Bloodstone is a 1988 American action/comedy movie directed by Dwight Little and written by controversial Greek director Nico Mastorakis. Starring Rajnikanth, Brett Stimely and Anna Nicholas. The movie was filmed in south India, the story revolving around a mythical ruby called Bloodstone.

Plot

The 1988 released film Bloodstone was Rajnikanth's first and last foray into Hollywood. The film had Hollywood producers as well as Ashok Amritraj who has made quite a few films in the U.S. Sadly, this action adventure flick was not well-received in the U.S. at all.

A newly wed American couple (Brett Stimely and Anna Nicholas) go to India for their honeymoon. A ruby which belonged to a Maharaja eight centuries ago is stolen. In order to escape from the law, the thieves hide the ruby in the couple's backpack. To retrieve it, Anna is kidnapped by the goons. It is now up to Brett and his Indian friend Rajnikanth to save her. Rajnikanth is a driver whom Brett befriended earlier.

Though the story was a run-of-the-mill one and had nothing new to offer as compared to an Indiana Jones, this had more humor in it.

Box Office

Sadly, Bloodstone didn't have a grand release in the U.S. but it did open to a respectable response in India. The action in the film was really commendable and though the film is forgotten today, people who had seen it in movie halls at that time or who just happen to come across the film on DVD have spoken well of it though a lot of them tag it to be a B-grade adventure flick. No problem in that. A lot of Mithun da B-graders entertain us to the core.

Rajnikanth won rave reviews for his role of Shyam Sabu- the rickshaw driver. In fact, he went all out in the film even though he was the second lead. He is the same Rajnikanth that we all know and love and it is his style that sets him apart from the rest.

The American Actors Performance was commendable . but rajnikanth took the limelight in the movie potraying his character very well.
