"Bye Bye Beautiful" is the second track on Finnish symphonic power metal band Nightwish's Dark Passion Play album. The song was confirmed to be the third single off of Dark Passion Play by Tuomas Holopainen in an interview[1].

A promo version of the track was leaked to the Internet on July 11th, 2007.

Story

"Bye Bye Beautiful" is written by Tuomas Holopainen about the band's prior vocalist, Tarja Turunen, who was fired from the band by open letter in 2005, and his feelings before and after whatever changed her attitude against the band and its music. This was at first rumored among fans and later revealed by Holopainen in an interview[2]. Hietala is performing the chorus, singing "Did you ever hear what I told you?", obviously referring to the times Holopainen tried to tell Turunen that she and the band was tore apart, followed up by "Did you ever read what I wrote you?", referring to the lyrics he used to write for her to sing.

Music

The vocal parts are shared between the band's two vocalists, Anette Olzon and Marco Hietala, with Hietala performing the chorus.

The chorus is:

"Did you ever hear what I told you?
Did you ever read what I wrote you?
Did you ever listen to what we played?
Did you ever let in what the world said?
Did you get this far, just to feel your hate?
Did we play to become only pawns in the game?
How blind can you be, don't you see?
You chose the long road, but we'll be waiting"
