7 Cups (formerly called 7 Cups of Tea) is a website (also available in an app) which provides online therapy and free support to people experiencing emotional distress by connecting them with trained listeners.[1][2] The listener, trained in active listening, interacts with the person seeking help via an anonymous and confidential chat.[3] Members must be 13 to 17 on the teenage side and 18+ for the adult side. Listeners must be 15 or over. In 2018 they lost their California partnership due to the continuing issues of teen sexual abuse over ups. The admin refused to admit that they didn’t warn those on the site about these issues and let them slide under the radar. Someone who was a past listener that got banned for calling them out was able to get the California partnership terminated due to these reasons. [4]
The website derives its name from the eponymous poem by the 9th century Chinese poet Lu Tong. It is a Y Combinator startup founded by psychologist Glen Moriarty in July 2013.[1]
