Reverted edit

I properly cited the reason for removing the content in the edit description. The section of the article is in no way controversial and doesn't warrant a talk page discussion. 24.52.248.111 (talk) 06:11, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Since I cannot verify the paragraph, why should I believe what I say is true? --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 06:33, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MILHIST Military Aviation questionnaire

This is a short questionaire I am conducting to give me an idea of what others would like the task force to achieve and their capabilities that might contribute positively to the task force. The four questions of this questionaire are:

  1. What are your strengths on Wikipedia?
  2. Which four military aviation articles would you like to see be promoted to at least GA?
  3. What detailed resources (books, journals, etc) about military aviation do you have access to? Please provide the publications' authors, titles and ISSNs/ISBNs.
  4. Which three military aviation articles are you wiling to provide assistance? This can be expansion, copyediting, reference formatting, etc.

Please reply by pasting the following below the previous user's comments before filling it out with specific examples for points 2 and 4.

Pleased to meet you, and thanks for contacting me for this valuable initiative! As I'm very busy currenmtly in "real life", it will take me some time to gather the details on the sources I have (they're in "long-term" storage and not at hand); maybe I'll have some time over the Xmas break. When do you need the full questionnaire responded, please? Regards,DPdH (talk) 06:11, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  1. My strengths
I have some deeper knowledge of aviation subjects relating to Finland, to a somewhat lesser degree I am also interested in German, Russian/Soviet and Nordic aviation subjects. I have also tried to follow up on new aircraft projects. I know several languages so I can also translate entire articles or paragraphs from other language wikipedias. I have been a wikipedian for quite a long time, and currently I am an administrator on enwp (I have also had oversight and admin rights on other language wp's). I used to work with smaller code-writing projects such as creating infoboxes and such but this has diminished due to time constraints.
  2. Articles I'd like to see the task force improve
Finnish Air Force and its aces
    Warsaw Pact air forces
Generally air force history from the cold war period, most articles have neglected sections on this time period
Editing many of the articles involving Italian aircraft. These have lots of information, but are in many cases poorly written (the same is rquired also of French Navy ships, but this is not of interest here).
  3. Sources which I have
Too many to mention, I have quite a lot of printed resources, but most are currently stored in Finland (I am spending 95% of my time in Norway and Germany due to my work)
I like to think that I also have skills for finding necessary information from different resources other than printed books (contacts, electronic references and snippets of information from available electronic publications etc)
  4. Articles I'm willing to provide assistance
I suspect that my future contributions will mostly involve Finnish Air Force-related subjects, as most of the avaition articles outside my scope (see question 1) now have reached a certain level of maturity. I am not sure I can devote so much time to the project that I could contribute to more to these in any significant manner. I do know what is expected from a new aircraft article, and if I stumble upon one that doesn't live up to the standards I will try to do the necessary work to improve it.

Hi Phil, Thanks for closing the Air raids on Japan ACR and nominating me for the A class medal. I should note however that I'm up for the A-Class medal with Oak Leaves as this would be the sixth time I've received this award (see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/Awards/ACR/Archive 2#Nick-D). A Reward for a great wikifier

The WikiLink Barnstar from Assassin's Creed. 468917876

I did what I had to do -- minimise the backlog. But since pretty much nobody wikified during the middle of the month, the magic number 19,000 wasn't reached. Nevertheless, we both did what we could, and that's the thing that counts. Thank you for the barnstar --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:02, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes We did our job, and I think we'll reach the magic number 19,000 in the next drive. Thanks again.--Assassin'S Creed (talk) 18:59, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The gender of ships

