Erana (Messenia)

Erana (Greek: Εράνα) as an ancient city in Messenia built in the area of present day Filiatra.

The ancient city was located in the area that is now known as Agia Kyriaki. In the same area still mentioned in ancient times had a settlement with the name Arene and another called Aliatros (Αλίατρος). In that prosepct and its two names Erana and Arene mentioned the same ancient settlement.

Erana survives the name in the area of Erani.

The entire area of Filiatra presents a settlement dating back to the Prehistoric era. In Gournospilies (Γουρνοσπηλιές meaning the cave of pigs), archaeologists had discovered a stone axe from the Neolithic era. Traces of a Mycenean settlement founded in Armakadia which survives ruins of an ancient settlement and a Mycenean tomb. Armakadia is located in the present day municipality of Filiatra on the GR-9, the highway to Gargaliani with olive groves and different agricultural settlements.

Filiatra was founded between the 12th and the 13th century.

Both the ancient city and Erani receives its name to a sporting team that includes basketball, chess and football (soccer).
