Pastida (Greek: Παστίδα) is a village on the Greek island of Rhodes. It is located slightly inland from the west coast on the northern tip of Rhodes, 5 miles from Trianta and 10 miles from Rhodes Town, on the foot of mount Philerimos. In Latin, the name of the village means "castle". It is a part of the municipal unit of Petaloudes. (Pastida is a lowland town of Rhodes in the Dodecanese and is located at an altitude of 45 metres[1]. According to the 2011 census, it has 3,641 inhabitants and with the implementation of the Kallikrates program since 2011 it is the Municipal Community of Pastida of the Municipal Unit of the Municipality of Rhodes[2].)
Geography - Name
[edit](Pastida is the closest village to the city of Rhodes, built on the southern foothills of Mount Filerimos[3] and bordered by Ialissos, Kremasti and Maritsa. The patron saint of the village is Agios Nikolaos. It has other monasteries such as: Agios Georgios, Agia Markela, Agios Fanourios, of the Three Hierarchs, of the Saviour[4]. The A.S. Asteras Pastidas is the local team of the village. Other clubs are active in the village such as: A.S Sotokan Karate Rhodes, Kamari Cultural Association that organizes a Cultural Festival every year[5], Pastida Women's Association.
The village, in recent years, has been flourishing and the number of residents has exceeded 3,000. In 1961 it had 595 inhabitants, in 1981 it had 1,021, in 1991 it had 1,500 and in 2001 the actual population of the village was 1,803 people. It has a standard primary school (12 seats), cafes, restaurants, fast food, snack shops [6].
According to one opinion, Pastiida probably got its name during the Turkish occupation, from the word "ada" which in Turkish means "to" and the name of a Turkish official landowner Pasti Alis (Pasti-ada = to go to Pasti). Another opinion states that because it was a fortress for years, it came from the Latin word "Bastida" which means fortress [7].)
History
[edit](Image - Fountain in Pastida) (The foundation of Pastida is speculated to be around 1204, during the Fourth Crusade, when the Crusaders on their way to the Holy Land conquered Rhodes. The first historical reference to the village and its inhabitants is made in 1479 in a decree of the Master of Dobison, in which it is written: 'In the event of an enemy invasion, the villages of Trianta and Kremasti are to remain in their fortresses to guard the navy. The villages of Pastida and Maritsa are to go to the fortress of Rhodes...'. A reference to Pastida is also made by the French traveler Victor Guerin who writes: "twenty-five minutes further north is the small village of Pastida, consisting of about twenty houses. It is in the middle of a plain, and this plain is called Kamari..."[7].
Tile-roofed graves have been excavated in the village, where it appears that the non-free inhabitants of the adjacent Ialysia were buried.)
Administrative
[edit](It is officially mentioned, after the union with Greece, in the Government Gazette 248A - 28/09/1948 to be the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[8] According to the Kallikrates plan and its amendment Cleisthenes I, it is the community of Pastidas[9] which is part of the municipal unit of Petaloudes of the municipality of Rhodes, while according to the 2011 census, 3,641 inhabitants were recorded.[10] See *Community of Pastidas*)
Bee Museum
[edit](Pastida is home to the Museum of Beekeeping and Natural History of the Bee, founded by people from the Dodecanese Beekeeping Association. The museum presents the process of honey production, the biology of the bee and the products produced, as well as the history, tradition and evolution of beekeeping. Visitors can watch the live bees in glass hives working as they do in nature. The museum hosts organized or individual informative visits, educational tours and offers numerous exhibits on its premises[11].)
