Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a 2023 American science fiction action film based on Hasbro's Transformers toy line, and primarily influenced by the Beast Wars storyline. The film is the seventh installment in the Transformers film series. Serving as both a standalone sequel to Bumblebee (2018) and prequel to the 2007 film,[3] the film was directed by Steven Caple Jr. from a screenplay by Joby Harold, Darnell Metayer, Josh Peters, Erich Hoeber, and Jon Hoeber.[4] It stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, as well as the voice talents of Ron Perlman, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, Liza Koshy, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Pete Davidson, Colman Domingo, Cristo Fernández, Tongayi Chirisa, and returning franchise regulars Peter Cullen, John DiMaggio, and David Sobolov.

Following the critical and commercial success of Bumblebee, Paramount and Hasbro announced a sequel in early 2019. In November 2020, Caple was hired as director for the film. By 2021, Ramos and Fishback were cast in the lead human roles, and details for the film were revealed that summer in a virtual event held by Paramount. Michael Bay, who directed the first five live-action Transformers films and produced Bumblebee, once again serves as producer.[5][6] Principal photography took place from June to October 2021, with filming locations including Los Angeles, Peru, Montreal, and New York City.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts had its world premiere at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on May 27, 2023, and is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on June 9, 2023, by Paramount Pictures.

Plot

The dark god, Unicron nears the Maximal homeworld and sends down Scourge and his minions to steal technology before he devours the planet. Apelinq, the leader of the Maximals and asks Primal and the others to use the Transwarp Key to escape. He decides to stay behind and fend off Scourge allowing them to escape. He names Primal the new leader of the Maximals. Scourge kills Apelinq while the other Maximals escape through a transwarp portal to prehistoric Earth.

In 1994 Brooklyn, Noah, an ex-military electronics expert, is struggling to look for a job to support his family. His brother has a blood disease, and they can't afford the treatment. Elena is an intern at a museum and artifact researcher. Elena notices a bird sculpture with a Maximal symbol and bizarre markings recovered from an auction, she breaks it, and inside is a Transwarp key that activates and emits an energy signature that's detected by the Transformers. At this time, Noah was desperate for cash, so he decides to take up Reek's offer to steal rich people's cars and sell them. After breaking into Mirage, he's forced to team up with him. Optimus Prime notices the transwarp signature and puts a call out to all the Autobots to assemble.

Noah and Mirage start to bond. When Optimus arrives, he is annoyed that Mirage has brought back a human. Arcee scans Noah's face, reads his bio, and notes that he's an ex-soldier. Optimus discovers that Autobots need the Transwarp Key to get back to Cybertron. They organize a museum robbery. So Mirage volunteers Noah. Noah sneaks in and grab the Key for them. The Terrorcons enter the city following the Transwarp Keys signature. At the museum, The Terrorcons attack, Scourge unleashes two Freezers to chase them while the Autobots come in to engage the Terrorcons. Noah and Elena manage to run out of the museum and evade the Freezers. Scourge kills Bumblebee and is about to kill Prime, when Airazor swoops in and helps fend off the Terrorcons. They decide to retreat because they already have the Key.

Optimus and the gang follow Airazor to figure out what's going on. Airazor explains that she is a Maximal, a time traveling race of Transformers trying to stop Unicron. Optimus knows of Unicron. Airazor notes that Scourge is a herald of Unicron. Here, it is revealed that Scourge only has half of the Key because the Maximals broke it into two to keep it safe. Elena discovers the other half of the Key must be in Peru because the same symbols on the bird statue were only ever recorded on a temple in Peru. The Autobots are now going to go to Peru, and Noah insists on coming along. They then set off to Peru on Stratosphere, an autobot who transforms into a cargo plane. In Peru, they meet up with Wheeljack, who helps track down the temple entrance with Elena's coordinates. There is a huge parade/celebration going on, and Noah and Elene blend into the crowd.

They Autobots enter the temple as Scourge and the Terrorcons arrive, they discover that the other half of the Transwarp Key is no longer there. It had been moved. A terrorcon drone called a Freezer attacks Noah and Elena, and they run deeper into the caverns. The Autobots spring into action, and so do the Terrorcons. There is a huge battle on the road and a rematch between Prime and Scourge. Nightbird and Battletrap fight Arcee, Wheeljack, and Mirage. They then emerge out of a cave in the jungle. Airazor blasts the bridge to prevent Scourge and the other Terrorcons from following. Scourge corrupts Airazor with a weapon. The Maximals find the Autobots and Airazor comes in to defuse the situation and introduce the other Maximals. Primal says that he's named after Optimus himself and that it's an honor to meet him. Primal and the others explain that they have the other half of the Transwarp Key. He also says that Maximals are an advanced race dedicated to the expansion of life throughout the universe, but now they're just staying on Earth to protect the life here and to protect the Transwarp Key. The Maximals lead them to a little village of humans, the descendants of the tribe of humans who have watched over the Maximals and have shared their culture with them.

