(秋道一族, Akimichi Ichizoku, "Akimichi family") The Akimichi clan is one of the four noble clans of Konohagakure no Sato. They are able to convert calories into chakra, which they then use in their Hiden jutsu, Baika no Jutsu and its various related jutsu.

The Akimichi clan seems to have a special relationship with the Nara family and Yamanaka family. For two generations, members of these three families have formed an "InoShikaChō trio". Named after the first part of the names of the members. The Akimichi members are the Chō in InoShikaChō.

Trivia

The name "Akimichi" means "the road in the season of autumn". "Aki" means "autumn", which is a time of harvest. "Michi" means street, which is where vendors sell food.
"Ino", "Shika" and "Chō" are the names of three cards needed for a highly prized trick of "Inoshikachō" in the Hanafuda.

Affectionately called Chiyo-baa-sama (チヨバア様) by the Sunagakure villagers. She and her brother Ebizō are highly revered in Suna and are known as the Go-Kyōdai (御姉弟, honorific form of "Siblings"). She is a poison expert and used her skills during the third Ninja war, only to be countered numerous times by Tsunade's medical expertise. This is why she holds a grudge towards "Ano Namekuji-musume" (あのナメクジ娘, "That slug-girl") as she calls Tsunade. She is the grandmother of Akasuna no Sasori. Her son was the enemy of Hatake Kakashi's father Hatake Sakumo, whom she still holds a grudge to. It is unknown if this son is also the father of Sasori. It was Chiyo who trapped Shukaku in Gaara under orders of the Yondaime Kazekage.

Chiyo uses ten puppets created by the first Kugutsu no Jutsu (Puppet Technique) user, Monzaemon.

After an extended battle between Chiyo and Sakura against Sasori at the end of which all three people have been fatally injured, Chiyo sacrifices her life force to save Sakura's life, using a jutsu she originally developed for Sasori, "to give life to a lifeless puppet." Because Sakura was not completely dead, Chiyo was still alive at that point, since she was not forced to give up her entire lifeforce to restore Sakura. Later on though, she uses the same jutsu to bring back Gaara, thus using up her remaining life force.

Trivia

Chiyo is arguably the oldest character in the series. Though her current age is unknown, she has to be at least 80. Her grandson, Sasori, left Sunagakure more then 20 years ago, already being a legendary puppetmaker. This probably makes him about 40 years old. Assuming that both Chiyo and her son had their children at age 20, this brings Chiyo's age at 80+.

Favouring war over peace, Danzō has, in the past, opposed the Sandaime Hokage. He created the, now disbanded, ANBU Traning Department known as 'Ne' (根, "Root") and acted as its head. Danzō is the person who recommended that Sai be placed in Team Kakashi. Despite Danzō's apparent support for the Hokage and Konoha, Tsunade doesn't trust him; this is apparently well founded, as Danzo has given Sai a secret mission that Tsunade is unaware of. Recently in the manga it was revealed that he sent Sai to contact Orochimaru and act as a subordinate for Orochimaru. What Danzo wants to tell Orochimaru is still unclear at the moment, though Yamato believes that Danzo is trying to crush Konoha with Orochimaru's help.

A cynical woman known for her amazing acting talent, she is extremely reluctant to return to the Snow Country, where she is from. It is revealed that she is Kazahana Koyuki, the true heir to the former daimyo of the country. The throne was taken from her father by her uncle when she was a child and she never returned, knowing she would be killed. Only her agent, her father's most loyal advisor, knows her real identity and attempts to trick her into returning to the Snow Country and reclaim the throne.

The first of the Hokage, the Shodai is the founder of Konohagakure. He is the older brother of the Nidaime, and the grandfather of Tsunade (5th Hokage). He saw the people of Konoha as a part of him, and put them first before anything. His spirit even now takes a firm root in Konoha.

It is revealed that Orochimaru used his DNA for his own genetic experiments, attempting to duplicate the First's Mokuton techniques and his (previously unknown) ability to control bijū. Only one of the sixty test subjects, Yamato, survived.

