- Monta Vista High School is not to be confused with Monte Vista High School in Danville.
Monta Vista High School is a four-year comprehensive public high school located in the Monta Vista neighborhood of Cupertino, California, USA. It is part of the Fremont Union High School District. The school serves most of the suburban residential and IT enriched area of western Cupertino. Monta Vista also has a strong alumni following.
Monta Vista High School opened in 1969 with freshman and sophomore classes only, and graduated its first class in 1972. Since then, its student body size has averaged about 2000 students.
Monta Vista has a student body of over two thousand [1], of which 58.1% are Asian American, 36.9% are white, and .1% are African American. Because of the extremely high housing prices in the Monta Vista area, many less affluent minorites, such as Latinos and Filipinos, are priced out of the region. This has caused Monta Vista High School to have a student body that is almost exclusively Asian American and white. Also, Monta Vista High is currently experiencing a mild "white flight." This is due to many whites' concerns over the intense academic competition against Chinese and Indian Americans at Monta Vista, and that whites are feeling like an underachieving minority group at the school. [2]
In 2005, Newsweek magazine rated Monta Vista as the 57th best high school in the United States, the fourth highest academically performing high school in all of California.[3], and the top school in the Fremont Union High School District. With a extremely high API score of 924 points out of 1000, Monta Vista is regarded as one of the top schools in California. Many students have GPA's of at least 3.8, and 3.0 (B average) is considered a low GPA in the school. Heavy emphasis is placed on math, science, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Due to Monta Vista's extremely high academic achivements, the school has become one of the most academically competitive schools in the nation. It is not uncommon to hear of Monta Vista juniors and seniors staying up overnight to cram for SAT and AP exams. The single, highest priority for most students is to be accepted into a well-regarded university such as Harvard, UC Berkeley, Stanford, or UCLA. Because of intense competition in academics, several student suicides have occurred in the past few years because of overwhelming pressure in the school.
Monta Vista High School's mascot is the Matador, with its official school colors being gold and purple. Monta Vista High School rivals nearby Lynbrook High School.
Monta Vista High School's campus consists of a large baseball field, a small football field, and tennis courts. Abraham Lincoln Elementary School sits just to its east. Most of the buildings are built in the Spanish mission architectural style.
