Meteorological observer means a person authorised by the Director of Meteorology to make or record meteorological observations or a person approved by the Authority for that purpose[1]A Meteorological observer, called Meteorological Watch or synoptic expert, is a person who is responsible for accurate observation, rapid measurement, timely collection and recording, and timely submission of meteorological parameters and information and various atmospheric phenomena to the Meteorological Center.[2] [3] [4] [5] https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00431672.2010.503840?mobileUi=0&journalCode=vwws20

There are four types of weather observations: surface, upper air, radar, and satellite.[6]

Meteorological observations

Meteorological observations play a key role in many flood, drought, environmental and water resources applications. Whilst rainfall observations are most widely used, other parameters of interest include air temperatures, humidity and wind speeds.[7] The main measurement techniques include raingauges, weather stations and weather radar, with satellite precipitation estimates playing an important role in data-sparse regions.[8] Surface aviation weather observations (METARs) are a compilation of elements of the current weather at individual ground stations across the World. The network is made up of government and privately contracted facilities that provide continuous up-to-date weather information. Automated weather sources, such as the Automated Weather Observing Systems (AWOS), Automated Surface Observing Systems (ASOS), as well as other automated facilities, also play a major role in the gathering of surface observations.[9][10] [11] Surface observations provide local weather conditions and other relevant information for a specific airport. This information includes the type of report, station identifier, date and time, modifier (as required), wind, visibility, runway visual range (RVR), weather phenomena, sky condition, temperature/dew point, altimeter reading, and applicable remarks. The information gathered for the surface observation may be from a person, an automated station, or an automated station that is updated or enhanced by a weather observer. In any form, the surface observation provides valuable information about individual airports around the country. Although the reports cover only a small radius, the pilot can generate a good picture of the weather over a wide area when many reporting stations are viewed together.[12] [13]

Meteorological Observer Tasks

Weather Observer in IRAN Country

As a weather observer, your responsibilities are to collect, record, and analyze weather conditions. In this role, you may research information about your observations, predict changes in prevailing conditions, and help decide whether or not to recommend sending out weather warnings. Many weather observers specialize in particular areas, such as supporting the military or local news stations, and specialization can affect your future career options. Weather observation usually requires monitoring conditions at all times, so employers may ask you to work nights, weekends, or holidays as necessary. You may be asked to go out into poor weather to gather information, so the ability to work in the heat, cold, rain, wind, or other environmental conditions as necessary is essential to this job. [14] [15] [16] [17] [18]

Qualifications of weather observer

The primary qualifications for becoming a weather observer are a master's degree in a relevant field and certification from an organization like the American Meteorological Society. Some employers may accept applicants with a bachelor's degree and more extensive experience. Some weather observers use internships or similar experiences to practice observing the weather before applying for a full-time job in this field. Any history of fieldwork, such as recording the weather in remote areas, can increase the number of positions you qualify for. Fulfilling the duties of a weather observer requires excellent eyesight, attention to detail, and presentation skills. For certain positions, the ability to direct assistants or support staff is also helpful.[19]

Weather observer volunteer requires

Being a meteorologist is a difficult job. You have to have excellent communication skills, especially if you want to work in broadcasting. You must have strong math, science, and computer skills since you will use those on a daily basis. You will have to learn how to work in a team. [20] [21] Weather observer volunteer requires the following:

  • Dedication to public service
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to learn and perform daily duties
  • Willingness to working with meteorological tools and instruments
  • Interest in gathering information and visiting meteorological and rainfall stations

Satisfactory aspects

  • - Work inside and outside the office
  • - Challenge to make observations, exactly at the set time at the same time.

Required aspects

  • - Long working shifts and working hours when tools break down
  • - Boredom with daily chores
  • - Working in adverse weather conditions

Meteorological Watch Requirements

  • - Be reliable
  • - Work carefully and responsibly
  • - Have scientific knowledge.
  • - Willingness to do the usual things.

The salary of meteorologists

According to a report of The Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) which is the federal agency and tracks employment data.the median salary in 2016 for atmospheric scientists (including meteorologists) was $92,460. The median is the middle value in a range of sorted data. The BLS also notes that job growth for meteorologists from 2014 to 2024 is expected to be 9% faster than average and that the best prospects will be in the private sector. when I was a meteorologist student (eons ago), I think most students hoped to work as a forecaster for the National Weather Service or on TV. I now tell my students to be more versatile in thinking about where they can work given the robust science, math, computational, GIS, analytical and other skills gained in a good meteorology curriculum. Yes, federal meteorologist and broadcast jobs are still out there. In fact, recent stories have documented staff shortages at National Weather Service offices, which suggests there is possible job growth in that sector. However, it is clear to me (and has been for several years) that the private sector is where significant growth is happening. This should not be surprising if you think about everything that weather and climate impacts: aviation, insurance, energy, agriculture, commodities, policy and so forth. Further, new laws and profit opportunities are driving established companies and start-ups into the weather market.[28]

  • Average Salary for a Weather Observer in America is $59,595 per year. Weather Observers in America make an average salary of $59,595 per year or $29 per hour. The top 10 percent makes over $108,000 per year, while the bottom 10 percent under $32,000 per year.[29]
  • The average Weather Observer salary in Canada is $46,527 per year or $23.86 per hour. Entry level positions start at $26,325 per year while most experienced workers make up to $50,700 per year.[30]
  • The average observer surface weather gross salary in Yanbu'al Bahr, Saudi Arabia is 200,310 SAR[31]
  • weather observer salary in south africa. An entry level weather observer (1-3 years of experience) earns an average salary of R244,503. On the other end, a senior level weather observer (8+ years of experience) earns an average salary of R406,376.[32]
