András Kappanyos (born 10 October 1962)[1] is a Hungarian literary historian, literary translator and university professor. His contribution to the field of culture sciences centers around modernity, the linguistic realisations of the avant-garde as in the oeuvre of Lajos Kassák, James Joyce and T.S. Eliot. He analyzes the linguistic tradition of modernity in the course of the development of the genre of poems from Dryden to contemporary pop poetry. He is trailblazer in cultural translation studies in Hungary, both a skilled analyst and a sensitive translator of literary texts. Kappanyos is the scientific advisor and vice director of the Institute for Literary Studies of the Eötvös Lóránd Research Network (previoisly the Institute for Literary Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences), head of department of the Section of Modern Hungarian Literature, also the editor in chief of Literatura literary magazine. He is professor at the Institute of Hungarian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Miskolc and the head of the Cultural Translation Studies program in the Doctoral School of Literary Studies at the University of Miskolc. In 2015-16 he was visiting professor of the Ranki Chair at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Career

Kappanyos participated László Lator’s legendary seminars at ELTE, where he could practice literary translation in a fellowship with mastrely support. His career as lecturer in literary history started in 1990 at the University of Pécs at Ernő Kulcsár Szabó’s department. He could spend a year at Oxford University as a postgraduate auditor with a Soros grant, he earned his PhD in 1996 in the English Literature programme of Eötvös Lóránd University. He is a habilitated academic doctor, he defended his dissertation on translation studies in 2015.