Hey - noticed the comments on the GAN for Tula. Ships are indeed normally she...except for Russian and German ships. The Russian/Soviet and German languages have their ships being masculine - they refer to them as "he". - The Bushranger One ping only 22:12, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. But after having looked at Bismarck class battleship and some Googling, I might have to ask you to produce a reference. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:38, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for butting in but the German articles for the Bismarck and Tirpitz both use die in the lead sentence, die is feminine, der is masculine and das is neutral (noting that we should not use WP articles as a reference). I speak German fairly well and can look in to it further if you like. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 01:57, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'd have to do some digging to find a reference - this is one of those things that "I've always known it, never bothered looking it up" - pretty sure I first learned it from Clancy (Red October of course, hardly a RS. ;) ) Can't recall where I saw the Germans using it but as a ship nut it stuck in my brain. I'll look around and see if I can find anything. - The Bushranger One ping only 02:25, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not changing it yet until Bushranger can produce a ref about Russian ships. @The Bushranger you seem to have a passion with Clancy novels, like me! @Numbus are you aware of MoS convention about the naming of Russian submarines and ships? I'm not sure whether to use "Tula (K-114)" or "K-114 Tula". --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 02:33, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Know nothing about Russian language but the Germans seem to use feminine, same as we do. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 02:58, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK then, since this is En.wikipedia, looks like I'll be sticking with she. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 03:02, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly.Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 03:04, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, I thought Bushranger wanted me to use she in Russian and German ship articles on En.wikipedia, until I read his opening comment again. :P --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 03:06, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Best to use feminine until RS'd otherwise - most non-Russian sources will use "she" anyway, and I doubt Captain Raimus will be popping up to yell at us about it. =P And yeah, Clancy's novels are good - up through Without Remorse, anyway. Rainbow Six was OK, but from The Bear and the Dragon onwards, the less said the better. (And the less said about the movie version of Sum of All Fears the better - Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan? What were they smoking?!) - The Bushranger One ping only 03:41, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Hunt for Red October is the best; all the others are alright. I'm reading Patriot Games ATM. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 03:44, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed - both with regards to the book, and the movie. Wish they'd made a movie of Cardinal though. - The Bushranger One ping only 03:48, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for copy editing the article. Happy new year too :) Commander (Ping me) 16:56, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help me out with the article. There is a problem with sorting. Commander (Ping me) 18:32, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you can make the "Batting", "Bowling" and "Fielding" sortable since they span more than one column each. I've encountered similar problems with List of Boeing 777 operators, but it's been solved. The best thing I can think of is to move the rows "Batting", "Bowling" and "Fielding" to the top, so "Inn", "NO", etc are on the second row. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 02:55, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No I'm able to sort that column. But it doesn't work properly. Check the fourth and fifth comment of User:The Rambling Man in the Peer review. Commander (Ping me) 08:47, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't totally get what "Suggest you force the en-dashes to sort before 0's in all columns." meanss? Maybe Rambling Man wanted to you convert all the zeros to en-dashes? --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 09:42, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Russian submarine K-114 Tula

The DYK project (nominate) 07:16, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Project collaboration

