Ad hominem

An ad hominum argument is an a logical fallacy which represents an attack against a the character of a person, and is not a sufficent refutation of his or her particular argument. Ad hominum arguments are unfortunately common in democratic politics, where the attack serves to point out character flaws as a means of avoiding discussion of the relevance or truthfulness of what the person under attack originally said.
