Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, BatesENVR209. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Amager Bakke, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 18:56, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your username

[edit]

Hi, please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, service, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Foobar Museum of Art". However, you are permitted to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87".

However, my first suspicion does not seem to make sense geographically. You can completely ignore the username concern if "Bates" is a person's name, not part of a company/organization name. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 19:43, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a moment to respond

[edit]

Hi BatesENVR209, thank you for your contributions. Please take a moment to explain your connection to the companies/organizations that you write about, if a connection exists, or to explicitly deny such a connection below. There seems to be a focus on "affordable housing", "sustainable energy" and similar topics, which is generally fine, but seems to be done excessively and with a lack of neutrality and balance at the moment. A draft has been declined for being too promotional, edits to Amager Bakke have been reverted twice for reading like marketing catalogue text, the latest addition to Mission District, San Francisco appears to be focused on introducing "Plaza 16 Coalition" into the article without a reliable source, and one draft is still pending review. A highly unusual amount of energy is being invested into this, given that the age of your account is 21 hours so far. It seems reasonable to ask if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for your edits. I will do so below with a standard message. Please, even if you consider all of these messages to be completely irrelevant to what you do, take a moment to respond at the bottom of your talk page. Wikipedia is a community project, and it can only work correctly if people respond to each other's concerns.

Hello BatesENVR209. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially egregious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat SEO.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists, and if it does not, from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:BatesENVR209. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=BatesENVR209|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 00:04, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As previously advised, your edits give the impression you have a financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. You were asked to cease editing until you responded by either stating that you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits, or by complying with the mandatory requirements under the Wikimedia Terms of Use that you disclose your employer, client and affiliation. Again, you can post such a disclosure on your user page at User:BatesENVR209, and the template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=BatesENVR209|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. Please respond before making any other edits to Wikipedia. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:26, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You still have not responded or taken action to the inquiry regarding your appearance as an undisclosed paid editor. If you make any additional edits without complying you may be blocked from editing. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:55, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your additions to articles

[edit]

Hi, thank you for your additions to articles such as Congestion pricing and Transportation in New York City. These edits are much appreciated. However, I have a few comments about your revisions:

  • When possible, please try to put your new information in the more specific page, if it exists. For instance, your paragraphs about congestion pricing in San Francisco should go to San Francisco congestion pricing, and your additions about NYC bikes' green waves should go to Cycling in New York City. I have already done these.
  • When you're adding paragraphs about a narrow subject, you don't need to include excessive details of the broader topic. For example, the effects of a green-wave traffic light policy should not go into an article about transportation or cycling in NYC. Just stick to the facts for the more specific topics, such as NYC cycling, and add the broad overviews to the pages about the broader subjects, such as the green wave article.
  • Please note that for date formats, you can't use Month/Day/Year format (e.g. 11/4/19) as it goes against MOS:DATEFORMAT. Instead spell out the month, day and year, e.g. November 4, 2019, or use an ISO 8601 date format, e.g. 2019-11-04.
  • Also note that words like "recently" and "in the past ___ years" are also likely to become outdated in quite a short time per WP:DATED, so we want to stay away from that.
  • Please don't mark major additions as minor edits, as it is considered deceptive.
  • Also, please ensure you're putting everything in the right sections. Your info about car ownership in the New York City article doesn't belong in the bike lane sections for example.

Otherwise, your edits are appreciated, keep up the good work. epicgenius (talk) 00:52, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article I-275 Transformation Proposal in the Tampa Bay Area has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Violates WP:NOTNEWS and WP:GNG. Additionally, it reads like a copypaste move from a newspaper.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Ways to improve Masterplan Beira 2035

[edit]

Hello, BatesENVR209,

Thank you for creating Masterplan Beira 2035.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

Thank you for your new article on Masterplan Beira 2035. Note that it is currently an "Orphan" meaning that no other Wikipedia articles link TO it. This makes the article tough to find for interested readers. See WP:DE-ORPHAN for pointers. Finding ways to connect this article to those for the city or Beira and country of Mozambique would be an obvious solution.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Doomsdayer520}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Mission Action Plan 2020 moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Mission Action Plan 2020, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Green Roofs in Seattle

[edit]

On average, Seattle experiences 152 days of rainfall per year.[1] With this extensive amount of rain, there comes a lot of negative effects to water quality and ecosystems. Specifically, one outcome is the lack of control of the polluted stormwater runoff, resulting in raw sewage flowing into Seattle's rivers and harbors. This runoff, along with the help of impervious surfaces, has a serious impact on marine and human life. In response to this, Seattle has begun introducing a green infrastructure alternative: green roofs. This solution takes advantage of unused space above man made buildings that become partially or completely covered with vegetation or a growing medium. These green roofs can come in a variety of different ways, some are garden-like while others contain grasses and drought tolerant plants.[2] Green roofs essentially help reduce and retain water runoff, improve air quality, urban heat island mitigation and increase habitats for various species.[3] They also provide various other advantages such as protecting roofs from sun damage and the insulation of buildings.[4] The goal of instituting green infrastructure is to increase infiltration and evapotranspiration through deep rooted plants and pervious pavement while limiting the amount of water entering the sewer system. While Seattle has only introduced this alternative over 1/10 of 1 percent overall, city leaders are looking to expand it city wide.[5]

Not every building throughout Seattle has successfully mastered the green roof solution. Without the proper maintenance and knowledge of the proper vegetation, places like King County International Airport, the Seattle Justice Center and Seattle City Hall are struggling to reap the benefits of such alternative.[6] However, if done correctly, green roofs can make a large impact on stormwater runoff. Union Stables is a prime example of how this solution provides positive impacts on the environment. With the addition of renovations in 2015 and other efficiency upgrades, the building has a green roof that contributes to the overall 70 percent reduction in energy use.[7]

Your further additions to articles

[edit]

Hello. I've noticed you editing several articles over the past week or so, adding text about urban planning efforts and their effects on communities. Unfortunately, a lot of your additions sound like essays, rather than having the neutral point of view that is required on Wikipedia.

For instance, on Brooklyn Bridge Park (which has been assessed by the community as a good article), I had to trim a large section of text you added. You added two paragraphs of text about the Hills at piers 3 and 4, and the effort is appreciated. However, not only are they redundant, they're also essay-like:

  • You added It was built from surplus of building materials from various bridge projects in New York City. Your addition was not only more vague than the existing text, but also conflated two separate actions. The paragraph above says The granite terrace features salvaged granite blocks within planted areas, surrounded by trees. The granite was salvaged from reconstruction work on the Roosevelt Island Bridge and Willis Avenue Bridge. [...] Additionally, the Pier 3 hill was formed with salvaged material from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's East Side Access tunneling project.
  • You added However, instead of actually addressing the issue of noise and pollution, one can argue that the Hill merely makes it seem to tourists that these issues that folks who live in Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo regurarly deal with do not actually exist. There is no reliable source to address the claim that the park was intended to alleviate noise and pollution in the first place.
  • You added Additionally, the Hill between Piers 3 and 4 can be seen as a symbol of other unforseen effects of the Park to local residents of Vinegar Hill, Dumbo and Brooklyn Heights. This text is subjective, and not supported by any reliable sources.
  • You added places such as Empire Stores are owned by outside investors, and thus the local residents do not neccesarily enjoy the benefits that this new shopping center gives. This text is not related to Pier 3 at all, but to Empire Stores. Also, there needs to be a reliable source for the claim that outside investment is correlated to residents' enjoyment of the shops.

In the future, please be careful to write in a neutral tone and to support claims with reliable sources. See Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought for why we cannot have this type of text. Epicgenius (talk) 23:01, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