I may be interested. What Soviet/Russian sub articles did you have in mind?Федоров (talk) 04:17, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm currently compiling a list of sources (both offline and online) about the K-141 Kursk, the K-18 Karelia, and a number of X-class submarine (notably Oscar and Typhoon). Recently I've created Russian submarine K-114 Tula, which, although there aren't many English sources, I plan to take to MilHist A-class status. Since you've a valuable relationship with the Soviet/Russian naval leadership, I'd like to know if they're willing to provide any info on the operational aspects on these boats -- there's hardly any extensive and reliable documentation on the submarine branch of the Russian Navy. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 04:27, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just wanted to acknowledge your request Sp33dyphil. K-114 Tula looks fantastic as it is - it's a great article, but I will start hunting around for further sources. Search for Michael Holm, www.ww2.dk/new/vvs.htm (he's in Denmark). He has a whole site on the Soviet Armed Forces in English including histories of units. He appears to be working directly from original books published in Russia. His e-mail is on the site: would recommend you contact him. Buckshot06 (talk) 09:43, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your rely. I've had a look at the site, but there doesn't seem to be much information about the Tula, only a brief mention of "K-114". However, as per your suggestion, I have sent Michael an email asking for assistance on the subject. To be honest, I don't think there's anymore reliable information Tula operations during 1991–2000, so I think that article won't be getting any bigger. If I was to nominate it for MilHist A-class status now, what is your thought on it? --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 09:59, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Could you verify the sentence "During 1987–1988, the boat conducted seven patrols, including five in the Arctic, 17 combat duties, and firing of twelve missiles"? In the ref, it says, "In the period from 1987 to 1998, "Tula" performed 7 fighting services, including 5 in the high Arctic, 17 combat duty, 12 rockets fired from an underwater position. Passed 134,856 running miles and 77,245 of them in a submerged position." Now, compare that to the Google Translated version of ru:Тула (подводная лодка). Thanks --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 10:04, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'd invite you to check out http://www.ww2.dk/new/rvsn/Sources.htm. If Michael has access to all those books on the RSVN, think about the books that must be available in Russian on the Soviet Navy. Give him time though - he's quite slow to respond. Try also a Google Scholar search in Russian on the boat's name. Also check Eastview Press. As for A-class now, go ahead: it's completely A-Class standard. For the verification of the text, go to User:Ezhiki - my Russian is limited. Please tell him you came at my request, ask him to help, and tell him you're not worried about translation of exact technical terms; his military Russian/English translation knowledge is not full US/NATO standard. Have you e-mailed Pavel Podvig? Buckshot06 (talk) 10:09, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a quick look at the top results from Google Scholar, but all the information are already in the article. I'm afraid that, with much information, the article will fail, at MilHist ACR, on 1) comprehensiveness due to a lack of information, and 2) the reliability of current sources (WikiMapia and Deepstorm.ru). Do you have any suggestion on what I should do to address the latter? There simply isn't much choice. I've requested assistance from user Федоров, who has a relation with the Soviet and Russian Navies. I doubt if they'll disclose any operational data of their submarines, unlike the more liberal US Navy. All in all, Russian submarine K-114 Tula has just ran aground (hahaha), and I don't think nobody could help her. Kursk all over again ... --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 10:30, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you think it might fail a review, don't run it through one. Have a quiet word to a couple of the senior coordinators and ask them about what they think of Deepstorm.ru. Wikimapia indeed is out. However, short articles (like USS Kentucky (BB-66) have gone through FAC before; you should not fail on comprehensiveness; this is a Russian subject after all. Let me have a think also. Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 10:42, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see, "comprehensive" means all notable and available is included in the article -- if it doesn't exist, there's no need to piss in my pants over it. Cool --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 10:48, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You haven't mentioned the grounding in the article as far as I can see. Am I missing something or are you planning to add that? Buckshot06 (talk) 11:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Translation of Russian text

It is a fairly accurate translation, although somewhat abridged compared to the original (but only the secondary details have been abridged). Do you need me to translate the whole sentence, or is this confirmation enough for your purposes?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); January 4, 2012; 14:30 (UTC)

Please translate the whole sentence, particularly "7 боевых служб" and "17 боевых дежурств" -- I ran them through Google but I can't distinguish "seven military service" from "17 combat duty". Could you also check whether that Russian paragraph, which has existed from 27 June 2007, was a translation from http://wikimapia.org/20830035/K-114-Tula-Delta-IV-Class-Submarine-SSBN, or vice versa. Thanks --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:05, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the translation:
Also please note that Buckshot was right when he said that I am in no way a specialist in military terminology, but the above translation should be pretty close to the original meaning (and if anything sounds especially awkward, let me know, I can probably come up with an alternative term).
Regarding the Wikimapia passage, it seems indeed to be an attempt at the literal translation of the Russian text, so I would say that the Russian text was written first, especially considering that the text in Russian is well-written, while the passage on Wikimapia is horrible. However, I suspect the Russian passage in ru-wiki was lifted from some other Russian-language source (perhaps verbatim) without attribution, but that's just a hunch.
By the by, Wikimapia really shouldn't be used as a source for anything anyway, since it is just a wiki.
Does this answer your questions?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); January 5, 2012; 15:25 (UTC)
Thanks for your detailed answer. I was really tight on sources, so I used WikiMapia. If I was to remove it, I really don't know what other source to use. Once again, thanks for your contribution; I don't know where to go from here. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

copyedit of Second Transjordan

Hi, just noticed you are doing this copyedit but it was copyedited in November after being requested on 22.10.11 and a second copyedit of this article was not requested by me.