The next day, Elena wakes up and sees Airazor under Scourge's corruption. She flies off, and Prime and Primal realize that Scourge and the other Terrorcons are coming. The Terrorcons arrive and manage to snatch the Transwarp Key while Airazor comes in and snatches up Elena. Primal jumps in to save her. Primal and Airazor fight and Primal is forced to kill her. Scourge has both halves of the key. He goes to the top of a volcano and combines the two. This creates a tower for Scourge to set the Key in, and it starts to open a portal in the sky for Unicron to come in. From the walls of the tower spawn a ton of Terrorcon drones. The Autobots and Maximals will fight the Terrorcons while the humans will sneak in through the tiny access tunnels and go to the console in the middle of the tower to enter the code.

The Autobots and Maximals team up to fight the Terrorcons. During the battle, Bumblebee is resurrected and awakened. Mirage takes on Scourge to distract him, but Mirage gets punched aside and Noah gets grabbed by Scourge. Regardless, Mirage shields Noah from Scourge's cannon fire and transforms into an exosuit for him. Noah starts to take on Scourge but is obviously outmatched. Prime then comes in to fight Scourge together with Noah. Scourge once again overpowers Prime. Unicron starts coming to earth through the Transwarp portal. Stratosphere flies in overhead and Bumblebee jumps out. All this time, Elena was running from a Freezer, trying to get to the console, and entering the access code. Even though she manages to enter it, the console gets destroyed as Scourge and Prime fight. Unicron sends Predacon drones called Scorponoks to aid in the battle. Prime kills Scourge and prepares to destroy the Terrorcon tower. Noah and the others start to run away. Prime destroys the Transwarp Key and is nearly sucked into the portal. Noah uses his exosuit to save Optimus and Primal saves them both. Optimus Primal reveals that Unicron must have survived the portal collapse and they he could return. Prime claims that he isn't afraid of Unicron as he has gained an important ally. Noah goes and applies for a security job and Elena gets recognition for the temple discovery in Peru. During an interview, Noah is recruited by a man who knows how Noah helped save the world from Unicron. The man's business card says G.I. Joe.

In a mid-credits scene, Noah manages to repair Mirage.

In December 2018, when asked about the future of the Transformers franchise, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated that another big Transformers film "would be produced" and that it would be "different than the ones that we've done before." He described the process as more of an "evolution," saying that there is more freedom to create and what they can do with it. After the success of Bumblebee that year, he said that the series would make some changes in tone and style, inspired by the film.[25] Bumblebee director Travis Knight said his goal was to return to his animation studio, Laika, though he acknowledged that he has a few ideas for a sequel.[26] John Cena expressed interest in reprising his role in a sequel.[27] Writer Christina Hodson said that "[she] knows where [she wants] to go with the next one".[28] In late January 2019, a sequel was announced.[29] In March, di Bonaventura confirmed they were developing a script for a Bumblebee sequel.[30]

In January 2020, Paramount Pictures was reportedly working on two different Transformers films, one written by James Vanderbilt and another written by Joby Harold.[31] In November, Steven Caple Jr. was hired to direct Harold's script.[32] In February 2021, it was revealed that the film was going under the working title Transformers: Beast Alliance, hinting the introduction of characters from the Beast Wars franchise.[33] During a virtual event held by Paramount in June, di Bonaventura and Caple revealed the official title as Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (revealing to be both a Bumblebee sequel and Beast Wars film in one),[4] and confirming that it would feature the Maximals, the Predacons, and a new take on the Terrorcons faction.[34] The film's tone and action were heavily influenced by Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991).[35]

In an April 2023 interview, Di Bonaventura stated that the film's story will have a character arc for Optimus Prime prior to the 2007 film, akin to Bumblebee in his self-titled film.[36] In May, Caple said that the events of the 2007 film will be preserved, but also that the story would standalone and that "Ultimately, all you need to know is that they’re trying to get back to Cybertron."[3]

In April 2021, Anthony Ramos was cast for the lead role in the film.[37] Later that month, Dominique Fishback was cast opposite Ramos.[38] It was also revealed that Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters had been hired to rewrite Harold's screenplay.[38] Ultimately, Harold, Metayer, Peters, along with Erich and Jon Hoeber received screenplay credit, with Harold solely receiving story credit, while Ken Nolan, Tony Rettenmaier, Juel Taylor, and Vanderbilt received "additional literary material" credit off-screen.[39]

