London Midland is the brand name of the train operating company who will operate the new West Midlands railway franchise in England. London Midland, whose formal name is London and Birmingham Railway Ltd., is a subsidiary of Govia. They are due to take over services from the present operators, Central Trains and Silverlink (both subsidiaries of the National Express Group), on 11 November 2007.
Routes
London Midland plan to divide their services between two sub-brands[2], London Midland Express and London Midland City. The routes they will operate are as follows:
Express
- Birmingham New Street – Liverpool / Preston
- London Euston – Milton Keynes - Northampton - Birmingham
- London - Rugby - Nuneaton - Lichfield - Stafford - Stoke - Crewe
It will be a requirement of the franchise to allow Oyster Cards to be used on its routes in the London/Watford area. Transport for London have expressed interest in taking over the St Albans Branch Line and installing Oyster Card readers on the stations along the branch[3], however this was implemented with the award of the franchise.
City
- Birmingham Snow Hill – Worcester / Leamington Spa / Stratford-upon-Avon
- Stourbridge Junction – Stourbridge Town
- Birmingham – Coventry
- Birmingham – Wolverhampton
- Birmingham – Shrewsbury
- Birmingham – Worcester – Great Malvern – Hereford
- Coventry – Nuneaton
- Walsall – Wolverhampton – Wellington
- Lichfield – Redditch
- Stafford – Rugeley – Walsall – Birmingham
- Bedford – Bletchley (Marston Vale Line)
Rolling stock
London Midland’s initial fleet will be composed of rolling stock inherited from Silverlink and Central Trains. They plan to improve the reliability and interior design the existing Class 153 and Class 170 trains, and install passenger information systems and CCTV on the majority of the fleet. They also intend to use automatic load-monitoring systems to measure how heavily their services are used, for the purpose of alleviating over-crowding.
