Under a Velvet Cloak is a fantasy novel by Piers Anthony. It is the last of eight books in the Incarnations of Immortality series.

Plot introduction

This novel features Nox, the Incarnation of Night. (The other seven Incarnations are described collectively as the Incarnations of Day.)

In this novel, the protagonist's name is Kerena. She is taken as apprentice to a seer named Morely and after a year and a half they fell in love. When Morley mysteriously vanishes, Kerena goes to a brothel and earns her keep while finding information on her lost lover. Eventually, someone named Hursh asks her to come home to be his mistress. Although the wife is not unhappy with Kerena, she wants to love Hursh but cannot.

She goes on to learn from Morgan le Fey, on how to increase her hidden powers. Eventually, coming to know a knight named Sir Gawain, and bears him the illegitimate son who begins the Taint of his line. Karena's search to cure her son mirrors Orlene's search to cure her son, Gaw 2 from And Eternity. This search of Kerena's leads her to come into the Office of the Incarnation of Night, and become Nox, Keeper of Secrets.
