Grammar

[edit]

This article has many grammatical errors; it appears to have been badly translated into English. Werdnawerdna (talk) 16:50, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sources

[edit]
These sources are in English, so they are more appropriate to cite in the English wiki article than the Korean language sources we currently have here. (Heroeswithmetaphors) talk 03:54, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Photo date

http://www.cbs.co.kr/nocut/show.asp?idx=388374 has a dec 06 article with the photo — what a shame someone like this could die this way --RisingSunWiki 16:34, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SKS2K6/ I corrected the article to neutralize it. I wanted the article to be a higher standard of quality. What is the reason you think my work is not neutral?Writerbjh (talk) 03:47, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Okay, so here's the thing: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia; as such, articles have to be neutrally worded and written and verifiable (with reliable sources). Your edits go against those policies.
You used various non-neutral/slanted terms like "quintessential", "sweetheart", and "national heartthrob", just in the lead. You have a sentence like "With that movie, he proved that she can act comedy as well as portray the frail characters she played on screen.", which is extremely slanted in her favour. Who said that she proved it? Who said that she can act comedy? Who said that she's good at portraying "frail characters"? Also, you say that "she successfully portrayed a courageous and comical ajumma". First, who said that she was successful? Second, what is an "ajumma"? (Well, I know that, because I'm Korean, but a majority of people reading the article won't.) Finally, along those lines, a paragraph like this: "For fans, she was an actress who kept on going. For friends, she was the "big sister" who led the so-called "Choi Jin-sil Association" which was a friendly group of close celebrities that included comedians Lee Young-ja, Jeong Sun-hee, models Hong Jin-kyung, Lee So-ra and actresses Choi Hwa-jung, Uhm Jung-hwa." is extremely problematic.
A lot of what you added in makes the page sound like a fansite or official biography. The material tends to flatter the actress more than anything else, and therefore it's not neutral.
I'm not trying to be harsh, and I really do apologize if this seems like it. But please read over the policies before you continue your edits. I'm not saying that the page was perfect before your edits; it still had its problems. And I'm really glad that you wish to add to the page, but please make sure that it follows the rules. Thanks in advance. SKS (talk) 04:21, 23 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cite

[edit]

You can cite like this:

{{cite web
 | url =
 | last =
 | first =
 | title =
 | work =
 | publisher =
 | date =
 | format =
 | doi =
 | accessdate = }}

or like this:

{{cite news
 | last =
 | first =
 | coauthors =
 | title =
 | newspaper =
 | location =
 | pages =
 | language =
 | publisher =
 | date =
 | url =
 | accessdate = }}

Currently, almost all of the citations are bare links, which is not good enough. We need to use proper citations style as above. (Heroeswithmetaphors) talk 03:35, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious inference about suicides

[edit]

The article claims a temporary 70% increase on the average number of suicides following her death. Even if this diversion is significant (i.e. if it's not normal for the suicide rate to fluctuate to a similar degree from month to month), this does not mean that it was "triggered" by Choi's suicide. Correlation does not imply causation, and we don't even have correlation here - just a single event. The Washington Post reference said something about "sympathetic suicides"... is there any evidence to back this up? Destynova (talk) 10:17, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Chosun Ilbo posted an article in January 2013 [1]reviewing the results of a study released by Statistics Korea, a Korean government agency that stated, "That the increase is often due to copycat suicides is also evidenced by the number of people who kill themselves in the same way as the celebrity. In the two months before Choi hanged herself in 2008, 437 and 477 did the same, accounting for about 40 percent of all suicides. But the figures jumped to 1,197 people or 66.2 percent in October, the month Choi killed herself, and 772 or 61.5 percent the following month." In other words, the issue is not simply an increase in the number of people committing suicide immediately after a celebrity suicide but an increase in the number of suicides in which the method of suicide matches that of the celebrity. In the matter of Choi's suicide, in the two months before her suicide, about 40% of the suicides were by hanging but in the two months after her suicide, over 60% of the reported suicides were by hanging.
