Thomas "Tom" Hawkins (born July 27 1988 in Finley, New South Wales), the son of former Geelong Cats player Jack Hawkins, is an Australian rules footballer drafted by the Geelong Cats under the father-son draft rule.

Future

The 18 year old manchild is a future superstar in the making with 3 goals in his first game and following it up with 4 in his second against two of the most experianced defenders in the game.

Tom's dad Jack Hawkins played 182 games for Geelong from 1973-81. His uncles Michael and Robb Hawkins played senior football at Geelong. A grandfather on his mother Jenny's side, Fred Le Deux, played 18 games with the Cats from 1956-58.

Early life/career

Originally from New South Wales, he used to be boarding at Melbourne Grammar, until the end of 2006 when he finished Year 12. He was selected in the Associated Public School (APS) team to play the Associated Grammar School (AGS) selected football team, and was named best-on-ground for his performance. He was also co-captain of the Melbourne Grammar 1stXVIII Football Team.

Hawkins was one of 30 male recipients awarded an AIS/AFL Academy Scholarship as part of the 9th intake. The scholarship, awarded to outstanding young athletes entering the last year of their junior football development, saw Hawkins participate in several training camps before completing his summer training with a week with Geelong Football Club.

Geelong Football Club

Hawkins, in 2006, signed a contract with the Cats tying him to the club, and was named on the Cats list in the first list lodgement of the 2007 AFL season. [citation needed] Hawkins was officially selected by Geelong in the 2006 AFL Draft under the father-son rule.

During the 2006 Under 18s National Championships Hawkins won the Larke Medal for being the best player in his division. He was also named as the tournament's All-Australian full-forward. He made his brilliant debut for Geelong in round 2 of the 2007 season against Carlton, kicking 3 goals and 2 points and taking several strong marks in their 78 point victory. The following week he built on this with a dominant 4 goal performance against Melbourne at the MCG.[1]
