Level
Appearance
- In construction, level (as an adjective) is to horizontal what plumb is to vertical.
- In construction, a level (as a noun) is a tool used to measure and obtain a leveled surface, such as flooring or countertop, so that a ball will not roll around; see spirit level and laser line level.
- In a building, a level is equivalent to a flooer or storey.
- A part of the virtual world in a computer or video game; see level (computer and video games)
- In many role-playing games, levels are numbers that represent a character's overall skill and experience. To level or level up means to gain a level. See also: experience point.
- At language education, one's competence is referred to as being at some level. See Interagency Language Roundtable scale.
- In politics, to bring/force all members of society to the same level of status and wealth. See redistribution, Diggers, Levellers.
- In music, a level is similar to but more general and basic than a chord.
- In mining, levels are the most important passageways through the mine. Horizontal in nature, they generally follow the lode and when the ore is worked out, provide transit facilities through the mine to side passages for further extraction. A shaft (vertical in nature) provides for movement between levels. A level which is extended to include an access point to the outside world is called an adit.
