Alykes or Alikes (Greek, Modern: Αλυκές), older forms: -ai and -e is a municipality on the island of Zakynthos, Greece. It has a land area of 42.881 km² and a population of 4,796 (2001 census). The seat of the municipality is in Katastari (pop. 1,287). It is located northwest of Zakynthos, north of Laganas and Keri and southeast of Volimes. It is connected with the road linking Zakynthos and Volimes. The next largest towns in the municipality are Skoulikádon (pop. 574), Ágios Dimítrios (433), Pigadákia (394), Alikanás (341), and Káto Gerakári (341).

Geography

Its geography consists of farmlands to the central and southeastern parts, the hills to the east and the mountains to the west.

History

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt and emigration occurred at a higher rate until 1981, it became one of the few villages in mountainous areas regain is population but once again lost. Kontovazena became connected with asphalt in the 2000s. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. In the late-1990s, the municipality was created.
