Semi-protected edit request on 12 January 2024

I request that the infobox image of Furtado be updated to be more recent. 76.64.181.63 (talk) 02:20, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Protection

@Ponyo: Hi, you protected the version of the page with the vandalism still present which I reverted - I don't know whether it needs readding again? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 20:50, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No, the protection is a separate action and cannot be removed by reverting. Thank you for checking.-- Ponyobons mots 20:58, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, by any chance can either of you update the infobox image to a more recent one? 70.50.199.125 (talk) 03:50, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's very clear Nelly Furtado originally used the "Action Is" typeface for her logo. 98.195.26.147 (talk) 06:19, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Citizenship

@Geraldo Perez: Where exactly does it state Furtado holds dual citizenship in Portugal? Pillowdelight (talk) 23:47, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reference 3: "Segundo a Presidência da República, a cantora de nacionalidade portuguesa e canadiana Nelly Furtado será condecorada com a comenda da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique." tranlated: "According to the Presidency of the Republic, the Portuguese and Canadian singer Nelly Furtado will be awarded the Order of Prince Henry." The president of Portugal, who will know, directly states it. Also article is clear that her parents have Portuguese citizenship so she will too as Portugal practices jus sanguinis. Basically the same level of support as having Canadian citizenship via jus soli based on where born. Geraldo Perez (talk) 00:21, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't state nor mean anything about citizenship at all. All she was granted was a Commander from the Order of Prince Henry — that does not equal Portuguese citizenship. A lot of what you’re saying is merely just hearsay, you’re just assuming. You must find an actual source that directly states she has citizenship in Portugal. I had a discussion regarding this exact issue with another editor and we both agreed she didn’t hold nor could we find any citizenship in Portugal. Pillowdelight (talk) 01:05, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Clear Looking Glass: Do you remember when we discussed this? Pillowdelight (talk) 01:10, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Portuguese president directly stated it "cantora de nacionalidade portuguesa e canadiana Nelly Furtado" word for word "singer of nationality Portuguese and Canadian Nelly Furtoado". A direct statement of fact by someone who would know. That is a good reference for dual citizenship. Canadians with just Portuguese ancestry but not citizenship are called "luso-canadianas" in that reference which was not used to describe Furtado. Geraldo Perez (talk) 02:44, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nationality and citizenship are not the same thing. Not even close. Pillowdelight (talk) 04:03, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It depends on a country's laws and culture. Legally they are the same thing in both Canada and Portugal. Portuguese nationality law#Terminology "In the Portuguese context, the two terms are normally used interchangeably." Portugal decides who is a citizen/national of that country and the president of the country stated she was a Portuguese national (and thus citizen) in that statement he made about her. We have deprecated using nationality in the infobox because of people not understanding the ethnic nationality, legal nationality and citizenship distinctions WP:INFONAT but legal nationality and citizenship are clearly synonyms in Portuguese law. Simply not in sources....no guesswork. shoukd be droped. Moxy🍁 06:25, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Directly and clearly supported by sources. Has a good reference as shown above. What is the problem here? The fact the reference is in Portuguese and not English? That Portugal can't identify its nationals? That the source is dubious? Or the person making the statement of fact isn't reliable? Geraldo Perez (talk) 06:44, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What are you talking about.....no mention of citizenship! If this was the caese there would be sources all over. This is a great example of WP:SYNTH "Do not combine material from multiple sources to state or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources." Moxy🍁 06:51, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is one foreign source with a clear and direct statement of fact. Language translation from a foreign source isn't synthesis. Is there any doubt the translation is wrong? Geraldo Perez (talk) 06:57, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Need another source - again .no mention of citizenship!..This reminds me of Buffy Sainte-Marie situation

Canada considers me a “citizen” in quotes. So Canada…[she laughs] Every time I’ve had something like the Governor-General’s Award or Pierre Trudeau invited me to do that command-performance for the Queen, or when I was named an Officer in the Order of Canada, I explained every time that I don’t even have a Canadian passport. And everybody said ‘That’s OK. You’re one of us’.

Nationality indicates the place where a person or his parents are born and Citizenship is legally acquired after fulfilling the eligibilities of becoming a citizen of any country. Do we have any sources that she got citizenship by way of apply for Portuguese nationality status? Moxy🍁 07:13, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The president of Portugal directly stated in the reference that she has Portuguese nationality. Presumption is he knows the facts and is making a true statement. It was not stated how she got it, just that she has it. Geraldo Perez (talk) 07:51, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Correct he says she has Portuguese nationality (refering to ancestry) not that she is a national Think about it....this is the only source out there how is that possible. Citizenship has to be obtained .....they do simple hand them out to all diaspora children automatically Will give a few days to find a source before removed Moxy🍁 08:12, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Moxy: Like I previously told @Geraldo Perez: the sources do not directly state anything regarding any citizenship. It needs to be removed from the infobox. Pillowdelight (talk) 09:46, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
