The Aprilia RXV/SXV series are four-stroke, v-twin, off-road motorcyles produced by Aprilia. They are available in several models, including an enduro (RXV) and supermotard (SXV). The bike was introduced in 2007. The bike is banned from American Motorcyclist Association due to it's v-twin design; the AMA rules prohibit all two-cylinder motorcycles from competition. [1]

Engine

The RXV/SXV has a v-twin engine, and is one of the first off-road motorcycles to feature fuel injection. The 4.5 has a displacement of 449 cc, while the 5.5 has a displacement of 549 cc. Each engine has a single-overhead cam and four valves per cylinder. The 77 degree cylinder angle minimizes vibration. [2] Both are dry sump, with a separate oil tank for the gearbox and engine.

The 4.5 produces a claimed 60 horsepower at the crank, while the 5.5 produces a claimed 70. [3] Unfortunantly, horsepower measured at the crank is of little use to the average rider; horsepower measurements are much more accurate when taken at the rear wheel with a dynojet. [4] All have a redline of 13,000 revolutions per minute.

All of the SXV/RXV motorcycles are electric start, with no kickstart option.

Frame/Chassis

The RXV/SXV's frame is made of a combonation of tubular steel and aluminum plates. The compact engine fits into the frame in such a way that the air filter sits on top of the engine, below the gas tank, rather than the more traditional under-the-seat location. [5]