The Yondaime Hokage, also known as "The Yellow Flash of Konoha" (木ノ葉の黄色い閃光, Konoha no Kiiroi Senkō), was the brave Ninja who was responsible for sealing the Kyūbi no Yōko (Nine-tailed Demon Fox) inside Naruto. Some say he was the greatest ninja Konoha ever produced. He is remembered for his heroic acts through the monument which overshadows Konohagakure. Before he performed the seal, which would not only trap the Demon Fox, but also take his life away, he said that he did not want Naruto to be viewed as the container of a monster, but as a hero who saved the Leaf Village from annihilation (the demon fox's soul still lives inside Naruto). He was a student of Jiraiya, and later the sensei of Hatake Kakashi, Uchiha Obito, and Rin. Another speculation has been that he could be Naruto's father due to the blond hair and blue eyes they both possess and the similarities in their personalities as noted by Jiraiya. Also, during the confrontation between Uchiha Itachi and Hatake Kakashi, Itachi refers to Naruto as Yondaime's legacy.

Techniques that he created include Hiraishin no Jutsu, which allows him to essentially teleport with the use of a special seal, and Rasengan, a technique that does not rely on hand seals, but instead uses a concentration of spinning chakra that causes immense damage to its victim.

Trivia

The name "Inuzuka", meaning "house of dogs", belongs to a clan which was one of the most powerful in the Chiba prefecture in Japan during the Edo period. They were known as "dog warriors" and worshipped Inu ("Dog"), a deity representing the zodiac sign of the dog. The name "Inuzuka" also originates from Hakkenden, a novel about a dog samurai.
The (known) Inuzuka members are all named after a part of the body of a dog (nose, claw, fang), while their dogs are named after colors (red, gray, black).

Karura is the wife of the former Kazekage, and the mother of Gaara (And probably also the mother of Kankurō and Temari). Against her wishes, her husband had the spirit of a dead Sand priest imbued into her unborn son. She died while giving birth to Gaara because of Shukaku being sealed into Gaara. Before she died, she cursed Sunagakure, hoping her son would avenge her death and the horror she had been put through.

The name "Karura" is made up of three kanji. Ka (加) means "Addition" or "Include", Ru (琉) means "Lapis lazuli" and Ra (羅) comes from the word Ashura (阿修羅) "Fighting demon". The Japanese believe Lapis lazuli is a sacred stone in which the power of Buddha dwells. So the name Karura could be interpreted as meaning "Addition of (Buddha's) power to the demon". Which is exactly what Karura did, adding power to the demon inside of Gaara with her hatred.
Karura is the name of a man-bird deity of Japanese mythology similar to the Hindu Garuda.

The strongest Kazekage in the history of Sunagakure. He was kidnapped by an unknown enemy, but because of the outbreak of war Sunagakure gave up the search for him. His body was never found. However, during their fight, Sasori reveals to Chiyo and Haruno Sakura his favorite puppet, the Sandaime Kazekage, thus revealing he was the one who kidnapped, and killed, the Sandaime. The Sandaime had a special genetic trait that allowed him to turn the chakra he molded into magnetic forces. This ability allowed him to create his 'Satetsu,' based on the jutsu used by the previous host of Shukaku. It is, as of yet, unknown if this was a Kekkei Genkai, or wholly unique to the Sandaime, similar to the Shodai Hokage's ability to perform Mokuton Ninjutsu

The previous leader of Sunagakure (Hidden Sand). Kazekage translates to "Wind Shadow", though this is merely a title given to him because he is the leader of Sunagakure. The father of Sabaku no Gaara, Temari and Kankurō, it was his design that made Gaara what he is. With the military forces of Sunagakure being scaled down by the Daimyo (Warlord) of Kaze no Kuni (Land of Wind), the Kazekage realised that they must increase the quality of each Ninja to maintain a military force. As more time passed, the Daimyo started commissioning Konohagakure with request he should have been making to Sunagakure. On top of this, he began cutting back on Sunagakure's budget. The Kazekage realized that if he didn't act quickly, Sunagakure would be in danger of disappearing. So, joining with Otogakure, the Kazekage planned to attack Konohagakure in order to teach the Daimyo a lesson and to re-establish the Sunagakure's military force.

Things, however, definitely do not go as planned for him. Just before the Chūnin exam's third stage, where his attack is planned to take place, he is betrayed and assassinated by his ally, Orochimaru, who steals his identity. Ironically, the son whose life he made miserable, Gaara, becomes the new Kazekage in his place.

The grandson of the Sandaime Hokage, Konohamaru feels he is unacknowledged for that exact reason. Although he was still only in the Ninja Academy, he constantly attempted to surprise attack his grandfather so he can defeat him and acquire the acknowledgement of the Hokage name. Tutored by Ebisu, it is only through Uzumaki Naruto's influence that Konohamaru realized that there will be no shortcuts to becoming Hokage, that it is a dream that will take many years of hard work and discipline to realize. Konohamaru hangs out with two friends, named Udon and Moegi, who call themselves the "Konohamaru Corps". After the three-year time skip, the Konohamaru Corps have become Genin and are in the new team formed under Ebisu as their mentor and leader.

