Giratina (ギラティナ) is one of the Template:Pokenum fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Giratina is one of the legendary Pokémon that premiered in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Giratina in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]
Its name may be derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the French word guillotine. It could also be derived from girasol, another word for fire opal.
Biological characteristics
Giratina is described in the Pokémon video games as a creature that lives in a world on the reverse side of the human world. Giratina's body structure somewhat resembles a cross between a centipede and basilisk with demonic and saurian touches. It has a long, gray, segmented body, with six basilisk-like legs. Its thick legs have yellow spikes on the ends of its feet and yellow shackles around each leg. Giratina has two black wings with red horns jutting out from parts of them coming out of its neck. The wings appear ghostly, with no solid edges in the art and game pixels, making believe that the wings are not real, but are "ghosts" that enable Giratina to fly.Its neck also has three yellow blade-like crescents around it that match the color and possible material of the crown-like helmet upon its head. These look very similar to a ribcage, opening up the length of its body. Its belly is black with red bars going across it, possibly meant to resemble a spinal column. Its face is very similar to that of Dialga and Palkia, as is its tail. Also like its counterparts, Dialga and Palkia, it is based on a stone, in this case, Girasol, the fire opal. The red torchlike claws could be inspired by the fact that some girasol is bright red. Its red eyes are piercing and intimidating. These characteristics add up to an appearance of a powerful and demonic basilisk. It may be the dimensional pokemon like Rayquaza is the physical pokemon.
Giratina is the second-heaviest Pokémon after Groudon.
In the video games
Giratina is one of the legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. It can be encountered after the player receives the National Pokédex. It is located in Turnback Cave, which is located in the new area Sendoff Spring. It is level 70 when found and is in a cemetery-like ruin in the depths of Turnback Cave, a place where the border between dimensions is said to be distorted. It has immensely high HP, very high Defenses, high Attack and Special Attack, but it has a somewhat Average Speed.