In June, actress Lauren Vélez revealed that she has a role in the sequel.[40] In the same month, Peter Cullen was confirmed to return as Optimus Prime for the film,[4] and Ron Perlman was announced to be reprising his role as Optimus Primal from the Power of the Primes web series a week later.[20] In July, rapper Tobe Nwigwe revealed that he had a role in the film, making his film debut.[41] In October 2022, Caple Jr. revealed that Michelle Yeoh and Pete Davidson will voice Airazor and Mirage, respectively, in the film.[17]

On December 1, 2022, additional members of the voice cast were announced, consisting of Peter Dinklage as the film's antagonist Scourge, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez as the female Terrorcon Nightbird, Liza Koshy as Arcee, who replaced voice actress Grey DeLisle from both Bumblebee and Revenge of the Fallen, Cristo Fernández as Wheeljack and voice actors John DiMaggio and David Sobolov from previous installments in dual roles for each actor.[10] DiMaggio voices both Stratosphere, an Autobot that originated from the toyline of Revenge of the Fallen and the Dark of the Moon video game from 2009 to 2011, and Transit, a Terrorcon that turns into a transit bus.[42] While Sobolov, being the sole cast member from the Beast Wars animated series,[43] voices both the Maximal Rhinox and the Terrorcon Battletrap.[10]

Caple revealed more members of the voice cast would be revealed in the coming months and expressed interest to bring Mahershala Ali to provide voice work.[44] On April 6, 2023, two months before the film's release, Tongayi Chirisa was announced to be voicing the Maximal Cheetor.[21] Cheetor's original voice actor, Ian James Corlett expressed his support to Chirisa in the role later in that same month.[45] On April 27, 2023, after the release of the second trailer, Colman Domingo was announced to be voicing Unicron.[24]

Filming

Principal photography began on June 7, 2021, in Los Angeles.[46] Filming also took place in parts of Peru such as Machu Picchu, Cusco, Tarapoto, San Martín[4] Montreal[47] and Brooklyn. On October 20, it was announced that filming had officially wrapped.[48]

Post-production

Rather than Industrial Light and Magic from the previous installments, the film's visual effects for the Transformers and Beast Wars characters were provided by Moving Picture Company and Weta FX.[49][50]

Music

Jongnic Bontemps provided the film's score, after previously working with Caple on his directorial debut, The Land. Bontemps is the third composer in the series after Steve Jablonsky and Dario Marianelli.[51] Recording sessions for the score began on March 27, 2023, at the Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Bros.[52] Jablonsky would later be involved in the film's score.[53] The score will reference tracks written by Jablonsky for Transformers (2007), namely "Arrival to Earth" and "No Sacrifice, No Victory", as well as Vince DiCola's "Unicron Medley" from The Transformers: The Movie (1986).[54]

To keep the authenticity of the film's setting, Caple confirmed tracks from the rap groups Wu-Tang Clan and A Tribe Called Quest would be featured.[55]

On May 18, 2023, the song On My Soul, composed by Tobe Nwigwe and Nas and featuring Jacob Banks, was released as a single from the film's soundtrack.[56]

Marketing

Paramount showed a sizzle reel of the film at their CinemaCon presentation in April 2022.[57]

A teaser trailer was released on December 1, 2022.[58] In an interview with BET, Caple discussed his decision to handpick the trailer's song, a remix of "Juicy" by The Notorious B.I.G. He explained it as the "perfect" choice since Notorious B.I.G.’s album "Ready to Die" was released in the 1990s, the time period the film is set in. He further said that Notorious B.I.G.’s "voice and what he meant in that era and time" captured much of what they were doing in the film.[59] The trailer garnered 238 million views on YouTube in its first 24 hours, more than any previous trailer in Paramount's history, and was in fourth place for that 24-hour cycle behind two Avengers: Endgame (2019) trailers and the first Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) trailer. In addition, the trailer also achieved 494 million global, cross-platform views in the first week, more than the view count of other film trailers released that week, such as those for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.[60]

A 30-second Porsche advertisement as a TV spot aired during Super Bowl LVII on February 12, 2023.[61] Optimus Prime was featured at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards on March 4, 2023, for the Lifetime Achievement Award.[62] Over a month later, Prime would then appear at Coachella 2023, presenting Tobe Nwigwe, one of the film's stars.[63]

The trailer was released on April 27, 2023.[64] It uses "Ruff Ryders' Anthem" by DMX. Many commentators highlighted the appearance of Scourge and Unicron as the main villains for the film, though some highlighted that the DMX song used was not released until 1998, four years after the film is set.[65][66]

Release

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts had its world premiere at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on May 27, 2023,[67][68] and is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on June 9, 2023, by Paramount Pictures. The film was delayed from its initial release date of June 24, 2022.[69]

Reception

Box office

On May 18, 2023, Variety forecasted the film to gross an estimated $68–70 million during its opening weekend in North America and noted strong ticket presales.[70][71]

Future

In February 2022, Paramount announced that it would be the first of three new installments in the Transformers series.[72][73]
