Captain Typho is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe, played by Jay Laga'aia. He comes from Naboo and is the nephew of Captain Panaka and the bodyguard of Padmé Amidala during the Separatist Crisis and the Clone Wars. He attended many of the same offworld training academies as his uncle and fought under Panaka's command in the Battle of Naboo, where he lost his left eye.

Prequel trilogy

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

He makes his first appearance in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones as the new bodyguard for Senator Padmé Amidala. Her previous protector was Captain Panaka, who is Typho's uncle.

Captain Typho survives the attack on Amidala's ship and pleads with her to get herself out of harm's way on the Coruscant landing platform. He is grateful when the Jedi Council offers extra assistance in Amidala's protection.

Typho saw off Padmé and her Jedi protector Anakin Skywalker as they left for Naboo (Typho stayed on Coruscant with handmaiden Dormé). When Anakin's mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi told Typho he was worried about Anakin trying something "foolish" with Padme, Typho responded that he should be worried about her doing something. This unbiased comment was praised by fans who felt Star Wars could sometimes have underlying sexist qualities in dialogue. It also gives Typho a level of maturity that most male characters in the movies lack.

Captain Typho appears in the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series, where Jedi Master Yoda uses a Force-assisted "persuasion" to get Typho to agree to a detour on Ilum (he initially objected on the grounds that it put Padme in danger). Although this was controversial in that it seemingly portrays Typho as "weak-minded", it would seem as though Yoda is powerful enough to use mind tricks on strong willed individuals. (Considering that Master Yoda can do many things what other Jedi masters cannot do, he might not be so "weak-minded" as a security captain at all.)

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Typho appeared again in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, although his role is reduced to a bare minimum. Typho remained in Amidala's service to defend the Senator against assassination attempts both on Naboo and Coruscant.

Following the end of the Clone Wars, a distraught Amidala decided to travel to Mustafar unaccompanied to interrogate her husband with regards to the rise of the Galactic Empire and his supposed massacre of Knights and Younglings in the Jedi Temple. Typho attempted to go with her, but Padmé insisted on traveling with only her protocol droid C-3PO to protect her. The next time Typho saw her was at her funeral. He was most likely ashamed that he could not prevent Padme Amidala's death. He then refuses to join the Galactic Empire thus ending his life.

Novelizations

He also appears in the book series The Last of the Jedi, where he serves a contact to the fledgling resistance group led by Ferus Olin. He only appears in one book, so far. He is given a first name in this book-he's called Gregar Typho.