I think it may be a mix up because a copy edit of the First Transjordan attack on Amman (1918) was requested on 17.10.11 but has not been done. Would you be able to do the First Transjordan instead? --Rskp (talk) 01:28, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think I was the copyeditor of First Transjordan attack on Amman (1918). And are you sure Second Transjordan attack on Shunet Nimrin and Es Salt (1918) had been copyedited? --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 01:29, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding 1st Transjordan, sorry, my mistake; another foolproof method failure! :) But regarding the 2nd Transjordan it was my understanding the work of Elinruby between 29 November and 2 December was a copyedit.--Rskp (talk) 04:17, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll look into it anyway, but can you at least remove it from the GOCE request page? --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 04:55, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If Elinruby was a copyeditor and did a copyedit, wouldn't Elinruby have already done that?--Rskp (talk) 01:42, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, if you're happy with it, then you can revert my edits. Good luck with the GA. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 01:47, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Still a bit confused. I did wonder at the time, if Elinruby was in the copyeditors' guild. I haven't looked at your work, but suspect it may be superior to Elinruby's. If you don't mind, I would prefer for you to continue, as I would like the article to be as good as it can be.--Rskp (talk) 02:07, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No way is my copyedit superior, I'm only a beginner! I'm not sure what your take is, but I can't compete with an adult! Yeah sure, I can have a look at it, but don't expect anything from me. If you're not satisfied with my work, you can always revert it, because 1) as I said, I have no expertise in copy-editing, but nobody started out as experts, and 2) I don't have a lot of background knowledge of the subject. It's your call --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 02:12, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I've just had a look at the work you have done and clearly the article will be improved if you were to continue. Don't worry, the subject is not at all well known, but I have hopes.--Rskp (talk) 02:33, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I can't believe it, but someone actually came after you prodded the article Critical inventory and put it up for an AfD. I wish I could yell at this user more... Funnyfarmofdoom (talk to me) 01:40, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I don't know what got into that editor's mind. However, we (and yourself as well, since you didn't object the PROD) both think that it's violated WP:OR, it doesn't really matter what steps had been taken, as long as a reasonable conclusion is reached. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 02:35, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The reason I noticed it was because I was going to prod2 it ;) Funnyfarmofdoom (talk to me) 02:41, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh oh oh, I thought you were the article's creator, silly me! This guy should be spanked and be sent to the naughty corner. I'm participating in the AfD now. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 02:45, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier

Hi you may have noticed that the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier has passed a GA review. Belated thanks for your assistance with the copy edit. Jim Sweeney (talk) 11:01, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No no no no, I must give credit where credit is due -- you're the one who deserves all the credit. I only played a minor role in its GA promotion. Thank you for your effort, and I hope you can bring this article to FA. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 11:08, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Copy-edit of Molde FK

Hi there, and thank you for your copy-edit of Molde FK. I just have a couple of questions regarding your edits:

  • "Its home matches are played at Aker Stadion, which has a maximum capacity now is 11,800 attendants." is a mistake right? I can't that sentance to make any sense.
  • Done  Done
  • You added a "lead to short" tag on the article, do you have any suggestions for what info I could add to the lead now that you've read the whole article?

Again, thank you and have a nice day. Mentoz86 (talk) 15:53, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

I couldn't think of a better way to phrase that, sorry :¬) I thought the GOCE coordinator roles were for a six month period rather than a year? Chaosdruid (talk) 22:25, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah that's right, as per WP:GOCE/COORD. Why did you ask? --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:27, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

All right, back then I thought it was 12 months :P --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 23:08, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, I wasn't sure if you realised, so thought it best I ask - I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be successful in June either though ;¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 23:32, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for starting the copy editing on the article. I didn't think anyone would get around to that for at least another month. Be sure to contact me when you think it's ready to be renominated for GA status again. RG (talk) 01:29, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't finished with it. I like to copy-edit, then take a break, and come back during the next few days to finish it off. It helps if you have a "strategic distance" when you copy-edit, so you can spot mistakes easily. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 01:39, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, here is a preliminary list of everything I'd like you to do, and it includes requests from above.
  • Check that there are is no copy-right violation.
  • When done, please wikify, or link, words that are relevant in the article. The first paragraph of "History" might be a good place to start.
  • Add references to everything.
  • Convert the aim section from quote to prose.
  • How come there's a separate section for "Notable presidents since 1904"? I suggest merging it with the table

