removed by Warner Bros. The video was officially released on Yahoo!, AOL and iTunes stores worldwide on June 4, and premiered on Channel 4 in the UK on June 5. A teaser for the video was released on June 6.[12] It premiered on MTV's TRL in the U.S. on June 10. The video featured Madonna and Pharrell singing in various backdrops while singing to the camera. Madonna's retro-chic look in the video was inspired by her photosession with Tom Munro for Elle magazine.

The video starts with Madonna doing stretches infront of a wall-mirror in a short dress ala "Hung Up" as noises of traffic from the street is heard. Then the song starts and Madonna gyrates to the music. At the first verse Madonna is shown in a chic black dress with only stockings on the leg and retro makeup. As the bridge builds up, she is shown in front of a white screen dancing, also wearing a French cap and on a sofa. On the chorus, she dances and plays with an archlight and fondles with a long black fur. The second verse shows Madonna and Pharell trading video shots with Pharell wearing sunglasses in some of them. At the "Get stupid" interlude Pharell is shown getting stupid while dragging a Hermes Birkin bag along the floor behind Madonna. The video continues through Madonna's dancings through these scenes and ends with Madonna finally getting tired and falls asleep on the studio floor.
