Eknath Khadse (born 2 September 1952) is a politician and veteran leader of the Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra state.[15][12][16] He was a Member of Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra from Muktainagar constituency for six consecutive terms till 2019.[17] He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party from 1987 until his resignation in October 2020.[14][18][19]

Personal life

Eknath Khadse was born in Kothali village to Ganpat Khadse and Godavari bai Khadse in Muktainagar tehsil of Jalgaon district. His son, Nikhil Khadse, committed suicide on 1 May 2013.[20]He is of Leva cast.[21]His daughter-in-law Raksha Khadse is a member of the 16th Lok Sabha from the Raver constituency, serving her second term.[22] On November 2020 and February 2021 various newspapers reported that Khadse found COVID-19 positive.He was admitted to Bombay hospital ,Mumbai[23][24] [25] [26]

Political career

Khadse lost his first election when he contested in Grampanchayat elections in Kothadi village. Later he became sarpanch of Kothadi village in 1984.he remained Sarpanch of Kothadi from 1984 to 1987.[27] [28] In 1989, he was elected as member of the Maharashtra legislative assembly (MLA) for Muktainagar constituency.

Khadse entered in active politics as a BJP worker in the 1980s and helped the party BJP establish its base in north Maharashtra[29] hailing from Leva community, Khadse had positioned himself as an OBC leader.[30]

He handled both finance and irrigation portfolios in the 1995–1999 Maharashtra state government led by the Shiv Sena–BJP alliance.He was in the Manohar Joshi's cabinet as minister.After Joshi's resignation as chief minister of Maharashtra he took oath as minister when Narayan Rane got the seat of Chief minister.[31] On 13 December 2005 Eknath Khadse was suspended for six months from Maharashtra state assembly's lower house due to making derogatory remarks against the then speaker Babasaheb Kupekar and Deputy speaker Pramod Shende in their chambers.[32][33] Khadse served as the leader of the opposition from November 2009 to October 2014.[34]

He announced breakup of long historic Shivsena-BJP alliance before 2014 assembly election and BJP decided to contest that election alone without Shivsena.[35]

In 2014, He was one of the names considered for the post of Chief Minister of Maharashtra,He was aspire to be Chief minister of Maharashtra.[36] [29][37] but Devendra Fadanvis was ultimately chosen for the post.[38][39].He held more than dozen portfolios during 2014-2016 time frame.Among these many high-profile ministries some are State excise , Revenue and Agricultural.[40] [41]He was defacto number two in Fadnavis's cabinet.[42] On 3 June 2016, Khadse resigned as Revenue Minister following allegations of corruption and misuse of office.[43] Since then he was sidelined by BJP and ignored by central leadership.[44] [45]

For 2019 Maharashtra assembly polls, BJP dropped Eknath Khdase's name from candidate's list.[46] Khadse blamed internal party politics, specifically Devendra Fadnavis and Girish Mahajan, for denial of a ticket.[47][48] Instead the party offered ticket to his daughter Rohini Khadse-Khevalkar. She lost a closely contested election by 1987 votes against Shiv sena's Chandrakant Nimba Patil.[49][50]

He quit BJP in October 2020 and joined NCP.[18]

Controversies

Khadse was involved in controversies even before 2016 corruption charges. He first courted controversy when he advised farmers to pay their electricity bills instead of splurging money on cellphones. TV news channels and print media criticized him for wastage 10,000 lit. of water for the creation of temporary helipad in his tour of drought suffering Latur that time.[51]

Accusations of nepotism

Khadse's tendencies to forward the interests of his kin did not go down well with the rank and file of his party [BJP]. Many members harboured resentment over how he promoted his family members to important posts in Jalgaon. His daughter-in-law Raksha Khadse is an MP from Jalgaon, while his daughter Rohini Khewalkar was made director of the district cooperative bank and wife Mandakini became the director of Mahanand, the state milk cooperative federation.[51]

Corruption charges and resignation

Khadse resigned on 3 June 2016 after allegations of impropriety surfaced against him in a land deal in Pune. Realtor Hemant Gavande leveled charges of land grabbing against him, alleging that Khadse had misused his position as the State Revenue Minister to illegally execute sales deeds for a three-acre (1.2 ha) industrial plot at Bhosari in Pune District in the names of his wife and son-in-law.Eknath Khadse is accused of buying land at Bhosari MIDC at very low price as compared to then market price by using his influence and ministry.[52] Former Aam Aadmi Party politician and activist Anjali Damania gone on hunger strike and demanded inquiry against Eknath Khadse.[53]She broke her hunger strike after then CM Devendra Fadnavis assured her that he will going to do proper investigation against Pune land deal and other corruption accusations of Khadse.[54]She field PILs against Khadse.In the retaliation Khadse field case against her at Muktainagar accusing her maligning his image by submitting false affidavits at Bombay High court and seek her arrest.[55]Khadse accused Damania of making false and defamatory statements against him and served defamation notice.[56][57]

He faced investigation of Zoting commission on this land deal case.Zoting commission was led Justice (Retd) Dinkar Zoting appointed by Fmr CM Devendra Fadnavis.Opposition accused him for misuse of office as Revenue minister.[58]Khadse has denied the allegations and termed them as a conspiracy against him hatched by political rivals.[59] In 2017 Anti Corruption Bureau registered case against Khadse , his son-in-law Girish Choudhary and wife Manda Khadse on orders of Bombay High Court.[60]

In May 2018, Khadse claimed a clean chit from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the Maharashtra Police, saying the ACB wasn't able to prove the allegations.[61][62]Later Khadse said that the land at Pune was purchased by his wife Manda Khadse and he nothing to do with it.[63]

On 30 December 2020 Enforcement Directorate summoned him on this land deal case to interrogate and ask to provide documents[64][65]. Meanwhile ED recorded statements of many steakholders related to this alleged land grabbing matter.[66]
