Infobox person

Per Template:Infobox person, If subject has only one notable mother and/or only one notable father, mother and father parameters may be used instead. It is therefore appropriate to use these parameters instead of the "parents" parameter. Thanks. Rowing007 (talk) 14:56, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Rowing007: Sorry for the late reply.
I disagree. Greta Thunberg's parents are both notable so the "parents" parameter should be used instead. --Thedarkknightli (talk) 23:04, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, well you're disagreeing with the template itself, because the example given on the template page is of Bill Gates, and it uses the "mother" and "father" parameters. Both of his parents are notable and have their own pages. And again, per the quoted passage from the template's page in my original message, there's nothing wrong with using mother and father parameters. If anything, it increases clarity, because it adds "(mother)" and "(father)", which may not always be obvious from the names alone, depending on nationality of the reader and of the subject. Rowing007 (talk) 00:41, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@SNUGGUMS: Could you please check this? Thanks! --Thedarkknightli (talk) 00:47, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure why you pinged me of all users, but I personally would always opt for the "parents" field over individual mom and dad parameters. It takes up less infobox space and there's no need for parentheticals when we've already established each person is a parent of someone. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 02:37, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What is your reason for reverting this edit? The comma after 'Iran' in this sentence was redundant and unnecessary, and should have been removed. -- Hamid Hassani (talk) 19:50, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Could you please explain it to me? My English isn't that good. Regards, Thedarkknightli (talk) 20:36, 25 March 2023 (UTC).[reply]
Hi. Ok. That was not a serial comma or 'a pair of commas' (..., ...,) for example like these serial commas in red color: I have been to Beijing, the capital of China, two times. Please check the examples and description(s) here at MOS:Comma. Regards, Hamid Hassani (talk) 21:17, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Handbook

We agree the article can be a mess. I'd like you to look up and find when reporters use the word following at the beginning of a sentence. How about never? They also never use a comma and the word in followed by a year at the end of a sentence. You may think you are following a manual of style; assuredly you are not. I propose we try to fix the Reeves article and stop reverting in a wholesale fashion. Infactinteresting (talk) 09:21, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Infactinteresting: You've reduced the article's readability instead of improving it. It doesn't matter how reporters write cuz this isn't a news report. Please self-revert. Thedarkknightli (talk) 11:59, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're nonsensical. I obviously will have to get intervention.Infactinteresting (talk) 03:41, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent editing history shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war; read about how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Urgeback (talkcontribs) 10:26, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Genre removal

Hi, i fail to see the point in your edit right here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tony_Bennett&diff=prev&oldid=1166424193 why remove this? How is anyone supposed to know now what type of music this singer makes? --FMSky (talk) 15:48, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Because I think the previous first sentence was too long. That's obviously one of many sloppy edits I've made. I admit the genres should definitely be included in the lead. Thedarkknightli (talk) 16:47, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Kindly explain your reasons for reverting this edit. The article clearly states that Connelly is of Irish and Norwegian descent on her paternal side, and Jewish descent on her mother's. Dr. Simon Hurt (talk) 15:35, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

According to WP:ETHNICRACECAT, “the ethnicity of grandparents (or other ancestors) is never defining and rarely notable”. Thedarkknightli (talk) 16:11, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is a bit baffling, as countless articles on Wikipedia have been using the same types of categories on the basis on ancestral lineage (e.g., grandparents, great-grandparents) for some time now. I also have to question why said categories exist in the first place if "descent" is just limited to parental nationality. FYI, Merriam-Webster describes descent as having "derivation from an ancestor", while Cambridge defines it as "the state or fact of being related to a particular person or group of people who lived in the past."
So, again, I find it quite odd that any guideline would limit these ethnic descent categories to parental nationality, which isn't even the same thing as ethnicity.
Thanks for your timely response, though. I'll have to research this some more and follow up with you at another time. Dr. Simon Hurt (talk) 00:38, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. Would you be willing to expand on the subject a bit more?
As per the content of the article, Connelly is of Irish and Norwegian descent through her father, correct? We also know that Connelly comes from a Jewish ethnic background by way of her mother; you recently added Category: American people of Jewish descent to reflect that.
Given that both of Connelly's parents derive their ethnicity through their own parents, i.e., Jennifer's maternal and paternal grandparents, why is it acceptable to include the aforementioned Jewish descent category and not the other two (or one, at the very least) pertaining to her father's ethnic background? Note: The category for American people of Irish descent explicitly states the following: "notable citizens of the United States of Irish ethnicity or with Irish ancestry, whether partial or full."
Please provide a thorough explanation as to why you feel it's necessary to omit only the categories pertaining to Connelly's paternal ethnic background.
Thank you. Dr. Simon Hurt (talk) 03:23, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Matt Smith

Most biography infoboxes have nationality and citizenship. Generally, use of either should be avoided when the country to which the subject belongs can be inferred from the country of birth, as specified with |birthplace=." So, according to you, because the infobox says he was born in "Northampton, England" we can infer his nationality as British! That's ridiculous - he could equally be German, French, American or Japanese, who just happened to be born in England. English is not a nationality any more than are Scottish or Welsh. Place of birth is not necessarilty a determinant of nationality. By way of example, no one born in the UAE to foreign parents can ever have UAE nationality and my wife, born in Harrow, Middlesex, is Irish! Emeraude (talk) 16:18, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Coco Lee

Hi Thedarkknightli, thank you for your contribution at Coco Lee. With regard to a recent revert, FYI, she is very famous and notable for her dancing and performance on stage, especially in Asia. Perhaps she is not as famous in the West, but there are still much reliable sources in English that described her as dancer or mentioned she’s notable for her dance. Many of them also described her as songwriter. Some of them include:

  • The Oxford Handbook of Dance and the Popular Screen, (p.275 -287, over ten pages analysing her performance on stage)
    • [1] “... her waist and hip movements are often compared with Jennifer Lopez ...”

