The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are smartphones designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. They are the eighteenth-generation iPhones, succeeding the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. The devices were unveiled alongside the higher-priced iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max at an Apple Special Event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California on September 9, 2024.[1] Pre-orders are set to begin on September 13, 2024.

History

The Radio Equipment Directive, which requires that all electronic devices in the European Union use USB-C charging, was passed into law in 2023. Apple confirmed it would comply with the regulations, and in September of that year revealed that the iPhone 15 would have a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port.[2] The iPhone 16 will also be required to use USB-C under EU law. Additionally, India passed a similar USB-C mandate which will go into effect in March 2025, also affecting the type of charging used for the iPhone 16.[3]

Design

Display

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will retain their screen sizes of 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively. Additionally, they will feature a slightly taller aspect ratio, changing from 16.5:9 (11:6) to 16.6:9 (83:45).

Colors

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will come in five new different colors, including: Pink, Black, Ultramarine, Teal and White.[4]

The iPhone 16 will include a new 48-megapixel camera, offering four times the resolution of the iPhone 14. It also features a new ultrawide camera that will allow for more light capture in low-light situations as well as automatic focus.[5]

Every model in the iPhone 16 lineup has support for WiFi 7.[6]

iPhone 16 battery

By buying iPhone 16, your phone will be in standby mode for a longer time than other Apple products. Because this series of products have been upgraded in terms of battery capacity. The iPhone 16 Pro version has a capacity of 3355 mAh compared to its 15th generation counterpart, which has increased its capacity by 2.5%. Also, the promax version of iPhone 16 has a capacity of 4676 mAh, which has been improved by 5.7% compared to its previous category. Other iPhone 16 phones have also experienced improvements in terms of battery.[7]

Enclosure

The enclosure will be made up of 85% recycled content.[5]

Specifications

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will have a vertical camera layout, similar to the iPhone 12, as opposed to the diagonal layout for iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and iPhone 15. The iPhone 16[8] will have a starting price of $799, while the iPhone 16 Plus will start at $899. The USB Type-C port is used, albeit with USB 2.0 data transfer speeds up to 480Mb/s.[9]