The name "Nara" is from the real city of Nara, Japan, and is a famous place for the number of deer ("Shika") that live there. The deer there are said to bow whenever they are given treats yet also said to be very aggressive.

Nawaki is the younger brother of Tsunade. He was eager to fight in the war when he became a Genin, because he wanted to protect his village. This was also the reason he wanted to become Hokage like his grandfather, the Shodai Hokage. Proud of her brother's determination, Tsunade gave him their grandfather's necklace. Unfortunately, Nawaki became the first victim of the necklace's curse, and died on the battlefield, being so mutilated that according to Orochimaru, Tsunade wouldn't have recognized him. After Nawaki's death Tsunade lobbied for adding a medic nin to each Ninja-team, so that the survival rate would go up.

A member of a now-defunct independent subdivision of the ANBU called 'Ne' (根, "Root"), Sai is the codename of a ninja about Naruto's age specialising in artistic ninjutsu and functioning as an undercover agent sent by Danzou to inflitrate Team 7 as Sasuke's replacement. His mission and its objective remains unknown, although Sai has claimed it's started in Chapter 294. While he did successfully become a part of Team 7, he has not quite managed to pull it off inconspicuously. His introduction to Naruto being an attack on him, Shikamaru and Chōji followed by an insult to Naruto's strength, questioning if he even has a penis; calling Sakura ugly later does not win him any points with her either.

Later, he tops it off by vehemently denouncing Sasuke using quite colorful language. With this, it earned him Naruto's rather emphatic flat-out refusal to accept him as a member of the team, insisting that Team 7's third member is still Sasuke, even when he's gone. Sai also earns a well-aimed power punch from Sakura for bad-mouthing Sasuke. As the story unfolds, Sai admits that he has a problem of showing his emotions (even when his brother died) because he is somehow devoid of his own emotion or thoughts. He values the completion of his ANBU mission more than the safety of his teammates, as shown during training with Naruto, as well as when he ignored Yamato's order to catch an unconscious Sakura who fell from a bridge in Chapter 293.

As far as fighting goes, Sai uses a scroll, brush and ink to draw animals which will jump out of the scroll and attack to his will. He can also use this method to produce a fully flight-capable bird, which he can ride. He also wields a short sword like weapon which he keeps on his back at all times.

After the fight between Kyūbi Naruto and Orochimaru ends, Sai confronts Orochimaru with a message from Danzō. The message prompts Orochimaru to leave with Kabuto, taking along Sai as his new subordinate. However, this event is not done so without witness, as Yamato spies the group's dealings before they leave.

As of the end of 298, Yamato discovers what is apparently his body hanging from a tree, dead.

One of the more talented members of the ANBU, Yamato is Hatake Kakashi's replacement as the leader of Team Kakashi while Kakashi is recovering from a previous mission. Because the mission team Kakashi will be going on isn't an ANBU mission, he is forbidden to wear his mask and has been assigned the codename 'Yamato'; his real name is unknown. Yamato was chosen as the leader of Team Kakashi because according to the Godaime Hokage, he had the best performance record in ANBU while serving under the Sandaime Hokage. He seems to have great respect for Kakashi, and even worked with him while Kakashi was in ANBU.

Yamato is able to use Mokuton Ninjutsu, which was previously thought to only be used by Shodai Hokage. It turns out that Yamato's abilities stem from an experiment done on him and 59 other children by Orochimaru. In this experiment, the DNA of the Shodai Hokage was forced into the children in an attempt to give them the First's ability in Mokuton jutsu, as well as an unquantified ability to "control bijū" (which Shodai himself apparently also possessed). Yamato is the only one of the children who survived.

Yamato is able to perform a jutsu that forcibly reverses a bijū transformation, and has used it on Naruto once.

Unlike Sai, Yamato seems to care greatly about his team members. He lets Sai, Naruto, and Sakura have some time to get to know each other a little better before the main mission.

Yashamaru was the younger brother of Karura, and thus the uncle of Gaara. He was ordered by the Yondaime Kazekage to assassinate Gaara, but the assassination ended in a desperate suicide mission and ultimately failed. Before he died he told Gaara that no one had ever really loved him, leaving Gaara even more of an emotional wreck then he already was.