Per MOS:ROLEBIO: “The lead sentence should describe the person as they are commonly described by reliable sources. The noteworthy position(s) or role(s) the person held should usually be stated in the opening paragraph.”

I cited MJ just because it’s a featured article (“...some of the best articles Wikipedia has to offer, as determined by Wikipedia's editors. They are used by editors as examples for writing other articles”), and I just wanted to illustrate that there’s no limit to the number of roles mentioned in the lead (as opposed to the hidden note previously added by someone else). Other examples include Mariah Carey, Jay Chou and Whitney Houston, all can have more than one role in the lead. And here is a popular video with her dancing on stage. Thanks. --Dustfreeworld (talk) 07:19, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Dustfreeworld, thanks for showing me those sources. I've added "songwriter" to the first sentence and the infobox (see [2]) cuz I'd discovered >10 reliable sources that describe Lee as such. As for "dancer", it has already been included in the infobox, which is enough imo. While I do oppose its inclusion in the first sentence, we can still summarize her dancing career later in the lead. November 2023

Hello! We, that is you, I, everyone, are all supposed to use article talk pages, not edit summaries to discuss reversals and article content. Reverting without discussion can be considered the start of an edit war. Your edit summary here is not enough to satisfy policy. Also, for example "Russian-born, American author" should be used to specifically identify that person's birth, but not to stress that he was an American with a substantial Russian past. "Russian-American" does not imply dual citizenship. It means that the person has considerable & relevant life history in both countries. Please be careful when using & changing these terms! Best wishes, SergeWoodzing (talk) 12:22, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Revert on Pacino's occupations re: MOS:BIO

I follow both Pacino and De Niro on my watchlist and noticed your revert of what should vs. shouldn't be listed.

Should we do the same for De Niro then, as was amended along with Pacino's infobox, with the exact same "film producer + film director" edit today? In his case, obviously A Bronx Tale was a big deal/fan favorite, while The Good Shepherd was a flop all around.

Just curious for your input. Thank you! --Cinemaniac86TalkStalk 00:43, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Complaint at WP:AN3

Hello Thedarkknightli. Please see my closure of the complaint you filed at WP:AN3 about Vanessa Bryant. In my view the claim of Filipino descent for Vanessa's mother may not have support from reliable sources. Can you look at this again and see what you think? The IP's edit summaries are legalistic but I am wondering if the IP may be correct about the underlying issue. Any needed discussion can occur at Talk:Vanessa Bryant. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 01:55, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Darknightli. I've reduced the article protection to semi, but the claim of her Filipino descent seems incorrect. Per WP:BLP it shouldn't be restored to the article without a reliable source. The Cupcake Magazine reference has disappeared from the web, perhaps due to a request from Bryant's representatives. See here for the closure of the edit warring report and notice the comments by the IP about Cupcake Magazine. EdJohnston (talk) 19:16, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. You reverted the edit abt parentage in the Michael Fassbender article from "German-Irish actor" to "German and Irish actor," invoking MOS:NATIONALITY. The examples provided in that guideline are about persons bosn in place A and then emigrating to B and making a new life there, i.e. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Peter Lorre. Fassbender, however, does not fall into that category, hence my edit. Fassbender has an Irish mother and a German father. Therefore, the appropriate notion should be Irish-German (or German-Irish). Why would we use "and" in such cases? From what I can recall, the practice in Wikipedia is the equivalent of "Irish-German." Remarks? -The Gnome (talk) 11:14, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @The Gnome, Fassbender identifies as Irish and holds German citizenship so I thought it was fine to say "German and Irish". Hyphenated terms should generally be avoided when we describe someone's nationality imo. However, I admit discussion is definitely needed so feel free to restore your edit before we reach a consensus.
Regards, Thedarkknightli (talk) 12:09, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. I don't think we can avoid, nor should we, the hyphen: Italian-American, Greek-American, and so on. (Well, the hyphen was exiled altogether once but that was for a movie title!) The hyphenated notation is still standard in almost all media. By the way, is there in nationality/ethnicity something analogous to how we denote gender in Wikipedia? I mean, is the issue decided by as what one identifies? This is a tricky area. -The Gnome (talk) 18:50, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@The Gnome: Not sure about that (cuz my knowledge is limited tbh). As for his nationality, I suggest omitting it in the lead sentence and explaining later (e.g. "... is an actor. Born in Germany to a mother from Northern Ireland and a German father, he relocated to Ireland at age two ...") as we've already done in Elon Musk, Tina Turner, Russell Crowe, etc. I think this is a better way cuz, you see, we can only prove his German citizenship but Germany doesn't seem to play a big role in his identity. Thedarkknightli (talk) 20:05, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We have no way of knowing what attribute, if any, MF considers to have "a big role in his identity." We know for a fact that MF has a German father. This is irrevocably one half of his parentage. Even if MF were to denounce his father's nationality or something similar, that fact does not change. So, I cannot see any reason to try and get around something trivially established as true: Father of X nationality and mother of Z nationality. The standard practice is to introduce the person by its nationality, as simply & briefly as possible, in the lead section. (I think you are looking for something new in WP BLPs, something you believe is an improvement. You might be right but this is not the way, i.e. article by article, to change established practice.) -The Gnome (talk) 10:50, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, sorry for being impetuous (again). Thanks for your time, @The Gnome! Anyway, I’ve taken this issue to the article’s talk page. Thedarkknightli (talk) 18:52, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
