Overview

Sanderson was founded in 1968 and is one of the newer secondary schools in Wake County. It is named after a former student or faculty member. Located in the northern suburbs of Raleigh, Sanderson has a reputation of being an average, ordinary public high school. Student performance is almost always mediocre compared to other schools in the district and only a quarter of its educators are National Board inductees. 86 percent of its educators are fully licenced[1]. Like all traditional high schools in Wake County, Sanderson runs on a block schedule. School hours are 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, with four 90-minute interactive classroom sessions.

As of 2006, the diversity of Sanderson students and teachers has changed drastically. More new students are being enrolled, most of which are out-of-state transplants. The majority of educators at Sanderson have been teaching for many years and are highly experienced; however, the school has also attracted several interns and neophyte educators.

The majority of the students from public housing in and around downtown are bussed to Sanderson High School.

Sanderson's mascot is the Greek knight, called the Spartan.

Organizations

To ensure that all students have an opportunity to develop future careers, Sanderson offers a variety of student clubs, including a handful of natinal organizations as well as a series of local organizations. Some of the national organizations Sanderson offers are Academy of Finance, Air Force JROTC, Amnesty International, DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, Key Club, National Honor Society, PETA, Science Olympiad, and SADD.

Student publications are Grains of Sand, the literary magazine; Lakinikos, the yearbook; and Sandscript, the newspaper.
