"Poker Face"
Song

"Poker Face" is a song by American singer-songwriter Lady GaGa from her debut album, The Fame. Produced by RedOne, it was released as the album's second single. The track has reached number one in Australia, Canada and the New Zealand. Without an official radio release in the U.S., the song has already received strong radio rotation on pop radio. The song started to be rotated on z100 in January.

Critical reception

Daniel Incognito of Sputnikmusic reviewed the song saying "Pokerface shares the rest of the album's (The Fame) lively personality – the synths being anything but level. The vocal texture in the breakdown takes an eccentric turn, but strangely has a nice alluring quality to it".[1] Times Online in a review for The Fame said that "Poker Face" was one of the finest moments of the album with its love-as-card-game cheek.[2]

Chart performance

"Poker Face" peaked at number one on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and has stayed there for 8 weeks so far. It is the second single by Lady GaGa to do so after "Just Dance" which, however, spent just one week at the summit.[3][4]

In Canada, the song debuted at number 41 on the Canadian Hot 100. As it began to receive more radio airplay, it reached the top ten. On the chart dated December 13, 2008, "Poker Face" ascended to number one where it has now spent six consecutive weeks so far (one more week than "Just Dance", her first five-week chart-topper).[5] The song also managed to top the Digital Downloads chart.[6]

In America, the song debuted on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart on the week of October 18, 2008 at number 25.[7] On the week of January 3, 2009, the single entered the Billboard Hot 100 at 92 and moved up to 81 the following week. The song has reached a peak of 72 for the issue dated January 24, 2009.[8] The song also debuted on the Pop 100 at number 61 and moved to a peak of 55.[9] The song has started moving up the Hot Dance Club Play chart and currently stands at #21 becoming the power pick of the week ending January 17, 2009.[10] The next week it moved to a new peak of 17.

In New Zealand, "Poker Face" debuted at number 21 on October 6, 2008. In its sixth week, it topped the chart and was certified platinum. It has been number-one for ten weeks as of now. That's the longest stay at number one since 2005 when Crazy Frog's "Axel F" spent 11 non-consecutive weeks at number one.[11]

In Finland the song entered the chart at number 19 and climed to the top on the second week of January.[12]

Music video

Lady GaGa in "Poker Face" music video

The music video of "Poker Face" was directed by Ray Kay[13] and premiered on October 22, 2008. The music video takes place by a pool, as well as in a mansion. The video begins with Lady GaGa emerging out of the pool with a shiny masquerade mask. She throws the mask aside and the song begins with a facial shot of GaGa singing it. Featured in the video are scenes of GaGa in a mansion, playing strip poker, on a sofa with a man, and dancing poolside with her dancers in a turquoise leotard. The video also features two harlequin great danes and several white mannequins on her swimming pool deck who are supposedly playing her servants. The video shows GaGa in her trademark Pop Is In sunglasses while sitting beside the pool. Also in the video Gossip Girl star, Chace Crawford is featured as her lover.[14] The video ends with the head shot of GaGa singing the Mum-mum-mum-ma hook.
