Foxy Shazam

Foxy Shazam is an American alternative rock group from Cincinnati, Ohio that formed in 2004. The band name originated from a term that was used by the students at Eric's high school, it was slang for cool shoes! [1]

As the self-proclaimed Evel Knievel of Rock N Roll, Foxy Shazam is making a death defying musical stunt with their sound. The group creates keyboard propelled songs layered with some spastic hardcore noise, all on top of soul inspired pop.[2][3]

History

The band was founded by Eric, Loren, and Sky in 2004 in Cincinnati, Ohio.[1] On June 15, 2005 they released their self-produced first full-length album entitled The Flamingo Trigger. Touring at over 200 shows in eighteen months, the word of Foxy Shazam began to spread catching the attention of many, during which they caught the eye of Jesse Korman, frontman of The Number Twelve Looks Like You, and partner of Piermont Management. Jesse showed interest in the band, and made Foxy Shazam the first client of Piermont Management. P.M. quickly introduced their client to Nick Storch of New Weathermen Records. Nick was unsure at first with such a strange group. But soon after noticed there's really something going on in that chaos. Foxy Shazam is the second artist to be signed to the label in partnership with Ferret Music. After all was said and done Foxy Shazam entered the studio along with producer Casey Bates (Chiodos, The Number Twelve Looks Like You) to start work on their second full-length album entitled Introducing which released on January 22, 2008.[3]

The live shows of Foxy Shazam are unique. The members often do wild things. Sometimes play other instruments of the other members. The singer Eric sometimes climbs the stage rigging or hangs on it. Pianist White will sometimes bang his own feet on his keyboard for dramatic effect. Eric has also been reported to eat lit cigarettes mid song. And guitarist Loren balances his guitar on his head.[4]

Foxy's performances are generally lively. Members of the band sometimes refuse to be confined to their instruments, choosing instead to play others while on stage. Nally has been known to climb or hang off random objects on stage, or grab a cigarette, have a few puffs then eat the cigarette still lit. However, he isn't the only person willing to experiment with on stage antics, with each member having their own random theatrics. White will, on occasion, play with his feet, slamming the piano to get as much sound out of it as possible. He has also been known to trade instruments with Daisy mid-song. In all, their electricity on stage fits well with the songs they've created.<ref name="madhat">

After the release of their first album in 2005, Foxy went on to tour North America. For eighteen months they performed at over 200 locations[3]. About their live shows Turner says,

We tend to be really theatrical because we are so passionate about the music. It really moves us, and we don’t need props to show it.[2]

Two Foxy Shazam experiences can be seen here and here. Their live shows are typically described as exciting and different, and have been described as good experiences by some showgoers.
