ServSafe

ServSafe is a certificate-granting training program offered by the National Restaurant Association (NRA). The various certificates are accredited by the American National Standards Institute.[1] In 2023, ServSafe received criticism for its monopoly on the food safety certification industry and course fees from restaurant workers going towards lobbying efforts by the NRA.

Certifications and programs

  • Certifications offered include Food Safety Manager, Food Handler, Alcohol, and Food Allergens. [2]
  • These certifications are considered valuable within the hospitality industry.
  • ServSafe also offers workplace training programs on sexual harassment, unconscious bias, and third-party food delivery.[3]

Controversy

  • New York Times Article on how money from ServSafe is spent on lobbying by the NRA.[4]
  • Further reporting was done by Washington Post.[5]
