Old comments

Where is this text taken from? - it seems widely copied. Lotsofissues 05:24, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

"the WEIRD culture"? Also, what about Lain Lain? Tiara (talk) 11:13, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Improvement suggestions.

I was just thinking to make some additional topics and perhaps remove some topics in order to improve this article. I was thinking maybe we could expand more on religion and the role it plays in shaping culture and society here. A bit of politics as well. Division between Bumiputras and non-bumiputras. Maybe the "Ethnic groups" section should be renamed and that we should not list out every ethnic groups in the country. Just a summary. And finally to lighten things up, we could expand more on cultural similarities of all Malaysians, modern culture, city life, rural life, etc. Any comments/suggestions welcomed. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 08:07, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Good idea on the light subsections, as long as it is sourced. I don't think too much politics would be a good idea, not so much "culture", though it is related. A relationship between the ethnic groups and their unique cultures is what I think the current section should be. That would work well with a cultural similarity section. Perhaps the ethnic part should focus on the unique bits, leaving the rest of the article to discuss the overall. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 10:49, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Sports

Added this subsection (hidden for now), thought it was relevant. Any suggestions for how it should look? I feel that the traditional sports should be expanded, a few sentences for each traditional sport would be good, with a summary of history, current events, and current importance. Maybe a paragraph on this. Another paragraph on modern sports, perhaps with a similar history and current status, although these could be less focused on as they are all elements of popular culture, while each traditional sport I feel has more to do with culture. A slight expansion of a third paragraph focusing on sport competitions with other countries may be good. I think the section shouldn't get much longer than 3 (maybe four) paragraphs, and should not be a detailed look at each sport. Hopefully that sort of thing could one day be on the main sports page, when that comes out of its terrible startclass. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 10:49, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Sounds fine. We could add one part briefly on the popular sports played by Malaysians in school, work, etc. (eg Badminton, Football). And then, like u said, professionally in the local and international stage. And trad. sports. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 03:31, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
I agree. Also, a section on dress would be good too. I started an article on baju kurung a while back; I'll see what can be done here.

Literature

Anyone have a source about Lat and its relevance to Malaysian literature? I find it hard to imagine a section on Malaysian literature without a mention of Lat, although that may just be my bias. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 15:20, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

Checking against GA criteria

GA review (see here for criteria)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
The prose is not well written. It suffers from poor word choice, clumsy phrasing, lack of distinction between single and plural words, and lack of consistency in word use.
    Examples:
  • Architecture exhibits various influences...
  • Malaysian music has a variety of origins, and is largely percussion.
  • Much early Malaysian literature was based on Indian epics, which remained unchanged even as Malays converted to Islam; this has expanded in recent decades.;
  • Cuisine is often divided along ethnic lines, but some mixtures have occurred, creating unique dishes.
  • Official holidays differ by state; the most widespread one is Hari Merdeka, which celebrates the independence of Malaya., but in the Holidays section we have The most widespread holiday is the "Hari Kebangsaan" (Independence Day), otherwise known as "Merdeka" (Freedom), Consistency is needed.
  • By definition of the Malaysian constitution, all Malays are Muslims. , this is contradicted by Although Islam is the official state religion, the Constitution of Malaysia guarantees freedom of religion.
  • The Malaysian government defined Malaysian culture through the issuance of the "1971 National Culture Policy". issuance?
  • Some cultural disputes exist between Malaysia and neighbouring countries, notably Indonesia. "notably is considered to be a weasel word.
  • Traditional Malaysian art was mainly centred around the crafts of carving, weaving, and silversmithing. Traditional art ranges from handwoven baskets from rural areas to the silverwork of the Malay courts. contradiction of tense.
  • A form of art called mak yong is strong in the Kelantan state, and incorporates dance and drama. However, older Malayan-Thai performing arts such as mak yong have declined in popularity due to their Hindu-Buddhist origin. Contradictory
  • Wayang kulit (shadow puppet theatre) has been popular in Malaysia for centuries. It takes two puppets carved and painted by hand, usually made with cow and buffalo skin. Very poor prose
  • Houses are built for tropical conditions, built on stilts with high roofs and large windows, allowing ventilation to cool down the house. Then a few lines later: Houses are built with ventilation in mind; they are often raised on timber stilts to increase air flow.
  • Hindus in Malaysia celebrate Diwali, the festival of light, then a few lines later: Similarly, the portmanteau Deepa Raya was coined when Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali coincided. consistency
  • Due to the lack of funding for smaller projects, a strong independent film movement has developed. Contradictory
These are just examples. The article needs copy-editing by someone with a good command of written English. It should never have been nominated in this poor state.
  1. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
    {http://go2travelmalaysia.com/} is a travel portal, not a WP:RS
{http://www.huffingtonpost.com/} is not regarded as a reliable source, but the report of Anwar's speech is probably OK.
  2. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  3. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  4. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  5. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
File:Monsopiad's Skulls.jpg doesn't appear to illustrate any specific point in the article.
  6. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
This article needs considerable work to make the grade. Get it properly copy-edited, then take to peer review. It has the makings of a good artcile, but it is not there or even near yet. Jezhotwells (talk) 19:48, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
