In early May 2023, Volodomyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, visited Finland and the Netherlands, with a visit to Germany expected. During his visits, Zelenskyy met with the president of Finland, Sauli Niinistö,[1] and visited the International Criminal Court, meeting with its president, Piotr Hofmański.[2][3]
Background
On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War.[4][5][6] Zelenskyy has made a number of international trips since the beginning of the invasion, including to the United States in 2022,[7] and the United Kingdom in 2023.[8]
Visit to Europe
Nordic summit in Finland
On 3 May, during a "Nordic summit" in Helsinki, Zelenskyy met with the president of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, as well as the prime ministers of Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.[9][10]
Visit to the International Criminal Court
On 4 May, Zelenskyy visited the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, meeting with its leadership.[11][12] The court has previously issued arrest warrants for the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and his Children's Commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova.[13][14]
