"Shut Up and Drive"
Song

"Shut Up and Drive" is a song written by Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers for Rihanna's third album Good Girl Gone Bad (2007). The track uses a reworked version of New Order's "Blue Monday" as the main musical theme.[3] Its lyrics use automobiles as a metaphor for the persona in an offer of sex.[4] It was released as the second North American single in June 2007 (see 2007 in music).[5] It debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 88 and has so far peaked at number fifteen.[6]

Critical reception

The song has received mixed reviews from music critics. Slant Magazine found that the song did not live up to its campy title,[7] and The Village Voice described it as simultaneously "goofy and sexually daring".[4] All Music Guide, however, referred to it as "a sleek, forthcoming proposition…as undeniable and rocking as Sugababes' 2002 UK smash 'Freak Like Me'".[8]

The song's music video is directed by Anthony Mandler and opens with Rihanna driving a Ferrari F430 into a garage. Rihanna and several other girls start working in the car mechanic garage in a suggestive manner, before slamming the hoods down on cue with the first "Shut Up and Drive" part of the lyrics. The video then cuts to a scene where two cars are preparing to race. Rihanna and her friends show up, and Rihanna proceeds to flirt with the two race car drivers through the open windows of their cars at the starting line. She then directs the drivers to "Shut Up and Drive", and they take off. The next scene shows Rihanna performing with her band. Throughout the video, Rihanna is also shown in the car garage, and walking around the race yard.

The video premiered on MTV's Total Request Live on July 4, 2007. On July 9, 2007, it debuted on the TRL countdown at number ten for the first time and has been on the countdown for twenty nine days and so far has peaked at #4 as of August 20, 2007.

Rihanna's first promotional venues for Shut Up And Drive were on the British television shows This Morning, The Friday Night Project and DanceX. Rihanna also performed Shut Up And Drive in public prior to its release at venues including Stripped Music, Live Earth, AOL Music Sessions, and several concerts not shown on television. The music video was also used in 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup broadcasts on ESPN. The song has also been used in the promotional commercial for the CW's reality television series America's Next Top Model for Cycle 9, and the new show Carpoolers on ABC.

Rihanna performed the song on the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards with Fall Out Boy, and on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. [9]
