The title of Earl Russell was created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1861 for Lord John Russell, the foreign secretary and former Prime Minister.

The Earl holds the subsidiary title of Viscount Amberley. Other than the 1st Earl, famous earls have included the philosopher Bertrand Russell, the 3rd Earl, and the current 5th earl, Conrad Russell, a noted historian of 17th century England.
