Redlands East Valley High School is a public high school in Redlands, California that also serves the East Highland and Mentone communities, 59 miles (95 km) east of Los Angeles. The school opened in the 1997-1998 school year as part of the Redlands Unified School District. Located in a small town near the San Bernardino Mountains of California, it is one of four high schools in the district, the others being Redlands High School, Redlands Citrus Valley High School, scheduled to open 2009, and Orangewood High School, a continuation School.

Colors & Mascot

The official school colors of REV are red and white. Red and white were chosen to directly contrast the blue and white of cross-town rivals Redlands High School (RHS). The same rationale chose the Wildcat as REV mascot, which contrasts with the RHS Terrier.

Design

Redlands East Valley High School is a 264,000-square-foot (24,500 m2) comprehensive high school located on a 57 acre sloping site. Designed to house 2,500 students but currently housing almost 3,500 students, the school includes administration facilities, media center, theater and performing arts facility, multipurpose facility, gymnasium, fine arts building and various specialized educational classrooms. Site improvements include a pool facility, track and football field, tennis courts, basketball courts, and baseball and softball fields. Designing a new high school for a city whose community shares a magnificent history of pride and tradition was an incredible challenge for the developer. The participatory design process included school-board members, administrative staff, teachers, students, parents, maintenance staff and community members.

Another key element in the design was the focus on the media center and its application of technology. As the use of technology has become more integrated into the educational delivery process, it was natural to view the media center as the hub of the campus in concept and in practical use. When entering the campus, one immediately understands the importance of the media center and its relationship to the campus. A primary circulation path that circles the media center leads visitors to all the major facilities.

The campus imagery reflects a serious academic setting constructed of timeless and durable materials. Concrete masonry, exposed structural steel, glass and metal roofs make up the majority of the building exteriors. Many practical considerations, such as security, use of buildings after hours, circulation of students and daily operational issues led to the physical layout of the building spaces. However, the entire campus is held together by the exterior use of space and clear organization.

Student Government

The Associated Student Body (ASB) in Room D-148 of REV coordinates all student activities, as well as overseeing and approving the financial transactions for the school in accordance to California state laws. This class, known as student government, is under the direction of the Student Activities Director, and its members are elected and selected for one year terms.

Publications

Newspaper

The Audêeis newspaper is published monthly by the students news production course. It has garnered awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and The Sun's High School journalism contest. Each issue of the newspaper contains twenty pages with extensive news articles, profiles, features, sports articles, comics, entertainment articles, and editorials.

Yearbook

The Odyssey yearbook is a full-color, award-winning annual, with pictures and faces of all things related to the ending school year. It is put together by the REV Yearbook Committee.

Illiad

Another book, the Illiad, is also produced; this book showcases students' art and literature.

Sports

1997-2007

REV began league play in 1998 when it was introduced into the C.B.L. but since its inception into the league, it has done well and is considered a regional powerhouse. The school won titles in tennis, water polo, swimming, golf, wrestling, track, cross country, and many other sports.

The Baseball program at REV is considered one of the best in the county. The Wildcats have been to the playoffs every year under coach Steve Hernandez from 2001 through 2007.[1]

The Football program got off to a bad start (1-48)in its first years, but now with the leadership of Kurt Bruich, the Redlands Wildcat's won their first C.B.L. Division 1 Title in 2004.

Memorable Events

2007 Football season

  • The Redlands Wildcats football team played their 2007 opener game on Friday September 7 at Riverside Community College versus the heavily favored, 2006 Ivy League Champs, Riverside John W. North High School. The game was televised for the Fox Sports Net cameras that broadcast the action throughout California, Redlands East Valley and Riverside North played an exciting game that featured two ties, three lead changes, and a last minute score by REV on top of an unsuccsessful last minute drive by Riversside. Redlands won 21 to 20.[2] As there pre-season continued the Redlands Wildcats defeated Compton Dominguez High School 44-14 on Friday September 14, 2007. The game is ranked as one of the best impressive-to-outsiders football victories in school history. Dominguez High in 2007 was the defending CIF-SS Western Division champions. The Redlands Wildcats went on to win the 2007 Citrus Belt League title and entered the in the CIF-Southern Section Inland Division playoffs, defeating Murrieta Valley High School in the 1st round, two-time defending CIF-SS champion Norco High School in the 2nd round, before losing in the semi-finals to Corona Santiago High School, The Wildcats went 13-1. The best record in REV's high school football history.[3][4]

  • The school cost US$35,000,000.00 (41 million 1995) to build (or $132.58 per square foot), and was completed in September, 1997
  • The roof of the Media Center Library was designed to look like an opened book.
  • The performing arts building was designed to look like a piano, complete with black and white tiles on the floor in the piano lab.
  • This team never won a varsity game until its third Citrus Belt League season, when they won 21-12 against Arrowhead Christian Academy
  • The Performing Arts Theater is named in honor of Harry Blackstone Jr., a famous stage magician who lived in Redlands
  • The school shares the University of Redlands Football Stadium ,{Ted Runner Stadium}, with Redlands High School and The U of R Bulldogs football teams.
