Wikipedia:TomeRaider database

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Erik Zachte (talk | contribs) at 18:26, 31 December 2005 (upd links). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Several Wikipedias are available in TomeRaider format for offline browsing on a handheld (Pocket PC, Palm OS or EPOC) or a Microsoft Windows PC.

All articles are conserved in the database. However all meta information (user pages, upload info, discussions, etc) and sounds have been discarded to save memory (which comes at a premium on handhelds). Images are optional, but add greatly to the file size. For TeX formulas the TeX code is shown instead of the formula itself. (Dec 2003: TeX formulas will now be rendered to HTML on Pocket PC version).

For handhelds you will need a huge memory card. The TomeRaider file for the English Wikipedia (without images) measures roughly 537 MB (but contains > 1080 MB text).

As of summer of 2005 the following wikipedias are available for TomeRaider3:

To get the multilanguage databases for handhelds and PC go to the download area. You can also download the Spanish Wikipedia optimized for TR3 and Palm OS from PDAexpertos.

It is not difficult to generate a more up to date version yourself from a database dump file, see instructions

These are example screenshots of the Wikipedia TomeRaider database on a Pocket PC.

Target platforms

The TomeRaider files are platform specific:

  • (P)PC - For Windows PC and Pocket PC handhelds. This version of TomeRaider fully supports HTML. It renders the articles almost similar to the online Wikipedia. December 2003, TeX and unicode font support were added for this platform.
  • Palm - TomeRaider 2 for Palm does not support HTML. As a result the articles are shown with very basic formatting. Complex tables are a bit messy. The files still have to be converted into pdb format (version 2.8). The TomeRaider 2 implementation puts a restriction on the file size. Therefore the largest wikipedias had to be split into several chunks (English: 20!). Hyperlinks between these volumes are turned into external references and have to be resolved manually. See also TomeRaider 3 below.
  • EPOC - The formatting is similar to the Palm version. No size constraints here, so even the huge English Wikipedia is available here as one volume.

TomeRaider 3

Since Oct 2004 a new version of Tomeraider is available with major improvements:

  • Image support
  • Category support
  • Even better text compression
  • Advanced search facilities
  • Palm platform: better html support, still not as good as on Windows or Pocket PC (no html table markup)
  • Palm platform: file size restrictions are gone, hence no 20 chunks for the English Wikipedia, but one big file, like on other platforms

Notice that the freeware version is a crippled one disallowing the reading of many articles.
