Acquisition by PVR Cinemas

SPI Cinemas was acquired by PVR Cinemas in August 2018.[1] In August 2019, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) New Delhi-branch approved the amalgamation of SPI Cinemas into PVR with effect from the appointed date of 17 August 2018, PVR said in the exchange filing.[2][3] With this acquisition, PVR became the largest multiplex operator in Tamil Nadu with 14 properties (including Puducherry) and more in the pipeline.[4][5][6] PVR is looking to expand further by opening more theatres in South Indian cities like Bengaluru, Mysore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Coimbatore and Vizag.[7] As of January 2021, integration and rebranding of all the acquired properties as PVR has started in a phased manner. Also all future projects will be branded as PVR. This includes the state of Tamil Nadu as well. The SPI cinemas website and mobile app is now a cloned version of PVR website/mobile app and the customers will be able to book movie tickets in both SPI and PVR Website/app. This was done with the intention of phasing out the SPI website and mobile app in the near future.[8][9] PVR has also launched its private movie screening experience[10] and its loyalty program 'PVR Privilege' across SPI properties.[11]

In February 2023, PVR merged with its rival INOX Leisure to create largest multiplex chain in India.[12] All the new properties opened after the merger will be branded as 'PVR Inox'.[13] The existing properties will continue to carry 'PVR' and 'Inox' branding respectively.[14] Before the Inox merger came into effect, PVR effectively rebranded all SPI properties except Sathyam, Escape and Palazzo as PVR Cinemas thereby getting rid of 'S2' and 'TheCinema' brands. Sathyam, Escape and Palazzo Cinemas were rebranded as 'PVR Sathyam', 'PVR Escape' and 'PVR Palazzo' respectively. PVR currently is in process of creating a unified rewards system in place of PVR Privilege that will be used across both PVR and Inox properties. A unified booking portal and app will also be launched soon in place of PVR, SPI and Inox websites and apps.