Great one, thanks for your guidance CBethanH (talk) 23:08, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There isn't much difference between Australian and British English, except for a drop in sophistication in normal talking and several different words. But, the latter do not apply to meteorology, so I wouldn't/can't change anything in the article to suit your perceived need. I would've thought meteorological words constitute their own language, so I'd be more worried about ensuring such words, instead of Aus Eng, are present in the article. By the way, the article is great -- hope to see a star on it --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 22:26, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that's the whole point of my request for a second opinion. Look, I don't know what the rush is about, but I think you're being slightly unreasonable here. After all, there are GANs that haven't received any attention after more than four weeks? I ask that you be patient, as I'm do all I can. In the meantime, why don't you review another GAN? Quick question

Hey Sp33dy. You seem to be the go-to guy for the aviation project, and I was wondering if you think the article Valentich disappearance falls under the project's scope (it's essentially an aircraft disappearance/disaster). I'm thinking of polishing it up for GA and A-Class reviews in the future and I'd like to know if it belongs to a project with serious members, since sourcing is likely to be contentious and pretty out-there, and it's probably going to need stern assessing in light of that. And congrats on T2, by the way! Probably my third favourite 90s film with Robert Patrick playing a bad guy opposite a huge action star (that maybe doesn't say much). GRAPPLE X 06:33, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it should be included in the Project, as there are various documents about the crash itself, the mention of UFOs (although that's not technically aviation-related), and also, just because the flight didn't have any flight numbers doesn't translate to exclusion from the Project. In addition, the RAAF sent a plane to look for the wreck, plus the main subject was a pilot. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 06:42, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, good. I'll stick the project banner on its talk page now. Thanks! GRAPPLE X 06:45, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And, about the T2, it's about my favourite film ever (I think I already said this), as it combined the arguably hottest (in all senses of the word!) Hollywood star at the time, science fiction and spectacular special effects (and a memorable quote, maybe two) to create the most culturally-significant movie of all time. Geez, the franchise would still be kicking ass if Jim Cameron didn't leave it for Titanic and Avatar. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 06:48, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I dunno, looking at Jim's output, every film he makes seems to be a notch worse than the last—The Terminator is quite perfect, Aliens is great, The Abyss was almost great (someone could probably edit out all of the alien nonsense and turn it into a genuinely good political thriller instead), and T2 is pretty good. Beyond that we've got three more films that really should just never have happened. (I don't know how Piranha 2 fits into this though). I think Ed Furlong and the slap-in-the-face retconning of the first film are what annoy me about T2 but I could gladly sit and watch it at a moment's notice and still enjoy it. GRAPPLE X 07:02, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You don't like Eddie? Well, I think including a kid helped make the movie a hit -- I don't think it's a coincidence regarding the lack of under 18s in the other three Terminator films and the fact that they haven't received quite as much ratings as T2. No offense to Stan Winston and Industrial Light & Magic, their contribution was awesome, WITH A CAPITAL A! Anway, I've talked to Betty Logan and he/she thinks that the article can get to FA provided that some info from the books about the film to be included in the article. Looks like we've hit the Great Wall. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 07:10, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I managed to find a rake of print sources for a neo-noir flop featuring half of the Miami Vice cast (currently at FAC), I'd be very surprised if there didn't exist similar material for a film as huge as T2. I've finished my uni course for the year so I'm going to be using the library there for my own purposes during the wikicup, I'll have a look to see if I can turn anything up next time I drop in. JSTOR's journal records might also turn something up—you felt the release information was scant, so maybe archives of Billboard would have information on home media or the like; and I can imagine the change in Hamilton's character from onlooker to badass has probably merited an article or two of feminist criticism. It's out there, no doubt, but finding it is the issue. GRAPPLE X 07:17, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm currently busy with another article; the ref gathering depends on you now, whether you want to improve the article or win the WikiCup. --Sp33dyphil ©hatontributions 09:19, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also eurgh Furlong. Check out Animal Factory and American History X for more good films he goes out of his way to ruin. GRAPPLE X 07:18, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again

Hi Phil. I'm just curious since you never wrote back to me and it's been a few weeks, did you finish your copyediting of the article I was working on?
