The Land Before Time is an animated film, produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, directed by Don Bluth, with a soundtrack composed by James Horner. It was originally released in movie theatres in 1988 by Universal Pictures. The extended 20th anniversary theatrical re-release is planned for 2008.

The story involves an orphaned longneck named Littlefoot who has to flee from a drought-caused famine to search for the Great Valley, an area which has been spared devastation and where dinosaurs can survive. One of the most dramatic moments in the movie is the on-screen death of Littlefoot's mother from injuries suffered while battling a Tyrannosaurus.

Along the way he makes friends with four other young dinosaurs: Cera, a Triceratops; Ducky, a Saurolophus; Petrie, a pterodactyl (although he actually resembles a tailless, a miniature Pteranodon); and Spike, a Stegosaurus, in order to overcome the challenges on their way.

Sequels

The movie generated many direct-to-video sequels, but the reaction to these have not always been favourable, with most fans of the original expressing annoyance at the superflous addition of musical numbers (something even Disney had abandoned as of late) and more opaque lessons of morality, reflecting the opinion the series had jumped the shark. One Rotten Tomatoes reviewer wrote that The Land Before Time was suffering from the "excessive sequel syndrome," with films that were "pure formula." [1]

The Land Before Time XII: The Day of the Flyers and the TV series, planning to be scheduled for Cartoon Network and soon be released on DVD from Universal Studios, are planned for 2007 releases.

Movies

The following is a complete list of the films in the series:

Two other films were sent out, which were just collections of songs from the other movies and had no cohensive plot.

Trivia

  • Judith Barsi, who did the voice for Ducky, was murdered by her father before the movie was released.
  • It was George Lucas's idea to make Cera a girl triceratops.
  • Steven Spielberg and George Lucas originally wanted the film to have no dialogue, like the sequence in Fantasia, Rite of Spring. But, to make the film appealing to children, they abandoned this idea, and got actors and actresses to do the voices.
  • The role of Ducky was Judith Barsi's favorite of her own film roles.
  • In the second film, they use the word "sun" instead of "Great Circle".
  • The deleted scenes were in the theatrical trailer, but were not in the original theatrical version.
  • This film was rated G in the United States.
  • When this film was released in Canada, it was rated G, but was rated PG in some cities of Canada.
  • This film contains violence because Littlefoot's mother was killed by a meat-eating Sharptooth.
  • Although the 1st film did not earn a single Oscar nomination, The 1st film grossed over $40 million dollars in USA, competing with the Disney film, "Oliver and Company" and over $70 million in Worldwide gross. Through the years since the 1st one came out, It's audience grew and became an animation classic

Goofs

  • Audio/visual unsynchronized: Littlefoot's lips don't move when he says "Cera, you're back!" while pushing the boulder on the Sharptooth.

Lingo

Due to the film being set in a presumably pre-Linnaean time, the movie's characters tend to refer to various animals not by scientific terminology but rather by names noting those animals' conspicuous characteristics. A list at some of the terms used throughout the series.
